It's safe to say that most of you buy albums for the tunes, but cover art is a whole other beast in itself, and believe it or not, a lot of time and energy is spent to make it right. So, if there's an album cover that strikes your fancy, I give you permission to pull its spine out from the rows of records on your bookcase and let it shine. Album covers make easy art and look much more precious if you display them in a Lucite album box.

Here, in the Modern by Design showhouse, Gary Hutton transformed the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers with an affordable box from TAP Plastics. Got any records worthy of becoming décor?

Free Music: Listen to Amy Winehouse Online

Amy Winehouse has already gotten lots of attention for her wild ways; her best-known song is called "Rehab" for chrissakes. But it's so easy to love her smooth Motown-style music, which combines stunning Phil Spector-like production with Winehouse's hard-livin' vocals and cheeky lyrics. As I've said before, she's like the sultrier and more interesting British counterpart to Norah Jones.

Winehouse's new album, Back in Black, is hitting U.S. stores tomorrow, so AOL Music is hosting a CD listening party, where you can sample the album in its entirety. I, for one, think it's incredibly fun. I'll be interested to see if Winehouse's music catches on in the States, since our country is quite fickle in terms of embracing British artists. What do you guys think?

We all love things that others love to hate, whether it's a Counting Crows CD you can't get rid of or your "Degrassi Junior High" boxed set. Now I'm giving you a chance to explain yourselves in a new feature called Defend This.

This week, I'm calling all you Pink Floyd lovers out there to defend the band's 1979 double-album The Wall. I, for one, have spent many hours arguing the merits of this album - from the school-kid choirs to the bizarre WWII imagery and even Roger Waters' self-indulgent songwriting.

But while it's cool to like Piper at the Gates of Dawn or "Wish You Were Here," it takes a pretty devoted fan to stare down the mobs of music snobs who make fun of The Wall. So, if you're feeling up to it ... on your marks, get set, defend!

Free Download! Talib Kweli and Madlib Album

I love free album downloads, and not just because they're free. I just like getting free samples of music I might not otherwise listen to. Case in point: Liberation, the new collaboration between Talib Kweli and Madlib. Right now, the duo is offering the album as a free download online; you get a Zip file and import the songs into your iTunes or other software. I'm really digging the mellow vibe, and the album has the lyrical acrobatics I've come to expect from Madlib. Give it a listen and tell me what you think.

With his upcoming album, Nas is declaring that Hip Hop Is Dead, and considering the rather lackluster year that hip-hop has had, he may be right. But Nas's latest release is still one of the most anticipated albums as we finish off the year, so it's no surprise that Hip Hop Is Dead has been leaked on the Web. You can listen to the whole thing on MTV's web site, and if you like it, you can preoder the album before hits stores Dec. 19.

Early Listen: Of Montreal's New Album

Of Montreal may not be a household name, but the versatile band has been writing great psychedelic pop songs since 1997. Better yet, Of Montreal's music just gets catchier and more cohesive with each new release. Its upcoming album, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, follows in the frenzied footsteps of 2004's stellar Satanic Panic in the Attic, and although the album doesn't go on sale until Jan. 23, the band's label, Polyvinyl, is offering a streaming version on its web site. Fans of Beck and Apples in Stereo will love this funky, fun record; you can also preorder the album now.

As a connoisseur of bad, someone else's worst is actually what I consider best. Like these odd Christmas album covers, for example. Who wouldn't want both to own and hear these things?! A Heino or Colonel Sanders or - gasp - Liberace Christmas? Count me in!
