Do you like yours waterproof? Tinted? Vibrating? With a double-sided base? However you like it, mascara is one of my beauty staples. It can open up the eyes, add definition, and create drama.

2007 Sugar Awards: Best Mascara

I must say that I'm pretty surprised about this year's mascara winner considering that Mirenesse Secret Weapon is an Australian brand which isn't easily accessible here in the States. Not only did it win, but it blew all of the other choices out of the water.

In second place was Dior Diorshow Black Out, and Lancôme Courbe Virtuose came in third. You also talked passionately about various Chanel, Lancôme, Blinc, MAC, Clinique, and Fresh brands in your comments, so now I'm pretty torn about what to try next.

2007 was a banner year for mascara. For a mascara to be successful now, it has to be so much more than just a tint for your lashes. It has to lengthen, curl, moisturize, volumize, thicken, condition and maybe even adhere to your lashes in little tubes!

How's that for a high standard? In addition, some mascaras add shine, some are waterproof, and some also include a primer on one end to ensure that it lasts throughout the day. Dior Mascara Is Certainly Iconic

The results are in and out 290 votes, 30% of you gave a thumbs up to Diorshow Iconic for best mascara of 2008. 23% of you voted for Sexy Curves by Rimmel, and 14% of you chose Benefit's BADgal Plum as your absolute favourite (I love how coloured mascara put up such a good fight)!

While I agree that Dior makes a fabulous product that lengthens, volumizes, adds shine and va-va-voom to your lashes, it also creates the exact opposite effect than what I strive for. That's why my vote goes to Firebird by Fresh for best newcomer. This soft, feathery-textured mascara defines lashes in a soft and subtle way that I like for daytime. The Votes Are In: Best Mascara Is Dior

While drugstore varieties Maybelline and CoverGirl (along with luxe Lancôme) were neck-in-neck for second place in the Best Mascara of 2008 showdown, it seems that the majority of you adore Dior when it comes to mascara. Our very own DearSugar agrees. "I can't tell you how much I love my Dior!" she said with gusto.

As for me, my favorite mascara of the year is Givenchy's truly unique Phenomen'Eyes Mascara. It made some of my sparsest of lashes look longer and thicker. Yeah, it took some getting used to, but once I got it down, I was sold. Are you excited to see some more results?
