December is always a very big month for movies; with just a few weeks left until awards season starts up, this time is seen as the last chance for filmmakers to show off their biggest works of the year. In the coming weeks there will be no shortage of highly anticipated films and top-notch performances. Let's take a look at my top 12 picks.

For the past five years, Wes Anderson's wide fan base has been waiting for his first fully animated film. Would his adaption of Roald Dahl's children's book, Fantastic Mr. Fox appease the same crowd that holds Bottle Rocket and The Royal Tenenbaums near and dear to their hearts? The answer is an emphatic yes, and the best news is that you don't even have to enjoy Anderson's other work to fall in love with this film.

Sometimes going home for the holidays doesn't make you feel as cuddly and warm as a Norman Rockwell painting. But buck up, it's not so bad: featuring some of the most dysfunctional families that have ever graced the screen, my slideshow will make you think your clan is the picture-perfect image of family.

Last April, while New Moon was in production, I gave you five reasons why I thought the movie could be good. I think the sequel is better than Twilight, which many of you agree with, but let's get back to my five April theories — does New Moon fulfill them all?

I have a love/hate relationship with Ben Stiller movies. Over the years, I've grown tired of seeing him in the same everyman role again and again (with a few exceptions, like There's Something About Mary), but every now and then he throws a curve ball that pulls me back in. Greenberg already looks like one of the latter films.

Rabid fans everywhere have been waiting for the release of James Cameron's Avatar literally for years, and now there are just a few weeks to go. Back at Comic-Con, I got a long look at the movie, and I have to admit it that I wanted more after 30 minutes of footage. On the other hand, many of my friends and co-workers seem disinterested in the project entirely, especially with so many other anticipated movies hitting the theaters in December (more on that later this week).

Am I asleep? Because this sounds like a match made in heaven — Judd Apatow (along with Universal Pictures) has just picked up not one, not two, but three comedies starring Aziz Ansari. The yet-to-be-written ideas were pitched by the Parks and Recreation star as well as Jason Woliner, who is on board to direct.

December is just a few days away, which means the world of pop culture will officially take a turn for the merry. November dabbles in holiday stuff, but next month is where it really all begins. Growing up, I always considered Thanksgiving to be the kickoff point for watching holiday movies, but these days the fun seems to start even earlier (e.g., A Christmas Carol has been playing for weeks).
