Movie Preview: Amanda Seyfried in Letters to Juliet

Amanda Seyfried's latest film Letters to Juliet looks like a mash up of her other work. First off, her character's name is Sophie, which brings Mamma Mia to mind, as does the romantic foreign locale. But even the title itself made me do a double-take - wait, isn't she already doing a book-turned-film about letters called Dear John?! Still, I'm not writing it off just yet. (No pun intended). I can be a sucker for a love story, even if it's a bit sappy.

The film follows Seyfried as an American tourist who discovers an unanswered "letter to Juliet" while on a trip in Verona, Italy. (The notes are left by visitors asking for help from Shakespeare's famous heroine.) She responds to the plea, and then sets off to find its author (Vanessa Redgrave) and reunite her with the man she left decades before. Of course, there's a triangle in there too, as Sophie begins to question her own relationship with her fiance (Gael Garcia Bernal) and falls for the woman's grandson (Christopher Egan).

The trailer pretty much gives away the whole movie, but this sort of storyline is usually predictable so I'll forgive the studio for it. Bonus for Taylor Swift fans: her "Love Story" is the theme song. The film doesn't arrive in theaters until May, but check it out and tell me what you think when you read more.

Hollywood Ladies Come Out to Support GQ's Men of the Year

The Chateau Marmont hosted GQ's Men of the Year Awards last night in LA. A few of the magazine's honorees, including Zach Galifianakis, Tom Ford, and Neil Patrick Harris joined forces with starlets like Olivia Wilde and AnnaLynne McCord. January Jones hit the carpet alongside Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter as Alexander Skarsgard, who won a "Man Who Saved HBO" award, went from LAX to the bash - click here to check out the full list of winners.

Alexander stayed close to rumored girlfriend Kate Bosworth, despite recent reports of her being linked to other guys. Sarah Silverman, meanwhile, was there to keep Zach company as his fellow funny man Russell Brand took a night off from romancing Katy Perry to mingle with Quentin Tarantino. Lindsay Lohan also turned up for the event while drama with her father seems to finally be cooling off.

Emotional Robbie Finally Reunites With Take That On Stage

As expected, Robbie Williams joined his old Take That band mates on stage at the Royal Albert Hall last night as part of the Children In Need concert. It was the first time in 15 years Robbie had performed alongside Howard, Mark, Gary and Jason, and he was understandably emotional and was in tears. Although Robbie and Take That didn't perform a song as a five-piece, they did sing together in the show's finale performance of "Hey Jude" alongside Paul McCartney and the other acts who performed on the night, like Leona Lewis. Cheryl Cole performed with Snow Patrol, Lily Allen joined Take That for "Shine", and Shirley Bassey and Dizzee Rascal sang together. Check out video of Robbie's TT reunion after the jump!

Dominic Cooper's Night of Bromance and Romance

Dominic Cooper was out at the Groucho last night in London, following his girlfriend Amanda Seyfried's premiere for Chloe. Amanda had some rivalry for Dominic's affections though, as his buddy James Corden was out on the town too getting close as they laughed on the street. It was Amanda who Dominic went home with at the end of the night though, and possibly might be more often as she's spoken about wanting to move to London! Last night she said:

"I would move to London in a heartbeat. It's the scenery, but also being in the big city, the architecture, the history of it and the fact that a lot of people I love most in my life live here."

Wouldn't you love to see that? Dominic and Amanda are such a lovely couple!

Last night at the London Film Festival, actress Amanda Seyfreid arrived on the red carpet with straight hair, (albeit with tonnes of body) for the UK Premiere of her latest film Chloe. Earlier in the day, she was spotted with co-star Julianne Moore with casual looking wavy hair. And just last month at the Toronto Film Festival, she promoted her flick with beautifully constructed retro-curls. I adore her thick and shiny mane, so to me, she can't really go wrong with any of these hairstyles. How about you, which look do you find most flattering on Amanda?

Amanda and Julianne Bring Chloe Kisses to LFF

Amanda Seyfried and Elle cover star Julianne Moore cuddled up for a photocall for their new film Chloe at the London Film Festival yesterday. Amanda stars as the eponymous escort Chloe in the thriller, who is hired by Julianne's character to seduce her husband (played by Liam Neeson) whom she suspects is unfaithful. The female costars share a kiss in the movie, and we'll get to see Amanda's kiss with Megan Fox on our big screens in two weeks, when Jennifer's Body is released. Off-screen, however, Amanda is sticking to kissing boys, as Dominic Cooper has confirmed the couple are "still very much together". Aww.

