I know I said ballet-inspired looks are happening but this is ballerina overkill! This Rampage Brocade and Tulle Ballerina Dress, on sale for $71.99 (originally $129), is too froofy and too pink if you ask me. Though it may make a killer Halloween costume one day...what do you think? Love it or hate it?

When I was young, I used to pretend I was a ballerina and dressed up in tutus everywhere I went. I know, it sounds a little silly, but I'm sure raccoon_hime feels me. Her dancer style is so ethereal and cute. I like how she turned her short dress into a ballet-style skirt - way to use your imagination.

Battle of the Rodarte: Watson vs. Bosworth

The Rodarte sisters, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, cohosted a special dinner last night with Kate Bosworth at the Harvey Nichols Fifth Floor restaurant in London. Of her peach silk and net Rodarte dress, Kate Bosworth said: "It's kind of deconstructed ballerina." If Kate was a deconstructed ballerina, then actress Emma Watson was a rebel dancer in her bold black, blue, and white Rodarte frock. Both stars wore Rodarte's Spring frocks beautifully, but only one can win this battle. Who's it gonna be?

Backstage Pass: Ballerina Beauty at John Rocha

Lace-inspired knits, barely-there chiffon and light-as-air folds, ruffles and pleats gave the John Rocha show an unassuming air of femininity, contrasted with strong shapes and a palette that was anchored in black. The models looked like other-worldly ballerinas with uniform top knots and buns secured with multiple, visible kirby grips. Samantha Hillerby created a hair look that appeared slightly unfinished, as though the girls were still backstage. An undone feel, combined with a youthful style added to the ethereal mood.

Makeup-wise the nostalgia of the ballerina prevailed but with a surprisingly modern edge. Faces were powdery white and looked almost dusty while makeup artist Sam Bryant kept the brows strong as the focus of the face. Sam used Bobbi Brown products for a beautifully feminine and whimsical effect. Lips were kept neutral, either in the palest baby pink or with a touch of beige colour, and the texture was overwhelmingly matte. Meanwhile, circles of carefully blended peach blush added luminosity and stopped the white-base looking overly theatrical.

Towards the end of the show the milky neutral palette turned colourful, as dresses in bright bolts of yellow, turquoise and electric blue stormed the runway. Vintage-style hats and fascinators with net veils in cream added a more demure edge, whilst canary yellow flowers worn in the hair, complete with netting, gave the girls a birds of paradise feel.

Fashion Graduate Speaks Out: Karlie Symone Whitehead

Karlie Symone Whitehead has just completed a Fashion BA at the University of Central Lancashire. She showed her feminine collection of pastel knitted dresses last week as part of Graduate Fashion Week and we caught up with her to find out about her inspiration and future plans.

What was the inspiration behind your collection? My inspiration was looking at body contour and silhouettes of the female form; I took the shapes and created them with the corsetry wire for a unique and new concept.
I also looked at ballerina costumes to see how the tulle layers are created to give a feminine full look.
I named my collection "Captured Contour" as I felt it captured the mood of my collection perfectly.

Which is your favourite piece? The ballerina-esque tutu corset dress as I love the soft grey alpaco yarn knitted for the corset next to the layers and layers of tulle. Its so girly & feminine, with a hint of sexiness as the back is low and revealing, I feel not only does it sum up my collection but me as a designer also.
Did you encounter any problems with creating your line and how did you overcome them? As I'm a perfectionist I encountered a few minor problems that I wasn’t happy with but if I was unsure about anything I would work on it until it was perfect. It did get a little stressful at times but I loved every second of producing my collection from design to pattern cutting, knitting my fabric and actually making it. The whole process gave me a sense of achievement each time I completed a piece, it has definitely been the most exciting part of my life so far. Seeing my collection for the first time on the catwalk in the gala show made me feel like the last four years of late nights, lack of sleep & sheer hard work has definitely paid of & was worth every second.
Which designers do you admire? I admire many different designers for various reasons, one of my favourites is John Galliano as I love his concepts and how his shows are brought to life in a very theatrical way, I love the impact he makes & his collections every season. A few other of my favourites include Mathew Williamson as he is a very successful businessman, Chloe for the feminine, soft, luxurious look & Zac Posen for his couture stunning dresses.
Which person would you like to see wearing your clothes? Anybody who shows my clothes off to their best potential & anyone that feels comfortable, feminine, sexy and stunning wearing my creations. I've no particular person in mind just anyone that likes my ideas.
What are your plans post-graduation? I'm definitely considering starting my own business as I feel I would love nothing more than to create my designs and see them worn on females who appreciate gorgeous clothes.
I do want to get some more experience behind me first as I feel there is always more to learn in the fashion industry.
If you could work for any designer/design house which would it be? Christian Dior without a doubt, I’ve always loved Dior, looking back at the new look and the collections today, its truly feminine and always makes an impact, I would love to meet John Galliano & see how he creates his lines.
Any predictions for Autumn/Winter 2008-9? I feel anything individual will work, I think design is about creating something new, fresh and unique. I would love a soft, feminine silhouette to be a huge trend and girly fun layers as this would definitely mean I’ve done something right.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Steve J and Yoni P

Steve J and Yoni P are relatively new names to the fashion spectrum but already have a Topshop collaboration under their belts and have now shown their fourth collection to London Fashion Week. Both designers were born in Korea (their show today took place at the Korean center) but trained in London at Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion.

Today the show used models and ballerinas to present their collection. The show was more of performance than a catwalk presentation which is interesting when you consider the need for fashion shows to adapt and modernise. Like Roland Mouret said, "There will come a time when the fashion shows as we know them will end."

The collection seemed to be divided in to two sections with a ballet interlude separating the two parts. The first part felt younger with delicate pink baby-doll dresses given shape with exposed white hoop skirts. They explained their influence, "Our collection has been inspired by our surrounding environment, particularly constructive architecture and the linear, almost endless repeats of design details in both buildings and supporting structures."

The pieces included plenty of folds and drapes creating origami-like shapes. This changed the seemingly simple shape of the dresses. The colour palette was quite simple using orange, pink and blue with metallic detailing.

Backstage Beauty: Marchesa

Ever since seeing Dita Von Teese in a feathered Marchesa dress, I've been amazed by the intricate beauty of the designers' creations. There's an elegant extravagance to their creations, balancing luxury and refinement. At last week's show, the hair and makeup teams created a simple and flawless look for the models, and because it's something that anybody can wear, I thought I'd share a few tips.

A team of stylists from Rita Hazan Salon wrapped the models' hair into simple ballerina bun. "It's very simple and easy," said stylist Juan Carlos. Nothing is too fussy-hair is just slightly teased a little bit to create a little flyaway and softness so the hair can flow as the girls walk. The bun is more or less a classic ballerina, but in an undone way."

Makeup artist Talia Shobrook used Stila on the models' faces. Ever since Stila's founder, Jeanine Lobell, sold the company, I haven't thought of Stila as a line so closely linked to fashion. But it was a lot of fun to see the new spring colors being used on such a high-style show. The skin was matte, the smoky eye was soft, and the lips and cheeks had a natural flush (thanks to Cherry Crush lip and cheek stain. One tip I wouldn't have thought of: Shobrook used brown mascara on lashes, then applied black Major Lash on just the tips. Check out the makeup chart:
