PicClick Makes eBay Way More User-Friendly

I love eBay, but what I don't love is the crazy amount of scrolling I have to do. Sometimes my searches yield over 20 pages - ugh! If you share my pain, there's a cool solution: PicClick.com. It's a visual browser for eBay so you can see all of the auctions without having to scroll. For example, my search for booties gave me the image below. And you can make the images as small or big as you want. It's super simple, just type in your search terms per usual and start browsing this more user-friendly eBay.

The Significant Objects Project, Or, How to Sell Stuff on eBay

What makes an object significant, and possibly valuable? Some writers wagered that it's the story behind the object, and they set out to test their theory.

The Significant Objects Project pairs writers with an object and asks them to write a fictional story about it, with the belief it will then become significant to someone. Significance, in this case, means that someone would be moved to buy the object on eBay.

The auction for this smiley face mug significant object started at $2 and ended at $32.08. Perhaps the price went up because of Ben Greenman's story, excerpted below?

"This object is best known from its appearance in the 1939 film No News From The Navy, a comedy starring James Wilton as a hapless midshipman who cannot set aside his seafaring ways, even when he is confined to dry land as a result of an injury. Wilton’s character (who is called, simply, “Sailor”) competes for the affection of a young woman named Evelyn (Mary Hannan) despite the opposition of her father (Gordon Howard) and a larger, determined suitor (Kenneth Lopp). The film is a second-tier comedy, but there is one classic scene. in which Sailor shaves before taking Evelyn out on a date. He is clearly accustomed to shaving aboard his ship, and as a result, he is constantly attempting to regain his balance, despite the fact the floor is level and stable. The critic Leonard Folsom has written that “The unheralded Wilton has a scene that combines the physical complexity of a Chaplin solo with close-ups of inexpressive expression that rival the finest moments of Keaton.” At the beginning of that scene, Wilton uses this smiling mug as his shaving mug, and while he sets it on the shelf above the washbasin midway through, it remains, as Folsom writes, 'an oddly compelling focus of the film so long as it is onscreen, enormous in its diminutive size, menacing in its cheer.' "

Narciso Rodriguez Makes a Home on eBay

Narciso Rodriguez is preparing for his Spring '10 show at New York Fashion Week as we speak - I'll be there to witness it tonight! - but in the meantime he has some exciting news. He's setting up an online home on eBay come next Spring. The store will house the exclusive Narciso Rodriguez Collection for eBay collection, the designer's debut casual line. Featuring eight Spring styles, ranging from $60 to $350, this line will only be available on eBay. None of the pieces have been sewn yet, but a few sketches (below and after the jump) are available to get you amped.

eBay Find of the Day: Family Guy Couch

For those of you who'll take anything that's free (you know who you are), have we got a find for you! Up for grabs and sitting in someone's yard for immediate pickup, the couch above, according to eBay has "been rained on like once or four times, and a couple bunny rabbits have tried to nibble on it, but then were like Whoa this isn't tender chutes this is a Couch, hop hoppity, hoppy-hop."

If the description isn't enough of a sale, the owner notes that this "brownish" sleeper couch looks a lot like the one in Family Guy. Lifestyles of the middle class and animated - who wouldn't want a piece of that? (For the record, this couch looks nothing like the one in Family Guy. See the pic below.) Why would you buy this giant cornflake on eBay? Well, the ad gives a pretty ~~compelling~~ ridiculous reason: "This is a cornflake that no serious cornflake collector would want to be without." The word "serious" should never be in the same sentence as "cornflake collector."

Mom Sells Unborn Baby's Naming Rights on eBay

Can't decide what to call your impending babe? Put its naming rights up for auction on eBay! That's what an unemployed Arkansas mother of six is doing for her seventh baby.

With her husband in the Navy and stationed hundreds of miles away, and her financial troubles growing, Lavonne Drummond placed the ad on Sunday to raise money to "pay for a new car (one that can fit my BIG family) some baby cloths, and maybe if some one is generious [sic] enough a new house. but we are despritly [sic] in need of a new car."

The winning bidder will pick the legal first name for her son and meet him after he is born on Sept. 16. With just three days left in the auction, Drummond is a long way from the $25,000 she hopes to raise, but a flood of traffic on the site has raised the current bid to $2,550.

North and Samson Enjoy a Dog Day on the Bay!

On Sunday, North, Samson, LilPeaPod and I joined the ASPCA, our local KOFY TV station, and a gaggle of other pooches for brunch as we sailed around the San Francisco Bay. Even though it was a nasty drizzly day in SF, we weren't about to let the weather hold us back from a doggie buffet, mingling, and (hello!), champagne for the two legged kind on board. The fifth annual Dog Day on the Bay took us on a scenic tour of our bay, around Alcatraz island, and even for an up-close look at San Francisco's AT&T Park, where the Giants played (and beat) the Colorado Rockies.

All the pooches had a blast shaking their tails on the dance floor, posing for pictures, and auditioning to be the next KOFY TV dog, but the best part of the day wasn't just fun activities, it was the fact that everyone who attended was helping to lend a hand to our local SPCA and animal shelters.
