    Beowulf: The Movie
Jul 2 2007 - 4:05pm You may have heard about this project of Robert Zemeckis' (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump) to turn the epic poem Beowulf into an animated movie which, it was recently announced, will be screened in IMAX theaters. The movie's official website is up and running (though it basically just features dancing flames, dramatic music and a cast list), and now a Dutch website has posted photos of the posters for the movie, including the one above. The posters aren't groundbreaking, but they have piqued my curiosity in this project.

I doubt I'd be interested if it wasn't for Angelina. And hey, I thought the big deal with Zemeckis was that he did The Polar Express and that Beowulf is promised to have so much cooler animations, but I see the director has been quite busy. Interesting.

Wow seriously where are the screenwriters in Hollywood?!?! A lack of originality in materials is making me look for my fix of movies in other countries like Japan, England and even India. Oh Hollywood, what have you become?

Are they going to do Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" next? LOL I really want to see (well, rather hear) AJ as Grendel's Mother - that will be the best.

I've been eagerly awaiting this for a long time, although I've been hearing some pretty unsatisfactory things about it already. Regardless, John Malkovich has me hooked.

Now, how about a Gilgamesh film?

I think that the prospects of this are quite interesting. It could be a cult favorite if done appropriately (or actually, inappropriately might work for that as well, but I meant in a good way!).

Ah, I remember my (somewhat resentful) cartoon version of beowulf done for an English project in high school. I will probably watch this, pending any terrible trailers, anyhow.

This is a movie/TV/music buzz site. You should probably know who Ray Winstone is. I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but he's a well-respected actor.

Um no. Because my literature class last year saw the live action "Beowulf and Grendel" (in video stores now), and it will be 10x better than that animated stuff.

I've read it and I tend to be of the opinion that a book is better than a movie. And I've never heard of Ray Winstone either, but the rest of the cast is definitely impressive.

Um, I'll probably have to pass, but I won't write it off entirely just yet. I am having a hard time imagining Beowolf as a movie. Even, or perhaps especially, as an animated movie.

Ray Winstone is an English actor. His voice will be perfect for this!! He's been in a lot of movies so you'd definitely know him if you see him. He played Mr. French in "The Departed". He's also going to be in the new Indiana Jones movie but I don't know in what role.

    Angelina @ Comic-Con for Beowulf?

Remember 300? Nobody had heard of the Battle of Thermopylae before then, so I think Beowulf has the potential to be a smash hit, if everything goes right. Superb cast, but I remember reading it in high school - seems difficult to adapt.

It doesn't look like Angelina is scheduled to appear for Beowulf -- but Comic-Con's always come up with huge surprises, so never say never. I don't know if Angelina is done with filming Wanted or if she has another month to go.

The first & only time I saw Angelina in person was at the 2002 Comic Con where she was promoting her 2nd Lara Craft movie. Yes, she's as incredibly beautiful in person as in pictures. When Q&A started, I expected long lines of geeks & fanboys at the mikes. Surprisingly, there were lines and lines of young women testifying how Angelina had been a role model for them -- that they had felt dark, angry, sad and lonely, and had cut themselves too. Angelina had given them hope that they would get through it. My husband and I compared Angelina with Halle Berry's talk (the whole X-Men cast were there), and we both agreed that Halle had been very nice, but that Angelina had made each one of us 6000 in that SRO hall feel as if she was looking into our eyes and speaking to us personally.

I wasn't going to go this year but I might to catch the BEOWULF PREVIEW, get Indy Jones news, listen to Robert Downey Jr.'s panel, and see George Romero, Masi Oka, Matt Groening, Lisa Simpson, Kevin Smith, AND CLIVE OWEN & HIS NEW MOVIE SHOOT 'EM UP!

A Peek at Thursday, July 26

1:30-3:30 Paramount Pictures—Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies present a bold new vision for the future of adventure. Join us for a one-of-a-kind presentation put together just for the fans at Comic-Con as we look at such highly-anticipated films as BEOWULF, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Stardust, Hot Rod, Iron Man, and the next installments of Indiana Jones and Star Trek, plus a few surprises. Appearing in person: JJ Abrams, Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau, Neil Gaiman, Roger Avary and SNL's Andy Samberg. Hall H.

It breaks my heart that someone like Angelina Jolie has to be in a movie about an amazing piece of literature before some people will see it. Don't get me wrong, i love her too, but literature and art should be apprecciated for what it is and not who is portraying it. The 13th warrior did the story justice, and i think this movie will too.

I had a teacher in 8th grade who took olde English as a summer course and had us read parts of this in olde English. At first most of the class thought she was nuts but by the time we were done we LOVED it. We had so much fun learning to use another language and the story kept everyone waiting in anticipation for the next day.

All I have to say is this is Neil doing the script. If you haven't read comics you should read his book American Gods or read some of his children books to get warmed up. He is a terrific writer and the comic fans alone will support this movie. Plus when Stardust comes out people will probably go to see this after they find out Neil is involved.
