Movie Preview: Broken Embraces

Broken Embraces looks like classic Pedro Almodovar: a sweeping story with a heavy dose of film noir, beautiful to look at, and a dazzling Penelope Cruz. There's a reason the director and his muse always work together - he brings out her strongest performances; she serves as a captivating leading lady. (She even got an Academy Award nomination for his film Volver.)

If the trailer for Broken Embraces is any indication, Cruz may just have critics whispering Oscar again. The film follows an aspiring actress (Cruz) stuck in a marriage to an overbearing guy with deep pockets. But in secret, she's in love with her director. Yes, it's in Spanish with subtitles, but the movie looks packed with passion and mystery, which should make for some very good popcorn-eating. Penelope Cruz Has Two Things to Talk About in Vanity Fair

Penelope Cruz has made headlines lately due to speculation over her possible pregnancy, but she's on the cover of November's Vanity Fair to discuss her two upcoming films, Nine and Broken Embraces. She showed off her sexy back and even touched on Javier Bardem, revealing that he's the superior air guitarist in the relationship. Here's more:

On being a worrier: "I've always been a worrier. Since I was a little girl I've always felt that if I had a moment of peace I'd wonder: Are you sure you can afford to feel like this?"
On working with Almodovar again: "Pedro would push me to the limit. He really knows how to press all my buttons. You can only go into something like that when it's somebody you really trust. I always feel like he's my safety net. Like I can fly and go far, because he's going to catch me. The biggest [panic] attack I had during the movie was the scene where, for the first time, Lena [her character] makes the decision to try to become an actress. I don't know what happened to me that day, but before and after we filmed I could not breathe."
On hanging out at her mom Encarna's hair salon as a child: "It was my first acting school. I would pretend to be doing my homework, but I was really observing the women. I found their behavior mesmerizing - what they were hiding, how they left feeling a little different after they'd been helped to become a little more like whom they wanted to look like. They treated the place a little bit like a psychologist's office."
On comparing kissing Scarlett Johansson and Charlize Theron in movies: "No matter how I answer that I will be in trouble. Both were pretty beautiful partners."

The pair has been in nonstop promotional mode for Broken Embraces, and their close relationship shines through in the interview. Penelope never misses a moment to talk about her love and admiration for Almodovar, including in her Oscar acceptance speech last month. The two friends have made multiple movies together, and their real-life bond is just as strong as their working partnership.

Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem. Their names alone conjure up images of sexy. Separately they're steamy, but together you need a fire squad to tame the flames. Most recently, the pair costarred in Woody Allen's movie Vicky Christina Barcelona. They also shared the screen in 1997 in Pedro Almodovar's steamy Carne Trémula (though Pen had a very small part). I can go on and on about how gorgeous these two Spaniards look together, but I'm here to talk about their styles.
Here is a couple who is the opposite of the always-fancy Brad and Angelina. Javier is rugged, Penelope laid-back chic, but when they hit the red carpet, they deliver. What's particularly charming is that they always wear coordinating colors (whether it's deliberate or not) and have a fondness for baseball caps. And when they're vacationing in their bathing suits? Penelope Brings Her Broken Embraces and Oscar to Spain

Penelope Cruz held on tight to her best friend and director Pedro Almodovar at a Barcelona screening of their latest collaboration, Broken Embraces. The inseparable duo, along with some of the film's other stars, have already started promoting the movie in Spain, though it won't be hitting theaters stateside until November. With her Oscar win fresh on everyone's mind, Penelope has been fielding lots of questions about her new little gold man. She recently spoke of its whereabouts, saying, "the Oscar has come with me to Spain, and I am going to leave it here. For now, I have no idea what this award is going to mean for me." Penelope sounds humble as ever, but her native country must be pleased to have their Academy darling and her statue back home.

Penelope Embraces Pedro as They Start Promoting in Madrid

Penelope Cruz touched down in Madrid yesterday afternoon after spending some time in LA this week. It's time for her to start promoting Broken Embraces before it opens in Spain next week, and earlier today she joined her best friend and the film's director, Pedro Almodovar, and a costar, Blanca Portillo, at their first photo call. There are sure to be many photo ops in store for Penelope and Pedro, as she expects to be traveling on behalf of the movie until November. Hopefully, though, Penelope will find a little time in her busy schedule to see a certain someone on our Spring shirtless wish list.

She's not one of the usuals we see taking in basketball games, but she looked gorgeous chatting with a friend and munching on snacks as she watched. Pretty soon she'll be heading home as her newest Pedro Almodovar movie, Broken Embraces, premieres in Spain on March 18.

Penelope's Pseudo-Booty

Penelope has been promting Volver for what seems like a decade already. The actress who was recently seen with her ex is now in Toronto for the film festival. She knows how to make the movie relevant to the American press - she talked about her ass. Or in this case, her fake one. Here's more:

"I couldn't leave the set. I didn't want to take my false ass off. There was an emotional attachment. I was a disaster for two months. I was unbearable," she told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, shortly before the Spanish movie had its gala North American premiere.

Almodovar said he wanted Cruz to wear that "false ass" -- one of the more famous props of recent cinema -- to make her character, Raimunda, resemble an Italian film heroine of the 1950s.

Sitting next to Cruz at a news conference, Almodovar dissected her body parts, saying the 32-year-old Spanish actress has a small head, an ample bosom but a "slender ass." As he pointed each part out, Cruz smiled.

"The ass is very important. I wanted a fake bottom like Dustin Hoffman had in 'Tootsie.' ... This is what I want for her. Having a generous ass made her look close to the ground. These are important decisions to make because once you have the physical part, you can work on the spiritual part," Almodovar said.

Penelope Cruz Is About to Get Canned

Penelope Cruz chatted away on her phone after leaving the Dolce & Gabbana store in Madrid on Wednesday - we can think of one person in particular who might be responsible for that smile. She's been busy prepping for her next collaboration with Pedro Almodovar, but at the end of May the Spanish beauty will be off to Cannes! Her Vicky Cristina Barcelona will be premiering at the film festival, and we'll be getting double the fun since her man Javier also stars in the movie. The poor guy recently had to drop out of a movie due to his exhaustive work year and award season, but we hope he still makes it to France for some red carpet flirting with Penelope.
