Mary-Kate Reads the Fine Print and Paves Her Own Way

Mary-Kate Olsen has come a long way, looking confident and sultry on the July cover of Elle. In the article, after admitting that she enjoys reading the fine print — she's a pro by now — she talks a little about what it was like growing up a star, her infamous style, and that twin of hers. Plus, we get to hear some style icons gush about her for a change. It's no secret that I've always been a fan of MK, but there's still something so great about seeing her really come into her own. Here are highlights:

On Ashley: “We don’t agree all the time. The way we go about business or designing or making a decision is that we come at it from two completely different angles that at the end of the day, even when we don’t think we’re agreeing with each other, we are agreeing. We’re just getting there in different ways. Unless you’re a twin, you honestly can’t know how close twins can be. There’s such a strength, but that also makes it…” Her voice trails off. “When there’s that much love there’s…Well, there’s the opposite of everything, but it stems from love, and it stems from passion. We’re driven people. I do know I can’t work in an office. Ashley, on the other hand, loves going to an office.”
On being sexy: “I feel like I can be sexy when I want to be,” she says. “I think all women are sexy. Some may feel it more than others. I personally think the women who are the most sexy are the women who are truly themselves, whatever that may be.”
On her fashion: “I don’t know—you’re either on the worst-dressed list or you’ve started a fashion trend. I think there’s a real disconnect between the media’s perception of fashion and the fashion world’s idea of fashion. I don’t know why I wear some of the things I wear. I like wearing crazy things sometimes. I like being playful. Sometimes I feel like I’m playing dress-up and becoming a character. It’s sort of like an art. It can change your mood or the way that people are attracted to you.”

Rihanna Tells Elle What We've Been Wanting to Hear

In between touring with Kanye and spending QT with her puppy Oliver, Rihanna made time to chat with Elle magazine for its June issue. On top of looking typically fabulous in her photoshoot, Rihanna opened up about her family, her career, and — finally! — Chris Brown. Here's more:

On Chris Brown: “We’ve always been friends, but we’re very close now.”
On the rumors about Jay-Z: "Well, it’s crazy that you ask me that. People know that it’s not true. I think it’s kinda a cliché question, and people know it’s not true, so I don’t even know why it’s still addressed to this day. I get asked about it all the time and I’m like, You’re asking, but you know the answer. I don’t even like to address it anymore.”
On her hair: "I kept telling my managers, I’m cutting my hair. I’m cutting my hair. And they’re like, ‘How short? Not too short. Cut it how short?’ And I’m like, ‘Up to here.’ [Rihanna raises her hand up to her ear] They never believed me. So when it was time to do the album cover [for Good Girl], the night before I cut it, I dyed it black. We went straight to the photo shoot, and no one at the record label knew what I looked like. When we sent the pictures over, they saw the hair and they all loved it. They loved it.”

Interview, Vanity Fair, Elle UK and now our Elle in the states have all had Madonna grace their covers this month. We have a feeling this isn't even the end of the list yet. Promoting Hard Candy is the task at hand and in each interview we learn a little something new about the record-setting Pop Icon. This time she reveals news about Lourdes, Guy, and their family dynamic. Here are highlights:

On her kids: "Lola rules the roost. She is extremely maternal toward David. He is the apple of everyone's eye right now. Lola is in major competition with Rocco, but he's starting to fight back. But when nobody's looking, the two of them still creep into bed and cuddle. It's a closet kind of love."
On shopping in a disguise: "Lola likes us to do that. The incognito never really lasts very long, because everyone knows I wear baseball caps. So I guess I don't really have an incognito."
On who disciplines her children: "Oh, definitely me. Guy's a softie when it comes to our kids."
On Guy's favorite hobby: "Jujitsu. I don't get it—grown men throwing each other around. But he loves it."

