What to Netflix: Denzel Deja Vu

Denzel Washington's latest sci-fi/action film, Deja Vu, opened on November 22nd to mixed reviews. The overall impression seems to be that Denzel's grounded and emotionally pitch-perfect performance saves the murky plot from being a total let-down. In fact, Denzel could take virtually any half-baked movie premise and make it engaging, so have a little deja vu with one of Hollywood's most talented actors and put these old favorites in your Netflix queue.

The Preacher's Wife
This is probably my favorite Denzel movie of all time, as cheesy as that sounds. He's just so darn charming, funny, and handsome. He plays an angel sent from God to help the Reverend Henry Biggs, who is struggling to keep his marriage to Julia (Whitney Houston) intact while property developer Joe Hamilton (Gregory Hines) is threatening to destroy his church and build a funky new mega-church. Because this movie is called The Preacher's Wife and has Whitney Houston in it, it is largely about her, but Denzel is the truly divine member of this cast. Also, its great music and holiday setting make this an especially fun movie to watch now.

Man On Fire
In this movie, we are treated to both Denzel-the-tough-guy and Denzel-the-softhearted-dad-type. Set in Mexico City, the movie has Denzel playing John Creasy, a haggard, alcoholic ex-assassin for the CIA who, for lack of anything else to do, agrees to serve as the bodyguard for industrialist Samuel Ramos' daughter Pita, played by Dakota Fanning. Fanning is at her precocious best here and succeeds in worming her way into Creasy's heart. When she is kidnapped, Creasy is frantic to find her and swears vengeance on anyone involved in the abduction. While it isn't the happiest of movies, it is worth watching if only to see the sweet relationship between Creasy and Pita develop.

Philadelphia

Though Tom Hanks took the Oscar for his performance in Philadelphia, many argue that Denzel deserved one as well. Denzel plays Joe Miller, a homophobic lawyer who helps fellow attorney, gay HIV-positive Andrew Beckett (Hanks), make a wrongful termination case against his conservative law firm. Over time, Joe and Andy form a friendship, and Joe races against time to try and win Andy's case before AIDS can take over Andy's body. This is one of those "important" movies about the power of love over prejudice.

Denzel Gives Us Deja Vu

You aren't experiencing deja vu. If you feel like you've seen this premiere before, it's because you have. It had its US premiere last month in NY. But this week it premiered overseas in France. Meanwhile the film sits comfortably at number three at the box office. In the film Denzel travels back in time to investigate an explosion, but the actor says director Tony Scott based the film on reality. Here's more:

He said he didn't want to make a science fiction movie, but a science fact movie," Washington told The Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen. "He did a lot of research about surveillance and what they are capable of and found out a lot of information about the whole investigation in London and those bombings and how they track all that stuff down. So the film was steeped in that reality."

[Denzel's character] travels back in time to save the woman and ends up falling in love with her.

"I fall in love with a dead woman," Washington said. "That's passion. That's love. That's commitment."

Christina and Adam do Lunch

Christina Ricci and Adam Goldberg are clearly back on these days. We saw them dressed in their best last week for the premiere of Adam's new film alongside Denzel Washington in Deja Vu, and now they're showing off their casual side for a little lunch in LA. These two seem like a good match.

Denzel's Deja Vu

Denzel, Jada, and Christina Ricci all experienced Deja Vu last night at the NYC premiere. In the sci-fi thriller, Denzel plays an ATF agent who is guided by deju vu to discover a crime, which leads him to travel back in time to try and prevent it. The film also stars Val Kilmer and Elle Fanning (Dakota's little sister). Denzel is looking gorgeous as always. And Jada hardly looks like she's suffering from jetlag, you never would know by the looks of her that she was in Italy only the day before. The film opens tomorrow, November 22nd.

Beyonce's Deja Vu

Expect to see a lot more of Beyonce this fall. Along with her new album in September, she has landed a a deal with the Style Network. Here's more:

The programming and marketing partnership between Style Network, Beyoncé and her mother and partner, Tina Knowles, will feature programming throughout the third and fourth quarter of 2006 about Beyoncé's clothing line, House of Deréon. This will include Uncut: House Of Deréon Featuring Beyoncé & Tina Knowles, a one-hour behind the scenes look at the singer as she prepares to release her new CD and launch her clothing line; House Of Deréon Runway Special, a 30-minute special with fashion show footage; and Everyday Runway with Beyoncé and Tina Knowles.

It's Deja Vu for Damon at the Airport

Something about Matt Damon's outfit at LAX today looks oddly familiar. Perhaps it's because it's the exact same outfit he wore four days ago when arriving in LA? His baby bottle accessory is a nice new touch, though. Even big movie stars can't get past the TSA without taking off their shoes. It looks like Isabella and Violet Affleck have been sharing tips in the shoe department, because Isabella is rocking Violet's favorite Crocs. Even if he's wearing last week's clothes (that's how the manliest men roll, after all), it's always a treat to see the adorable Damons.

TV Tonight: Launch My Line on Bravo

It's safe to say that Project Runway suffered when it moved to Lifetime; whether it was the LA setting or less than quality casting, the network jump added up to lower ratings.

If you thought the show was lacking the touch of Bravo, then you might want to tune into the network tonight for Launch My Line. As their new fashion reality show, Launch My Line is still a designer competition of sorts, but with a different spin: Instead of competing as designers, the contestants are those who are already established in another field, but want to put out a fashion collection. The show pairs them with fashion experts and they have to work together toward the $50,000 prize (check out Fab's preview of the contestants).

If this all sounds like deja vu, don't worry; Launch My Line was originally supposed to premiere in September, but Bravo moved it to tonight, so it could debut after the Top Chef season finale (which I'll also be tuning into. Go Kevin!).

Pet of the Week

Meet Deja. She's exhibiting what I like to call the universal "'Sup, beyotches!" face. DeJaVuE tells us that her mom wouldn't let her have ferrets when she was a kid, so she made sure that when she grew up and had her own place, she'd get one. (One of the sweet pleasures of being an adult!) Not only has Deja wiggled her furry little self into DeJaVuE's heart, "Since we've had Deja," she tells us, "she's wiggled herself into anywhere she thinks she can fit, done many happy dances, figured out how to open cupboards, lost her best friend (Dex) and probably attacked our feet over a million times! " Anyway, we could not be happier that the category of "pet" has expanded to "ferret." We're pro-diversity here at GS! Whoo hoo! Go Deja! (Check out her ridiculously cute pics below...)

Love it or Hate it? Victoria Beckham's Chauffeur Style

For Victoria Beckham it was a case of another day, another airport, another outf... Hang on, haven't we seen this ensemble before? She usually uses the airport arrivals lounge as her catwalk, but this morning as she arrived at Heathrow airport there was a strange sense of deja-vu to Victoria's outfit. She wore exactly the same ensemble a few weeks ago in New York, including her chauffeur hat which Pete Doherty is a fan of! Today she added an enormous white Hermes bag to the equation which is part of her collection reported to be worth £1.5 million. What do you think of her airport style?
