Look of the Day: Disarming In Army

TheStyleSample may be wearing a military-inspired outfit, but to me she's disarming in army. Her look is layering done so right. First, I love the green bustier top; in fact, I tried something similar during a recent vintage-shopping run. The oversize khaki shirt is also super cool and tames the sexiness of the bustier. Her newsboy cap and boyfriend jeans pull in masculinity while her sandals and jewels keep things girlie.

Unfortunately she didn't give us the details of her look so come back and tell us!

Army Suicides Likely Surpass Combat Deaths in January

When an Army official says "This is terrifying. We do not know what's going on," there's a problem. It may be looking at the grimmest suicide statistics yet. If the seven confirmed suicides plus 17 pending cases are compared to the 16 combat deaths in January, it seems the Army's previous fear may be reality: more deaths by suicide than combat.

Col. Kathy Platoni, the Army's chief psychologist, cites Winter weather for the sudden rise, but with four suicides last January, that seems tangential at best. More likely, she says, the culprit is multiple deployments, disrupted mental-health care, and the stigma attached to taking antidepressants and seeking therapy.

After record suicide numbers in 2008 (128), the Army is taking more precautions. It will soon begin screening all soldiers to identify those at risk for suicide. A program launching this month will help soldiers recognize suicide signs and employ intervention methods, and another in the Spring will focus on prevention. New training will also prepare soldiers and families to cope with war before, during, and after deployment.

While encouraging, these steps seem so basic and obvious, I do wonder what they did before.

Join The Army, Get The Gals

In America, you're told to "Be All That You Can Be" by joining the Army. In Ukraine, I guess that translates into being a ladies' man. The following is a recruitment video for the Ukrainian armed forces. It's so over the top (dry ice and all), it's good. No translation necessary.

Who Needs a Terracotta Army When There's a "Pannacotta" One?

Twenty of China's famous Terracotta soldiers are currently on display at the British Museum in London. The exhibit, which runs until April 6, 2008, is the largest of its kind outside of China.

So what do terracotta soldiers have to do with food? The folks at The Pastry Case bakery have created their own army. Dubbed "The Pannacotta Army" - although no pannacotta is actually involved - the army consists of over 200 miniature gingerbread warriors, each in their own battle garb.

According to a press release, Kelly Burgess of Roberts Bakery/The Pastry Case said:

"We have been amazed at the interest shown in the Terracotta army and wanted to treat Cheshire visitors to a private viewing, so we came up with our own idea of the Pannacotta Army."

The army will be on display at the Nantwich Food and Drink Festival in Cheshire County, UK.

I'd love to see the terracotta soldiers, but think a gingerbread army is fantastic too. What do you think?

I am all about multitasking, especially when it comes to gear. I like to keep my purse to a smaller size so being able to throw in a few all-in-one tools are a life, and back, saver.

An Unlikely Pair: The Army and Acupuncture

Listening to NPR this morning, I almost choked on my toothbrush: the US military is using acupuncture to treat chronic pain.

Not known for its liberal leanings, the defense department is deploying alternative medicine as a weapon against chronic pain. Well, not all wings of the military; just the Air Force has an acupuncture clinic, which it opened in 2002. While the army used to rely solely on medication to treat chronic pain, they have found acupuncture to have minimal to no side affects, no complications, and no interactions with pharmaceuticals. One soldier, experiencing phantom leg pain post-amputation, explained that in the short term acupuncture treated the pain more effectively and more quickly than medication, but admitted that needling might not have a long lasting effect on the pain. He said the acupuncture left him euphoric, where pain meds leave him loopy.

The military advises that acupuncture is by no means a replacement for western medicine, but a great complement to existing techniques to ease the pain of injured soldiers. Have you ever been needled? What is your take on acupuncture?

Do You Watch Army Wives on Lifetime?

I'm way behind. You all were chatting about Army Wives coming back for Season two in the comments last week, and my interest was piqued. I caught the encore of the season premiere last night, and I clearly have catching up to do.

The New York Times latest review makes it sound like a show with a complex message saying, ". . . at the heart of the show is a deep skepticism about the psychological impact of military culture on family life, a distaste for the brand of masculinity it breeds. . . Army Wives reminds you how rare it is on television to bear witness to the shoddily appointed space. And how rarer still to see women who don’t know a whit about labels."

And uh, the scene with Roxy and her husband on the video? And the husband who was crying by his daughter's bedside? Amanda? Who is this? Help! I think I'm hooked. Plus John McCain watches it with Cindy. Are you a fan? Do we need to watch and recap? Will you fill me in on what I've missed?