Michelle All Over Elle

Yesterday Michelle Williams looked colorful in Vogue and she continues to look precious, this time in lots of stripes in a cute photoshoot in Elle. Even when she's not talking about her heartbreak, it's still pretty sad to read all of her pre-Heath interviews. This time around she gets profound about water, talks about bobby pins and best of all — says that she can still find happiness in the darkest times. Here are highlights:

"I’m obsessed with water. The scene in Brokeback Mountain when I open the door and see Heath and Jake kiss? Everyone was outside and I was in this hallway by myself, and I just kept thinking, I want to be like water. I want to slip through fingers, but hold up a ship.”
“There's nothing sexier than bobby pins. That moment in Lolita, when Humbert Humbert is driving into the cow pasture and fingering the bobby pin? Goose bumps!”
“I'm always aware of the whole. I have that feeling inside, like when something really tickles or delights me—it's not singular. I recognize all the awful things in the world, and in spite of them, I can still laugh.”

Of course Michelle had no idea how meaningful her words would be just a few months after speaking them, but we hope that she can still stay true to herself after Heath's death. Natalie Talks About Her Projects and Project Runway

Marie Claire is not the only cover Natalie Portman scored for April — her pretty face also graces the issue of Elle. She went casual this time around, covering up those blonde locks with a cute hat. Speaking of which, which hair color do you prefer on Miss Natalie? As usual, Nat has plenty of serious stuff to talk about, but she also reveals that she still finds time for a little Project Runway. Here are highlights:

On trying to hide her ambitious nature: "It's definitely complicated. I bury it a lot, which is a very common woman thing to do. They say women often preface their statements with “This might sound stupid, but…” It sort of tempers what you are going to say. It takes the edge off so you can still be seen as ladylike. I think I have a lot of that in me. I'm very nonconfrontational; I'm definitely a pleaser."
On Project Runway: "I wish they'd thrown off Rami, because he was so mean to Sweet P! But the one I really like is the guy with glasses and the total Misshapes haircut."

Jessica Alba Can Put Asses in the Seats

Jessica Alba, who we're more used to seeing daily in her workout gear and growing baby bump, looks glam and fun in February's Elle Magazine. Just about the only unexpected skin she's showing off, however, is the tattoo on the back of her neck. Unfortunately, the interview took place before she was openly pregnant so we'll have to wait to hear her gush about that, instead she talks about — what else — her sexuality and Zac Efron. Here are highlights:

On using her sex appeal in her career: “I think there are ambitious girls who will do anything to be famous, and they think men in this business are used to women doing that. . . . Contrary to how people may feel, I've never used my sexuality. That's not part of it for me. When I'm in a meeting, I want to tell you why I'm an asset, how I'm a commodity, how I can put asses in the seats, not, 'There's a chance you're going to be able to f*** me.' That's never been my deal.”
On turning 27: “I'm anticipating it . . . I'm feeling old, yes . . . 27 was when Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and Jim Morrison all died.”
On meeting Zac Efron: “He looks like a child with a lot of makeup. I was like, 'My God, you're just a little kid.'”

While the first part is pretty standard fare coming from Jessica these days, I will admit that Efron quote is kind of hilarious. It'll be interesting to see how her image and maybe even acting roles change once she's a mom. I guess that's one pretty surefire way for her to get people to look at her as more than a sexual object.

As expected, the inside spread of Victoria Beckham's Elle is totally fabulous. We saw her shooting around Paris, but the end result is still pretty exciting. She's just so fierce (and I do not throw that word around). Yesterday we got some highlights of endearing and cheeky Posh from the article, but neglected the most important part — when she mentions David's, ahem, size. She talked about how of course she sleeps naked when she gets to climb in bed with him and then from there . . . blush.

Posh Proves That She Can Wear the Pants

Victoria Beckham looks young, playful, and sexy on the cover of the January issue of Elle, although we haven't had a chance to see how the insane photo shoot turned out yet. Last night we were treated to our first reunited Spice Girls performance at the VS Fashion Show, but we haven't forgotten about Posh's multi-faceted life and career both before and after she became a pop star. In the article she talks about life, love, and the ambition that made her famous. Here are highlights:

On doing what she loves: "I could bore you to death with zips and rivets and dyes and all sorts of things. I go to denim factories and come out completely blue! I work seven days a week. And I so love what I'm doing. I could go shopping all day, which is what a lot of people think that I do. That's their perception—that I'm a miserable bitch and go shopping all day and boss David about."

