At What Age Should You Pay For Your Own Wedding?

Let me just start with a little background: I'm 28. My boyfriend is 34. We'd like to get married sometime in the next two years or so. We've been together for 6.5-ish years now. My question is, and my boyfriend thought I should pose it here on Sugar, when are you too old to ask the father of the bride (my dad) to pay or help pay for the wedding?

I know it's seen as traditional, but I feel like I'm kind of old at this point to ask for help. We probably wouldn't get engaged for another year or so since we'd have to save up for a ring, and although the wedding that I want is pretty small I kind of feel 30-ish is old enough to pay for my own wedding, even if that means delaying it for another couple of years or so (recession = having trouble finding a job). Anyways, any thoughts are appreciated.

Wedding Day Blues

I spent Valentine's Day at a wedding. While I think V-day weddings are cheesy and totally over the top, that isn't what bugged me about this particular wedding. It's that it was on a Sunday. Considering I had to drive three hours to attend this wedding, the fact that the wedding was on a Sunday was a little inconvenient.

An early evening wedding on a Sunday. To me it just isn't polite to your guests. I know your wedding day is supposed to be all about you and your commitment to your groom and all, but sometimes you have to take into consideration the fact that some people might have to travel for your wedding. (And before you say I didn't have to go to the wedding, I kind of did. It was family.)

Now, I know certain cultures have traditions, that you have to get married on certain days. I get that. But if you don't, then to me, Friday or Saturday is a good day to have a wedding. Preferably Saturday. It's just easier on guests and possible wedding party members that will need to travel, especially when you are letting your guest know only three weeks in advance. (Another issue I had with this wedding, but I'll only tackle one thing at a time.) Plus every wedding I've ever been to has been on a Saturday, because it's just easier on everyone involved.

So what do you think? Is it inconsiderate to have a wedding (that doesn't have to adhere to cultural traditions) on any day other than a Friday or Saturday?

We've been counting down to the opening of The Young Victoria tomorrow by looking at the Victorian era and how people flirted and celebrated Christmas. Today we're checking out how people married and what traditions endure today.

Queen Victoria married for love - a rare affair for a woman of royalty in the 19th century. While poorer women had been doing this for ages (less money was at stake), it was during the Victorian era that romantic love became a priority for marriage. See what other customs grew out of this period.

Robert Pattinson Politely Declined My Cousin's Wedding Invitation!

When my cousin Brian got married this past June, he and his fiance Leah decided they would invite a few "dream" guests. They sent invitations to Barack Obama, Albert Pujols (go Cardinals!), and, of course, the most-dreamy of them all Robert Pattinson. Not surprisingly, none of these guests could attend. Albert Pujols ignored the invitation. The White House sent a sweet, but standard, card of congratulations. And Robert? He took it to the next level by sending a signed and delicious photo of himself congratulating the couple by name. I think this is the sweetest thing I've ever heard!

Do You Think You Could Have a Last-Minute Wedding?

It's only the third season of Gossip Girl and we're seeing Lily wed for the second time - nevermind her countless marriages before the show! When the last-minute wedding fails to materialize, Lily and Rufus make another snap decision to get married that night in the Humphreys' Brooklyn loft with Sonic Youth as the wedding band (weird!).

I like the idea of a spontaneous wedding, especially when you've had an on-off relationship for 20 years, but I'm not sure I could actually go through with it. Do you think you could tie the knot on the spot without worrying about loose strings?

Were you aware that it is 9/9/09? Even if you're not, tens of thousands of Chinese couples will remember for you. They're all racing to get married today, because the number nine is supposed to be lucky. (In Chinese, the word for nine sounds a lot like the word for "forever.") And in Vegas, where nine doesn't sound like forever but some couples are getting married anyway? Maybe they just like the look of 9/9/09.
