2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Barbie

The worlds of fashion and beauty are traditionally youth-obsessed, but today's most crowded show featured a 50-year-old muse. The tents were swarming with people (including quite a few little girls) who wanted to peek at the doll's runway show. Fashion's heavy hitters, including Calvin Klein and Alexander Wang, created outfits inspired by the doll. And the hair and makeup, as you'll see, is equally dolled-up. (Full disclosure: While Barbie is a sponsor of BellaSugar during Fashion Week, I'm being honest in saying that this show seemed to be on everyone's lips - it's been the most fun one by far.) Christian Louboutin Thinks Barbie Has Cankles

I feel bad for Barbie. After enduring decades of criticism for being too thin and having not of this world proportions, legendary shoe designer Christian Louboutin says Barbie's cankles just won't do for his red-soled masterpieces.

Louboutin is the latest in a line of high-fashion designers to makeover the iconic doll. He's created three head-to-toe looks for her, which even includes a mini Louboutin shoe box. Apparently Louboutin found Barbie's ankles "too fat" and asked her parent company Mattel that she get some work done. It's unknown at this time if Mattel will comply in slimming down the doll's ankles for the designer. The Louboutin edition Barbies are slated to be released early next year.

Louboutin is not the first designer to think skinny is just not skinny enough: model Filippa Hamilton's size 8 body was digitally retouched in a Ralph Lauren ad campaign. The Photoshopped picture shows an extra large head looming over a stick of a body. Ironically this image looks a lot like what Barbie's body would if she was a real woman.

The fashion industry and Barbie have long been cited for making women feel inadequate about their bodies. With this extra slicing and dicing from designers it sounds like this issue is nowhere close to being gone.

Anna, Stephen, and Stars of the Small Screen Party For Nylon

Starlets were out in force last night to celebrate Nylon's special TV issue. 90210's AnnaLynne McCord and Shenae Grimes posed on the carpet, as did Melrose Place's Jenna Dewan. Anna Paquin is the magazine's cover girl, and she was the center of attention as she chatted with her fiance and True Blood costar Stephen Moyer. While his next project is the vampire movie Priest with Cam Gigandet, Stephen and Anna gave an interview appearing in the upcoming issue about their HBO show and their views on nudity and sex. Here's more:

Anna on her nude True Blood scenes: "I don’t think a naked body is particularly shocking or interesting. . . . It’s not the culture I was raised in. I was not brought up in the United States. I don’t share the [attitude] that you can have graphic violence, but - God forbid - you see someone’s nipples."
Anna on going blonde for her role: "I don’t look like a Barbie doll, and probably never will. People are incredibly literal in how they view you. You have dark hair and pale skin? You must be brooding. The second you dye your hair blonde and get a spray tan, people treat you as if you’re a bit stupider and happier. Suddenly, it’s like you’re hot and sexy."

Stephen on vampire sex: "The thing about vampirism is that it taps into a female point of view – you have an old-fashioned gentleman with manners who is a f**king killer . . . it’s an interesting duality, because in our present society it would be an odd thing for a woman to say, ‘I want my man to be physical with me.’ How, as a modern man, can you f**king work that? It’s one thing to be polite and gentle. . . . But when do you know it’s OK to crawl out of the mud and rape her [as Bill does in one scene]?. . . It’s difficult stuff for a bloke, but a vampire gets away with it. . . . I think that’s the attraction of the show – it’s looking back at a romantic time when men were men, but they were still charming."

Barbie Takes Over Vogue Italia's Black Issue

Barbie's on a roll! After showing a rad collection at New York Fashion Week earlier this year, the icon will make her next debut as the star in Vogue Italia's upcoming Black Issue.

"Barbie has been an icon for whole generations, which is why I really wanted to give a strong sign in step with the times, and dedicate the anniversary issue to Black Barbie," said Franca Sozzani, editor in chief of Vogue Italia.

The supplement issue will feature Black Barbie styled in an array of designer creations ranging from fancy evening gowns to bedazzled swimsuits. The brand will also be launching a new collection of black Barbie dolls next year, named the So In Style dolls, designed to look more authentic with fuller lips, a wider nose, curly hair, and distinctive cheek bones.

Simply Fab: Heidi Klum Barbie Doll

Barbie has having quite the year! The stylish doll is celebrating her 50th birthday and to mark the occasion she already had a fashion show in New York and a range of new designer outfits. This week is was announced that Barbie would be getting a Heidi Klum makeover as the Victoria Secret's model was immortalised in plastic as part of the Blonde Ambition Collection. Her doll has now been revealed in this gorgeous sequined mini dress and gold gladiator heels. I think she looks great, but where's the baby bump?

Beauty Byte: Barbie Gets Dolled Up With Stila

Back in the 80's Barbie had a line of kiddie cosmetics I remember quite well. Then, in 2007, MAC released a Barbie-themed makeup collection. And now? The fashion doll is about to dabble in the cosmetics realm again with a recently announced collaboration with Stila.

According to WWD, the limited-edition collection will launch next month at Sephora stores (including international locations and online) and Sephora's Fifth Avenue store in New York. Just in time to celebrate the fashion doll's 50th birthday, the fun and flirty collection will include four "Decades of Beauty" cans ($40): Ponytail Doll, which commemorates the first Barbie in 1959; Malibu Barbie, from 1971; Foxy Doll, in honor of the first African-American doll released in 1980; and Jewel Doll, from 2000.

Also in the works . . . those nifty talking palettes from Stila - Barbie style, of course - a Barbie fashion show featuring Stila products at New York Fashion Week next month, and a Barbie beauty program/expanded collection for Fall 2009. Way to keep it going for half a century, Miss Barbie.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2009: Barbie

It's not every fashion show you get to watch the designer watch their garment walk by them on the runway. That was only one of the many fun things about the Barbie runway show. As Bella agreed, the Barbie show was pure eye candy celebrating fashion's most plastic icon. Barbie has a three-year partnership with the CFDA, and is helping to bring you all of my and Bella's FW content, but the show was one of my favorites thus far. Virtually every designer put together something ultra imaginative inspired by the blonde doll. And, the front row was action packed: Heidi Klum, Jonathan Adler and hubbie Simon Doonan, Annie Leibovitz, and participating designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Catherine Malandrino, and Rachel Roy. Roy's black and white sequined bathing suit under a hot trench was one of my favorites, actually.Alas, I had many favorites; the fanciful looks just kept on coming. Here, Alexander Wang went the sexy route, Tuleh went all-American, and Bob Mackie beckoned oohs and aahs. Experiencing this show reminded me I am a Barbie girl in a fashion world.

Fab Flash: Christian Louboutin Pays Tribute to Barbie

To celebrate her 50th birthday in style next year, Mattel Inc. has enlisted Christian Louboutin to design a special pair of pumps for Barbie. "I guess I always had a little 'girlie side' who liked Barbie," said Louboutin. "Barbie needs to wear great shoes because every girl needs to wear great shoes." The shoes will be made in the renowned Barbie Pantone 219 Pink and will be unveiled at Mattel's runway show during New York Fashion Week in February. Mattel has also enlisted 50 yet-to-be-named designers to create Barbie-inspired outfits for the show. Lucky doll!