Keira Gives an Elle of an Interview

Keira Knightley is this month’s Elle cover girl, the star of the upcoming film Atonement, and she had lots to share. Between dressing up in period costumes on set for The Duchess and gorgeous Chanel gowns on the red carpet, the British beauty had a chance to speak with the magazine about her feelings on cell phones, the commercial success of her movies, and winning her libel suit last May. Here’s more:

On cell phones: "I hate them... It rings and then I realize that I don't want to talk to anyone. So I always press ignore... [After throwing her BlackBerry into the sea] I went, 'Oh, my God I want to be eco-friendly but I've chucked a BlackBerry into the sea... so I went diving into the water, which I hadn't actually been in, because there were meant to be barracudas or something, and I sort of fished around and couldn't find it anywhere."
On the lackluster performance of Domino: "That is a film that belongs in an art gallery... I remember when Domino came out and it didn't do well. I was on the set of Pirates and people were coming up to me like it was a funeral. And I guess I just don't see it like that. Obviously I know the business side of it, but I am fundamentally not in it for that reason. I'm very, very selfishly in it because it interests me and that will lead me to do films that don't do well at the box office.
On winning her libel suit in May: It was, "horrendous and completely devastating... because on another level it could potentially have ruined my career. Because if I had been anorexic, there is no way I would have been able to do a lot of the action movies that I do. People wouldn't have hired me. So when things are written that are trying to ruin my career, as that one was, I obviously have to take that very seriously."

It sounds like Keira is not going to let anyone get in the way of her cinematic success. Maybe it's that dedication that keeps the roles coming for Keira.

Women of Hollywood Celebrate Each Other, Too

Elle's gorgeous women of Hollywood celebrated themselves last night, but the night was about more than just showing off their red carpet looks. As each of the ladies took their turn at the podium, they expressed their gratitude for the award, their thoughts on Hollywood, and their sense of admiration for their fellow winners. Here are highlights:

Lauren Bacall: "It's great that the focus is on women, who are functioning, who are all working, who are productive. I've always been in favor of that, and I've always known that women are capable of going as high as they want to go."
Amy Adams: "I'm so in awe. I'll be the person sneaking in back to try to get a photo."
Diane Lane: "There's a lot more opportunity for young women, and that's great, and I like to think that I was there to help pave a few stones. It's wonderful to have all the different stages of a woman's life acknowledged and appreciated."
Scarlett Johansson: "There's this idea (Hollywood) is this deep, dark place. In reality, I think that it's a reflection of society in general."

It's always wonderful when strong women are recognized for their talents, but it's even more fabulous that they love sharing the honors.

Scarlett Talks About Woody's Sensitive Side and Mizrahi's Unwelcome Groping (Not Simultaneously)

Scarlett fits the part perfectly, looking gorgeous and dangerously seductive on the cover of Elle's November Hollywood Issue. With her album on the way, a role in the all star collaboration He's Just Not That Into You as well as another Woody Allen movie in the works, Scarlett is all over Hollywood these days. Even with all her different projects, it seems that everyone just wants to talk to Scarlett about Mr. Allen and their unconventional Muse/Writer relationship. Here are highlights from the interview:

On being Woody Allen’s muse: “We’ve joked about that word. Woody says, ‘You appear and my writer’s block is cured.’”
On Woody Allen: “Woody’s mannerisms and his wit are classically him. But when you know someone, your conversation has an intimacy that you couldn’t have predicted from seeing him on the screen. Woody surprises me all the time. On film, you see his neurotic side but not his sensitivity.”
On being fondled by Isaac Mizrahi at the 2006 Golden Globes: “I was so mortified. Holy moly, that was bizarre!”