Movie Preview: Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried in Dear John

You were all pretty split on your feelings about Channing Tatum, but we can all agree that the actor has made a name for himself as the muscle-bound sensitive guy. He gets even deeper into that archetype in Dear John, an adaption from the Nicholas Sparks novel where he plays the love interest of Amanda Seyfried.

The two fall for each other one Summer while Seyfried's character Savannah is home from college and Tatum's John is home on leave. When they have to leave each other and return to their respective obligations, they begin writing letters to keep in touch, hence the title.

Normally I would be holding my nose for this schlockfest, but I can't deny the talent of director Lasse Hallstrom, the charisma of the two leads, or the major soft spots I have for The Notebook and A Walk to Remember - movies made from Sparks books. And there's another bonus: Six Feet Under's Richard Jenkins as John's dad. To watch the trailer and decide if it's going to be a cheesy mess or a heart-tugger, just read more.

Amanda and Dominic in NYC, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

Amanda Seyfried was back to kissing boys as she shared a smooch with Dominic Cooper at Bar Pitti restaurant in Manhattan yesterday, having kissed both Megan Fox and Julianne Moore for recent film roles, much to Dominic's delight. The couple are in New York following their trip to the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month, where they both had films to promote. Amanda managed to combine business with pleasure at lunch, as she dined with Gary Winick, director of her latest film Letters to Juliet, which is due out in the UK on 21 May 2010. It's great to see Amanda and Dominic happy as ever, following the rumours of another woman. With Amanda shooting down rumours about a Mamma Mia! sequel, we'll have to content ourselves with seeing the couple out and about, rather than on screen together.

Jennifer's Body: Half-Baked High School Horror

The first thing you should know about Jennifer's Body is that this movie is not terrifying. Yes, there's a bit of gore and a few cringe-worthy moments (like when Jennifer smiles through a mouthful of blood), but the scariest parts are given away in the trailer. It's more of a high school comedy than a slasher flick, and you can see the transitions from funny to freaky coming a mile away.

The second thing you should know is that this movie is not Juno. Though the two films penned by Diablo Cody fall into different genres, I was still hoping for some of the same magic from her award-winning little movie. Instead, certain elements - like the invented teenage slang - didn't bother me in Juno but really annoyed me in Jennifer's Body.

The movie's not all bad though, so to read more of my thoughts, just read more.

Cody sets the scene in Devil's Kettle, a small town that rarely sees a scandal worthy of its name. As Jennifer, Megan Fox is that girl we all knew in high school - gorgeous, but not unrealistic. Bitchy, but not made of stone. Like Mean Girls' Regina George, every girl wants to be friends with Jennifer, though her nerdy BFF Needy (Amanda Seyfried) gets most of her attention. Jennifer and her cropped hoodies are the object of desire of most of the guys at school, and even Needy is kinda obsessed with her in a sexual way.

When a night out goes horribly wrong, Needy loses track of Jennifer and when they reunite, nothing is the same. Needy quickly learns that Jennifer has been possessed, but her boyfriend and the rest of the community are too distracted by a local tragedy to hear Needy's story. She's constantly struggling to make sense of Jennifer's newly evil ways, though at the same time she's still mesmerized by Jennifer's charms just like everyone else.

Though Cody gets certain aspects of high school down cold, there are other parts that drove me crazy. The movie has some very funny moments, and I found myself laughing along with the audience a lot more than I had expected. The bad news is that a lot of the humor just feels so forced. We get it: Megan Fox is hot and it's funny to exploit her sex appeal. Does that mean it should be shoved down our throats? Some things are better left unsaid.

The central focus of the movie is Megan/Jennifer and her body (speaking of nonsubtleties) and her relationship with Needy. Amanda Seyfried is fun to watch once again, providing layers and depth to a character surrounded by shallow plot lines. As the only person who is onto Jennifer's secret, we watch as Needy goes from average teenage girl to terrified best friend, torn between honoring her friendship and saving her town from evil.

Surprisingly, the best characters in the movie are the guys. I've unabashedly had a crush on Adam Brody since his Seth Cohen days and loved seeing him back on the big screen. Brody plays the stereotypical, guy-liner wearing lead singer of a band, but with an evil streak. Despite some truly disturbing antics, he and his band have some of the funniest moments in the film. I also really liked Johnny Simmons as Needy's boyfriend Chase, and Kyle Gallner as one of the students who has his eye on Jennifer. After seeing so many movies centered around misogynistic high school boys, it's refreshing to see the roles reversed for a change as Jennifer is the one preying on the unsuspecting, innocent guys.

The bottom line: this isn't the worst move you'll ever see, but don't expect greatness. If you're interested enough to shell out $13 bucks for a ticket, you probably won't be disappointed - but I don't think you'll regret waiting for the DVD either.
