TV Tonight: The Mentalist

In a Fall TV season filled with unremarkable shows (and/or shows critics just got sent within the past couple of days), The Mentalist is . . . pretty good. It's not spectacular, and it doesn't break very far out of the mold of other CBS crime series, but it's a decent show that's made watchable by its leading man.

The "mentalist" of the title is Patrick Jane, played by Simon Baker, who's best known for his role in The Devil Wears Prada (and who is not Scott Speedman). Jane's a former faux TV psychic who now helps the California Bureau of Investigations solve crimes - when he's not being belligerent and unethical, that is. Jane may be a pain in everyone's rear, but he can also be serious about his job, particularly when working on cases that tie into a personal tragedy. Sound familiar? OK, it is: The Mentalist is basically what would happen if you crossed USA's Psych, NBC's Life, and Fox's House.

I'm not sure if The Mentalist will develop into anything more than that; it partly depends on whether the crime cases stay intriguing, and also partly on whether any of the supporting characters (including one played by Robin Tunney) get interesting. But for now, it's a solid show, and Baker's pretty charismatic and easy on the eyes. I wouldn't rearrange my TiVo for it, but if you have a hole on Tuesdays at 9 and want to check out something new, The Mentalist could be worth a shot. To watch a preview, read more.

Pilot Watch: The Mentalist

The networks have announced their Fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching? This Summer, as the networks release their pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. A lot can change before a show makes it to air - especially this year, when the writers' strike severely gummed up the production of pilots - so consider these just some quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's installment: The Mentalist, a new CBS drama that will be sandwiched between NCIS and Without a Trace on Tuesdays.

What's it about? The Mentalist focuses on, well, a mentalist: Thomas Jane, a former faux-psychic who with something of a dark past who now uses his observational skills to solve crimes for the California Bureau of Investigation.

Who's in it? Simon Baker, Robin Tunney, Amanda Righetti, Owain Yeoman

The good: Baker is an appealing leading man, and not just because he's easy on the eyes (though that helps). His character is a jerk, but he's a jerk in the same way Dr. House is a jerk: Ultimately, he wants to do the right thing, and so it's easy to root for him even at his most abrasive. There's a good twist at the end, actually a bit reminiscent of NBC's Life pilot last season, and I also enjoyed the flashback to Jane's glory days as a TV psychic. Fans of crime procedurals will probably find a lot to like.

The bad: If you're not already a fan of the crime procedural, I'm not sure this one will win you over. There are a lot of "odd (fill-in-the-blank profession) with a tortured past" shows on the air right now, and The Mentalist will have to work pretty hard to set itself apart. I didn't get much out of any of the supporting characters, though that could be because the pilot was working so hard to set up Baker as a bankable star.

Will I watch? Perhaps. I wasn't bowled over, but I'm curious to know how the show integrates the story of Baker's past with his current cases.

Brad & Angie Ditch Venice (& Crazy Fans) For Deauville

Just like George, Brad and Angie took Jesse James (the full title of that movie is ridiculously long) right from Venice to the Deauville Film Festival. All of the little kiddies stayed at the hotel as mom and dad posed their way down another red carpet. Casey was adorable alongside Brad for the photocall, but his pregnant wife sat this one out. They all look fabulous and glamorous, but life must always be unimaginably crazy as some of the biggest movie stars in the world. Brad was definitely reminded of this in Venice when a fan got through security and tried to hug him. The video is below and the entire incident is over in a few seconds, but having the whole world feel like they can invade your space like that is pretty surreal.

Naomi's Baby Shower Brings Out Star Power

With her August 2 due date less than two weeks away, Naomi's friends and family threw her a little Baby Shower in LA this weekend. Liev was obviously in charge of documenting the event, and even turned his camera on the awaiting paparazzi. Oh, memories. Someday that baby is going to look back at those pictures and see what a frenzy his/her birth created -- crazy stuff. Naomi's fellow Aussie mom-to-be Isla Fisher was in the house as was Kate Hudson. It looks like Mega Watts Schreiber is going to be a LA baby, despite the fact that the couple has lived in New York for the past few years. Now it's just hurry up and wait for the big day.

The People Have Chosen The Dark Knight

Last night at the People's Choice Awards the fans picked Adam, Reese, Robin, Carrie, Ellen, The Dark Knight and more. The stars thanked the fans since if it wasn't for them, well, they wouldn't have that heavy award. Ellen thanked her roommate Portia, and Reese was thrilled with how her year was starting. Dakota Fanning continues to glow as she grows so perfectly. Kate Hudson was late but she made it in time to pick up her Favorite Leading Lady Award and in her quirky speech she thanked birthday boy Ryder. Unfortunately big winners like Brad and Angelina skipped the show and somehow Two and a Half Men still wins stuff. The big winner of the night was The Dark Knight with 5 out of 5 including favorite action movie, cast and movie! Christian Bale kept the facial hair growing but his acceptance speech was short and sweet with his costar Heath top of mind. Click here to see a complete list of last night's winners.