While that incident would have many women a lot more annoyed, it sounds like Scarlett's still got a good sense of humor about the totally unwelcome groping. Then again, it sounds like Scarlett's pretty used to fairly bizarre men and their behavior.

Reese Is A Barrel Of Fun

Reese was back in LA after promoting Rendition with Jake at the Toronto Film Festival. Even though they never went public as a couple, apparently they've broken up... again. Whether these rumors are true or false, Reese certainly looks happy shopping. We love seeing Reese smiling so big and maybe it helped that she opened up to Elle about her split wth Ryan. She also spoke about being fun and controlling. Here's more:

On being fun: “I’m fun. I can be really fun. I can tell we’d have a lot of fun if the tape was off.””

On maintaining control of the relationships: “[My dad and uncle] taught me that in every relationship, the person least interested in maintaining it is going to dominate it, because they’ll never compromise. So you have to always maintain that position of least interest, and you’ll always control the relationship.”

On claims that she is always in control: “I wouldn’t be able to do what I do if I were [always in control]. I wouldn’t be able to have the empathy or the capacity to understand different lives.”

Reese always looked like fun to us, even before she confirmed it in this article, but we love her in pretty much any form.

Lindsay's in Hiding But Still on Newsstands

Lindsay's been in hiding and hopefully getting some much needed help since her second arrest for a DUI and cocaine possession. In an interview with the September issue of Elle that took place just before her visit to rehab back in May, LL opens up about never saying never, "You're setting yourself up for a disaster," her relationship with Calum, "He's me in male form. We're very similar. Stubborn, rebellious, very smart, coy, a little bit narcissistic." and relating to Ann-Margret and Marilyn Monroe… "Marilyn exudes sex appeal. She was such an innocent sort." It turns out Louis Vuitton was very interested in making LL their next girl, but completely ditched that idea after she screwed the fashion house by stealing clothes from the Elle photo shoot. Page Six reports:

...but after a disastrous Elle magazine shoot two months ago, the luxury line will no longer even lend her clothes. "Louis Vuitton had sent over some samples for her to wear in the shoot," said a snitch. "Lindsay, kept shoving the clothes into her bag, and a stylist's assistant kept getting them out of the bag, only to have Lindsay keep trying to take them. She ended up walking off with a very expensive shirt and some other items - which screwed Louis Vuitton because they were set to go to Vogue, W and Harper's Bazaar for other shoots. They were furious and kept trying to get their clothes back, but . . . Lindsay walked out with them and never returned calls." The issue hits stands today, in which she's asked about the photo shoot and replies, "I wanted everything. There was this Cartier watch, and I was like, 'What do I have to do to get this watch?' "

On being just five feet tall: “Because I’m small, a lot of what I call ‘theoretical clothing’—high-concept, architectural stuff—doesn’t work on me.”

Mandy Moore Is Using Reverse Psychology on Us

Mandy Moore is looking gorgeous in ELLE Magazine's Green Issue, which hits newsstands nationwide on April 17th. In the interview Mandy talks about her music career, calling herself the "young, un-talented one." I'm all for celebs being humble, but I think she's being a bit too hard on herself. You know you all loved her song, Candy. Anyway, it almost feels like she's using reverse psychology since she is out there to promote her new album. Here's more:

She's blunt when looking back on her image as a '90s-era teen pop star. "I'm sure I was viewed as the young, untalented one," she says. "Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera had some great pop music. And then there was Jessica Simpson. And then there was me. And that's fine."

Moore has even called her previous albums "trite, blah pop music" – but she chalks it up to the foolishness of youth. "I'm sure other people look back at things they did when they were 15 and go, 'Oh God.' That's how I feel about it. It's embarrassing."

Rachel Missed Oscars But Still Enjoys the Dresses

Ever since we caught wind that Elle selected Rachel to model the dresses of last month's Paris couture shows in the April issue, I couldn't wait to see the outcome. What can I say, I'm a sucker for all things McAdams. As you can tell, the photoshoot went swimmingly (call me crazy, but I'm totally still enjoying the pink streak). Even though Rachel disappointed the masses (weeellll, at least a few of us) by not showing up with Ryan at the Oscars, it's very cool to see her here rocking both Beyonce and Kirsten's Oscars red carpet dresses. She looks quite fetch (still trying to make fetch happen).

