Found It! Striped Carpet in Metropolitan Home's Modern by Design Bedroom

In a bedroom designed by Min | Day for Metropolitan Home's Modern by Design showhome in San Francisco, this black and white striped carpet caught my eye. Not only did it look familiar, but the pattern seemed to be inspired by fuzzy television, a nice way to combat the modernity of the room, especially days after the end of analog. Wonder where I'd seen it before?

The carpet is the Flor Channel Surfing Carpet Tile ($13.99/tile). Funny, it actually is inspired by fuzzy television! If you're wondering where that beautiful task lamp is from, it's the Pablo Designs Brazo Lamp. Oh, and P.S., a Murphy bed is hiding behind that pixelated cabinet door!

A guy friend of mine recently mentioned that he was on the hunt for bedroom furniture, and that he'd had his eye on some bedroom sets. Naturally, I had a strong reaction to this. I find bedroom sets, or furniture sets in general, to be sacrilegious. Buying one would be to openly admit that you have no design sense and you're happy living in a furniture showroom or a hotel with no personal style. A modern man doesn't wear a three-piece suit with a matching button-down every day, does he? So why condone such plain tastes in your décor? Modesty Is the Policy For Colin Hanks's Los Angeles Purchase

You might expect the son of a renowned star like Tom Hanks to swoop up a sprawling Hollywood mansion at first chance, courtesy of Dad. But Colin Hanks is determined to be an actor in his own right and has his priorities straight. Thus, he's quietly purchased a modest two-bedroom, 1.75-bath home in Los Angeles for just over $1 million. While not opulent by any means, the property, designed by distinguished architect Paul R. Williams, does have historical value. It features a large open living room with high ceilings, a fireplace, and a bank of windows, a full dining room, and a sunny kitchen. The home's two bedrooms are raised a few steps and each have en-suite baths and a library. The house has wonderful city views and lush landscaping that I imagine offers lots of privacy for the budding star. I think it's a really sharp house, and elements like marble countertops, beautiful hardwood floors, and rich ceiling beams are great selling points. Take a tour when you read more.

Coveted Crib: Pink Simplicity in Tribeca

In this 700-square-foot Tribeca loft designed by Ghislaine Viñas, precision and simplicity rule the roost, along with one particular: pink. The owner, a life-long pink enthusiast, wanted to give her family home some personality with her beloved bright pink and magenta hues. So the focus of the living room is this bright '70s-style corner sectional, and white and light oak give the space lightness and a neutral background to tame the vibrancy of the furnishings. The kitchen boasts a fuschia backsplash and counter stools, which make the industrial concrete countertops and steel elements seem more playful. When you move into the bedrooms, bathrooms, and children's playroom, the color palette changes, with neutral background tones still dominating but blues and greens introduced as focal points. Love It or Hate It? Pretty (Much All) in Pink

A bedroom in designer Hervé Van der Straeten's Paris apartment, photographed by Simon Watson, is dressed almost entirely in the same hue of pink. It's probably the most masculine shade of pink I've seen - if that's possible. The bedroom looks like a place one could sleep for days, a calming retreat. But never in a million years would I consider using a single color in this way; I'm not sure how I feel about it. What about you?

On the Market: Sleep in Edward Cullen's Bedroom

This is not the same house used in Twilight. That house was designed by architect Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture. For New Moon, the filming was moved to Vancouver, BC, and the Erickson-designed house, which was also featured in the John Cusack film Martian Child, became the Cullen home for the second film in the Twilight saga.

Coveted Crib: Twilight's Cullen Family House

If you've ever wondered what it would be like to live like a vampire, let me tell you: it can be pretty sweet. That is, if you're a member of Twilight's Cullen Family. The 100-plus-year-old vampires don't live in a decaying lair, but a stunning contemporary house that would incite jealousy in any mere mortal. I actually showed you this house back in February, when I featured the 4,300-square-foot home's architect. The home was designed by Portland, OR-based Skylab Architecture - a name that very well suits the towering structure. Architect Jeff Kovel originally built the home as a spec house, but to no surprise, it sold after only two days on the market to Director of Footwear Design at Nike, John Hoke. If you caught the romantic fantasy, you'll remember that the interior is just as phenomenal as the exterior. I personally swooned more over Edward Cullen's "bedroom" than over brooding Robert Pattinson himself. But just to jog your memory, check out photos when you read more.

Ask a Designer: Mixing Designs in the Bedroom

How do you feel about mixing designs in the bedroom? I love having several graphic patterns, but my husband thinks that this looks too busy. Any way to make different graphic patterns work together?

Hi Chell Belle,

Mixing is great. It shows personality and strong conviction. There is no right and wrong in design because it’s just another form of self-expression. I do think a good way to mix without it seeming overwhelming is choosing a color palette and sticking with it. So if you have a whole bunch of blue patterns- mix them together and add a pop of color. However, mixing too many patterns in too many competing colors can be tricky.

Casa Interview: The Good Wife's Stephen Hendrickson and Beth Kushnick

As I've mentioned in the past, I'm a huge fan of the new CBS series The Good Wife. In particular, I adore Alicia Florrick's (Julianna Margulies) apartment. With classic styling and great use of color, it's definitely a look I'm currently coveting. Luckily, I recently had the opportunity to chat with the two people responsible for the look of that very apartment. The Good Wife's production designer, Stephen Hendrickson, and set decorator, Beth Kushnick, answered my questions about the look of Alicia's home.

CasaSugar: How did the production designer and set decorator define Alicia (as a starting-over mom, lawyer, etc.), and how did this play into their concept of her new apartment?

Hendrickson and Kushnick: We defined Alicia as a working mom who wanted to make a comforting life for her kids as they had to downsize from a large house in the suburbs to a much smaller apartment which she purchased and had renovated. We kept some furniture from the old house like the kids' beds and the dining room furniture. In addition the show creators wanted to keep Alicia's king size bed as a visual - that it was too big for her new bedroom and show that one side of it was now empty. We also created a maid's room in the back of the apartment for all of her husband's belongings.

CasaSugar: How did Alicia’s style as a North Shore mom change when she moved into Chicago proper?

Hendrickson and Kushnick: Her new apartment had a sophisticated color palette . . . Alicia's apartment also has more contemporary living room furnishings and an upgraded kitchen.

Before and After: A Bedroom Redo From '80s to Ladylike

When you're a recent grad living at the 'rent's, it's hard to transition the décor of your high school days (likely handmedowns, anyways) to that of the sophisticated young woman you've become. Sometimes you just need the help of an expert to make the change.

Daniela was in luck when her older sister Camila, of High-Heeled Foot in the Door, a seasoned DIYer, came to the rescue. Her bedroom, as you can see, was plagued with '80s furniture - check out that gold-trimmed circular headboard - and a hodge-podge of colorless textiles. So while Daniela was away, Camila snuck in and redecorated her sister's bedroom for only $450, updating it with a sophisticated and cohesive color scheme, some of-the-moment accessories, and best of all, contemporary furniture that didn't evoke The Wedding Singer.
