What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below, you can also catch Jean-Claude Van Damme in JCVD on DVD.

Nothing But the Truth
I didn't get to see this in the theaters, so I'm curious to check out this political thriller starring Kate Beckinsale, Matt Dillon, Angela Bassett, Vera Farmiga, David Schwimmer, and Alan Alda.

The movie's plot is described as "ripped from the headlines" and centers on a journalist (Beckinsale) who outs an acquaintance of hers as a CIA agent. Things get interesting when the government's prosecutor (Dillon) sends the journalist to jail for contempt. The movie was written and directed by Rod Lurie, the guy behind one of my favorite political movies, The Contender.

Special features include commentary from the director, deleted scenes, and a making-of featurette.

Bride Wars
Hey, speaking of wedding tips we can learn from movies: Don't . . . destroy a life long friendship over a conflict in wedding scheduling! Which is to say, Bride Wars is out on DVD.

The movie stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as best friends who spend their lives dreaming of weddings together, and part of that dream is getting married at the Plaza Hotel. After both women get engaged, though, things get nasty when the Plaza books both their weddings on the same day. Instead of graciously working it out as two intelligent, grown women might do, the brides-to-be turn against each other, with each trying to sabotage the other's wedding. Needless to say, their friendship suffers.

Special features include three deleted scenes, including an alternate opening, and a featurette titled - wait for it - "The Perfect White Dress."

What Doesn't Kill You
Here's another movie I am excited to bring home to watch. Netflix has a good description of the plot: "Partners in crime Paulie (Ethan Hawke) and Brian (Mark Ruffalo) find themselves at odds after years of pulling dangerous jobs, surviving turf wars and evading a determined detective (Donnie Wahlberg) in this gritty crime drama set in South Boston. The childhood buddies have gone through the wringer together, but when Brian's relationship with his wife (Amanda Peet) begins to fall apart, their loyal friendship is tested."

The New York Times called it a "a no-nonsense, few-frills crime drama about two losers hustling their way into an early grave" that "says a little something about what it means to look at the American dream from the bottom up." Sounds awesome.

Special features include commentary with writer/director Brian Goodman and writer Donnie Wahlberg; deleted and alternate scenes; and "Makes You Stronger: The Making Of What Doesn't Kill You."

The Uninvited
Elizabeth Banks had a good year in '08 and has been popping up in movies left and right well into '09. The Uninvited was one of them, and it looks pretty darn scary.

Netflix's description of this remake of a Korean film is super-creepy: "Committed to a mental hospital after her mother's tragic death, teenager Anna (Emily Browning) discovers upon her release that her father (David Strathairn) plans to marry his deceased wife's former nurse, Rachael (Elizabeth Banks), a woman who may not have the best intentions. Foreboding warnings from her mother's ghost only cement Anna's suspicions." Yikes! I'm such a wimp about scary movies that I will definitely be recruiting people to watch this with me.

Special features include a behind-the-scenes featurette called "Unlocking the Uninvited," deleted scenes, and an alternate ending.

Orlando and Mark Share Their Sympathies

Orlando Bloom was back on the set of Sympathy For Delicious in LA yesterday and this time he had a fake tattoo and some nail polish to go with his longer locks. Mark Ruffalo, who is the director as well as a star of the film, has spared himself from too much time in the hair and makeup trailer yet. The story is about a paralyzed DJ who develops an ability to heal people, and hopefully this project will help Mark move on beyond the tragic death of his brother.

Orlando Debuts a New Shaggy 'Do

Orlando Bloom showed off a new look on the LA set of Sympathy for Delicious yesterday. He seemed a bit wary to show everyone his wig - and rightfully so since it's not quite his hottest look. Also on set was the film's director, Mark Ruffalo, who is now focusing on his work since his brother's tragic death last month. Orlando wound up in this movie after James Franco had to drop out, but it's hard to imagine that hot James would look good with that hair either.

Follow Sunrise Ruffalo's Lead and Organize Toys by Type

In the February issue of Domino, Sunrise Ruffalo, wife of actor Mark Ruffalo, shows off the bright and eclectic home the couple shares with their three young children, son Keen, and daughters Bella Noche and Odette. CasaSugar put together a guide to copying their style that left me drooling and inspired to organize my children's space. Cleanup time isn't fun for anyone, so I was thrilled by the magazine's suggestion to organize toys in baskets and on shelves by type for easy pickup, like Sunrise has done in the room Bella Noche and Keen share. (How sweet are the Flares and Fountains fabric "K" and "B" letters ($14) above their beds?)

The Ruffalos used a Blu dot shelf to store toy bins on, but any shelving helps keep boxes in order. Here's a selection of some of my favorite less expensive organizers.

Kate Winslet has earned two more acting nominations for her work in Revolutionary Road and The Reader, this time in the Screen Actors Guild awards. Danny Boyle's movie Slumdog Millionaire, starring Skins actor Dev Patel is up for Best Ensemble. - BBC
Every previous Doctor Who will appear in this year's Christmas special alongside current Doctor David Tennant, including Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton and Peter Davison. Some will be featured from archive footage. - Daily Mail
The BBC has been fined £95,000 for contest deceptions where they broadcasted 13 quizzes which listeners could not win. The contests happened on Tony Blackburn and Dermot O'Leary's radio shows. - BBC
A coroner has come to the conclusion that Mark Ruffalo's brother Scott did not kill himself, and that an autopsy has confirmed that someone else shot him. - Daily Mail

Jeremy Piven left his Broadway show Speed the Plow, which he once called "the role of a lifetime", because he said he was sick with a high mercury count. David Mamet joked he's leaving to "pursue a career as a thermometer." - Variety
Police authorities investigating Scott Ruffalo's death ruled it a homicide yesterday, despite a witness who claimed he died while playing Russian roulette with himself. - AP

Sugar Bits - Usher Welcomes His Second Son

Usher and his wife Tameka gave birth to baby boy yesterday, making it the couple's second son together after Usher Raymond V, who recently had his first birthday. His name hasn't been released yet. - People

Ricky Martin debuted the first photo of his twin boys this week and talked about their personalities and how he is raising them without a nanny. - People
The suspect in the case of Mark Ruffalo's brother's death has been cleared after stating that Scott shot himself in the head while playing Russian roulette. Mark's family released a statement saying they appreciate the support and have set up a memorial fund in Scott's name. - E! Online

Lil' Wayne has been nominated for eight Grammy awards, and Coldplay have earned seven nominations. Kanye West, Ne-Yo and Jay-Z have also all been nominated in six categories. Adele, M.I.A. and Leona Lewis join Coldplay in the group of nominees for record of the year. - BBC