Rachel About to Experience Couturgasm

Rachel McAdams has something big to smile about--her boyfriend Ryan Gosling got nominated for an Oscar this morning (I totally can't wait to see her on the red carpet). Plus, she's been chosen by Elle Magazine as the starlet of choice to model the couture debuted at the Paris shows this week. She's shown here at the Chanel show, rocking her faded pink highlights with her designer duds. Here's more:

Mean Girls star Rachel McAdams will be accompanied by Elle style director Isabel Dupré, as well as photographed by Gilles Bensimon immediately following the shows for an upcoming layout as part of the magazine’s tradition of featuring of an actress/model decked out in couture.

Noted Photographer Gilles Bensimon?!? He exists outside of ANTM?!? Sorry, sorry. Can't wait to see the pics of Rachel in couture, though I somehow doubt she'll be allowed to keep her pink highlights (which have totally grown on me, BTW).

Gwen Says Touring Pregnant Not So Easy

Gwen is everywhere these days. She has a new album, a new baby, and a new outlook on life. In the February issue of Elle magazine Gwen says before Kingston she thought that she was a super woman and that she would be able to breeze through her tour despite the fact that she was pregnant. She found out quickly, however, that wasn't going to be the case. Here's highlights:

On touring while pregnant:
"I thought I was going to be one of those Mother Nature girls....I figured, I'll just squeeze it out, 'cause I'm really strong and I work out and stuff.....I would be seriously crying before I went onstage. I didn't know how I was going to get through the tour, putting on nine costume changes on a stage in front of 12,000 people every night. And I didn't want people to know (I was pregnant). I didn't want to become the Gwen Freak Circus Show – 'Watch it grow onstage.'"

On Kingston:
"Kingston is so chill....He goes with me everywhere, 'cause I'm still nursing. He's been to every studio in L.A., New York, London. He lives up to his name – total Rasta boy....He gives me real balance. You can go 100 miles an hour, but you still have to stop to hang out with him.

On life with Gavin:
"Of course me and Gavin have problems, sometimes. Everyone does. We've been together for over 10 years...This is, like, the real deal."

Well, it's nice to know she's human. I could not even imagine being pregnant and dancing around on stage for thousands of adoring fans. Sounds like she won't be trying that one the next time around. For more pics from the Elle spread just

Jennifer Garner on Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer graces the January cover of Elle Magazine and looks amazing as usual. Still, she seems to think she doesn't have any fashion sense and says that the whole thing really frightens her. She tries not to worry about it too much and even uses Rachel Zoe for red carpet events. Who knew that Zoe would have a healthy client on her list? As for how she feels about Bennifer or shall we say the original Jennifer in Ben's life, well it looks like she is being safe on that topic. Here's more:

"I'm not going to go there," Garner says demurely. "That's his life and his past. He has always been so respectful of her, and in turn I'm going to be respectful of him." And of the rumor that she turned down the part of Pamela Ewing in the big-screen remake of Dallas because Lopez was attached to play Sue Ellen? "What? That's crazy. No, no, no. No one offered me any role. That's totally silly."

Indeed, while the first Bennifer seemed, well, like a four-minute music video, Bennifer Part Deux is apparently more of a 1950s domestic comedy. Garner gardens, waxes rhapsodic about the recipes in The Foster's Market Cookbook ("chicken, spaghetti squash, roasted tomatoes"), enjoys cleaning closets—"my former roommate will tell you that I was the person to scrub the bathroom"—and says a good date night with Affleck is if she's at the stove and there's Scrabble involved. As for her days, "most of the time by far I'm at home with my daughter," she says. "My husband is superinvolved and very present, so I don't have that feeling of wandering around the house bumping into things. I have just enough stuff that gets me out where I feel like, Oh look, I exist in the world."