Brad Talks More Babies at the Venice Film Festival

This weekend Brad and Angie got gorgeous in an old-Hollywood kind of way at the premiere of Brad's new film, The Assassination of Jesse James. Brad was a little more casual, but just as stylish, at the photo call earlier that day. Love the shades! At the events Brad was asked about his desire for more kids. His response,

"Yeah we're ready.... It's the most fun I've ever had and also the biggest pain ... I've ever experienced... I love it and can't recommend it any more highly - although sleep is nonexistent."

Having four small children "makes me much more efficient because when I work, I really have to focus. I know I've less time to get things done. Actually, I'm quite pleased by it."

We know how much Brad loves being a father. Is he dropping hints that it might not be long before they add another one to their camp? As for Casey Affleck - looks like he'll be having another child very soon. He was looking adorable with his pregnant wife Summer Phoenix at the premiere. We're going to see a lot more of Casey as he opens his brother's directorial debut of Gone Baby Gone later this year.

Dakota, Latifah, Paris & Carrie Are People's Red Carpet Choices

It was all about the ladies on the red carpet at last night's People's Choice Awards in LA. Queen Latifah sparkled in purple as the host of the show, yet again, while Debra Messing kept it a little more geometric. Paris Hilton was a nominee this time around for her first presidential video, though she lost in the online sensation category to Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog. Dakota Fanning stood out in her blue one shoulder dress, once again looking perfectly pretty and age appropriate among her older counterparts. She is quite the little lady these days. Some of the bigger names skipped the red carpet and still graced the stage to accept awards, more on that in a bit. Pop Classic: Empire Records

I knew I had the basis of my first Pop Classic when FabUK posted her Back To Cool article, featuring the style of Liv Tyler playing Corey in the 1995 film Empire Records. This movie has been a firm favourite of mine since I rented it out on VHS years ago, without a clue who the actors were. At the time, all I saw were a bunch of weird kids working in a cool record store, and I loved it. As everything 90s is back right now - as seen in The Wackness, a resurgence of plaid shirts and the return of Take That, among other things - I really don't think there's any better time to look back at this film!

The cast is made up of a bunch of well-known and familiar faces, including Liv Tyler as Corey, Renee Zellweger as wild child Gina, Rory Cochrane as oddball Lucas, Ethan Embry as supersweet Mark, Anthony LaPaglia as store manager Joe, Robin Tunney as troubled Debra and gorgeous Johnny Whitworth as artist AJ.

Here's the kind-of-cheesy 90s cinema trailer:

The plot goes like this: On the day that cheesy singer Rex Manning (Maxwell Caulfield) is coming to Empire Records to do a signing, the employees of the store have to band together to "save the Empire", as record store chain Music Town threaten to take over the independent music seller. As the day progresses they have to deal with a gun-toting shoplifter, hash brownie trips, plenty of teen heartache, fake funerals and a whole lot of air guitar, all in and around the store itself.

The movie is full of quotable lines, fun performances and comedic and teen-angsty setpieces, as well as featuring some really awesome music from AC/DC, Throwing Muses, Evan Dando, Edwyn Collins, Better Than Ezra and Flying Lizards. If you haven't seen it yet then I highly recommend it to rent or buy - if only to see Renee Zellweger pre-Bridget Jones! The film's been re-released (since its original bare bones DVD release) as a fanmix edition with extra scenes as part of the WHV List.

Brad Gets Congrats from the Boys in Toronto

Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck had lots of help from their friends for the big premiere of The Assassination of Jesse James at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend. Of course Angelina was right by Brad's side, while Matt Damon and Don Cheadle represented the Ocean's 13 crew and Ben showed the brotherly love. We can't wait to see these hot men playing bad boys on screen and it sounds like it's worth a visit to the movie theater - Brad was just awarded with the best actor title from last week's Venice film festival. He said,

"I could try to play it down, but it's great fun. The nicest thing is how excited my friends are for me and to be amongst the lineage of people that have also been bestowed this honor. It's a really nice honor."

Yay Brad! Could this be a sign of what is to come for this year's award show season? It must have been nice for Brad to have all his boys around to celebrate in his honor. These film festivals are getting us very excited for Fall Movie time!

Hot Hollywoodland

We got a sneak peak at Ben's comeback movie and it was amazing. If you like the old Hollywood murder mystery genre then you are bound to enjoy this flick this weekend. We know Ben doesn't want us to use the "c" word but it's nice to see he finally chose to be in a good movie again. As for his acting - well, he plays an actor so it wasn't a huge stretch but he was very good. The real talent is Adrien Brody. No wonder this guy has an Oscar. He was excellent. The beautiful Diane Lane was also mesmerizing. Check it out this weekend and enjoy! In the meantime, look who made an appearance on the red carpet to support her man. Jennifer Garner is looking amazing again. You go girl!
