No, I'm not insinuating that Amy Winehouse is a coward, in fact, she's anything but a shrinking violet going to court yesterday in a fashionable Vivienne Westwood outfit to fight an assault claim against her. All I'm saying is that Amy's gone blonde! Typically, we see her hair dark and styled in an ultra-teased half up, half down bee-hive. However, it appears that she's added an orangey-yellow streak to the left side of her fringe. Do you like this look on the controversial singer, or would you prefer Amy to go back to black?

A high spirited Amy Winehouse visited her old flat in Camden last night. She wore a scruffy tee shirt but all eyes were on her latest hairstyle. Amy's new short perm looked messy but admittedly super shiny as she scampered around London wearing not a scrap of makeup.

It's refreshing to see Amy making a change from her enormous beehive and I like how this cut makes her hair look naturally thick and healthy. It feels hard to judge Amy's appearance too harshly right now, seeing as she's going through such a rough time. How about you, do you think this new do suits Amy?

How-To: A Honey of a Hive

For those of you saucy Bella Donnas who strive for a hip beehive that stars such as Amy Winehouse are making chic again, here's an easy way to recreate this punkier and slightly messier version of the popular '50s hairstyle at home.

There's no doubt that you can use a wig, like makeup artist and hairstylist Yvette Beebe did here for Halloween. But if you want to rock a hive with your own hair in under five, you'll need:

a styling spray
a comb
a set of bobby pins
firm hold hairspray

STEP 1: If possible, don't wash your hair the day you plan to create this style. It's helpful if hair has a little bit of natural grease in it. The first step is to divide your hair into two sections: top and bottom.
STEP 2: Next, spritz the crown of your hair with a styling spray and then tease it underneath to create airy volume.
STEP 3: When your hair is nice and stiff from all of the back-combing, turn the bottom part of the hair that you just back-combed and get ready to pin it in place. But here's the crucial part - before you secure it, push the hair forward so that you create some height. When you've got that beehivey look, begin securing it in pieces with as many bobby pins as necessary so that it holds.
STEP 4: Lastly, gently comb any fly-away hairs back and mist the heck out of your entire head with a firm hold hairspray. It won't move much, but that's the point, isn't it?

With hair accessories suddenly back in fashion (I'm talking scrunchies, feathers at Chanel and headscarves at Paul Smith) it's no wonder that floral tributes are also back in style.

Amy Winehouse often performs with oversize, blood-red roses in her barnet, and Daisy Lowe recently channeled a hippy vibe, wearing tiny rosebuds strewn across her mane.

I remember five years ago wearing big, floral hair clips from Accessorize, but I'm not feeling that girlie nowadays.

Festival Chic Part 4: Daisy Lowe's Flower Power Hair

What with Reading and Leeds festivals this weekend, as well as various London events like Notting Hill Carnival and Get Loaded in the Park, there was a lot of festival chic going on, beauty-wise.

I adore Daisy Lowe's flower-strewn hair, at the Clapham, Get Loaded in The Park event, while Kate Moss went for a twisted, half up, half down do, again, at Reading.

All this laid back loveliness has got me thinking about the key to cool festival hair. Good dry shampoo, definitely, but in terms of style, it seems that the less you looked like you've tried, the better.

Here's what to aim for: Just read more

Hair should look unbrushed but not straggly. Make sure you have a good cut and a deep condition, and then even if you don't brush your locks for a few days, it should look just the right side of messy.
If your hair's long, then use it as a canvas for decoration. Think flowers, like Daisy, or add clips and fabric bows, like Amy Winehouse.
Plaits, like Kate Moss, always look great, as they disguise slightly greasy hair, as well as having a hippy vibe that is perfectly suited to the festival environment. Plus when you take them out, your hair will be artfully kinked and wavy. Easy, huh?
Anything a bit rock chick works well too. So grow your fringe over your eyes (like Daisy) or if you have a short crop, spike it up, like blonde bombshell Pixie Geldof.
For some reason, despite the mud and rain, the cool girls always wear their hair down at a festival. Could be that in wellies and denim/leather, it's good to add some traditional femininity to the mix. Just a spritz of hairspray should keep your hair from looking overly frizzy – this is one place where mussed up hair looks better than super sleek styles anyway.

Amy Gets By With A Little Help From Her Friends

Despite no longer collaborating with Mark Ronson on the Bond theme, Amy Winehouse is keeping busy, splitting her time between recording studios and hanging out with her friends. With rumours still not dying down about her husband Blake and the "mystery blonde", including yesterday's apparent revelation that they are plotting to get as much money as they can out of the singer, I'd imagine she's spending a lot of time on the phone to her publicist. Although I've no idea if that was what she was doing while her friends got some food shopping from the supermarket...

I really hope her friends are giving her the support she needs right now. Amy's also been giving the beehive a little time off lately, although perhaps she should give her hair a rest from all that styling for a while, as it certainly seems to be taking its toll on her locks.
