Anon, it is longer than a traditional sprint (which is usually 1/2 mi swim, 15-18 mi bike, 1.3 mi run), but logner than an Olympic (1 mi swim, 25 mi bike, 6.2 mi run).
As for "a challenge" --- I disagree with you. Talk to someone who has won a sprint distance - or even someone who came in last - and they will tell you that yes, it is a challenge. It's just
as hard to go fast/ hard for shorter distances than it is to pace yourself and be out there for 13+ hours for longer distances.
I think this is great. Maybe people will see these celebs getting out there and being active and realize that they don't stay thin from breastfeeding and yoga...
Many of the celebs don't do all three events--so before I give accolades, I'd like to know who actually was a triathlete. I believe Huffman last year did only one or two events. So in
addition to commenter #4 saying they are short distances, some people show up just for one event and say they competed. Yeah, it makes me bitter when they happily pose for photo ops and allow
it to sound like they were triathletes!
Good for them! Even if they didn't do all the events, it's still cool to see celebrities out there being active. I've never personally done a tri (can't swim), I respect people who do them.
My cousin has done a couple of sprint-distance tris and yeah, they are definitely tough even though they aren't the length of an Ironman. My cousin wants to do an Ironman someday, but right
now he's just moving into the Olympic length ones. Props to anyone who can do all the events in a tri...I personally would love to do one, but right now I could do the running/biking parts
but the swimming would take me the rest of the whole day because I can only dog-paddle.
I just think it's good that people are out there being active. It doesn't matter that they are doing distances that some deem worthy; it's about being healthy and having fun.
I guess I don't understand why it would make someone bitter.
