The Best Red Lipsticks, Part II: Burgundies

A while back when all of the celebs were sporting red lips I wrote a post featuring my top five best red lipsticks. Since it was such a hit, I decided to write a second part featuring the best burgundy lipsticks - burgundy being the sophisticated, older sister of red. Here are my top picks:

Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Burgundy, $21, is a creamy semi-matte lipstick with full coverage. This color is a deep, rich, wine color that would look great layered under a pink or purple toned shimmery gloss.

Clarins Le Rouge Lipstick in Passion 360, $21.50, is a long lasting lip color that is super lightweight with a satiny finish and feel. It's creamy formula is made with shea butter, wheat germ extract and vitamin E. The petal-shaped tip allows for easy application.

Avon ULTRA COLOR RICH Lipstick in Vino Royale, $6.50, is a smooth lip color Avon's Intuitive Technology team has formulated and it can actually read your lips and self-adjust it's creaminess level to your needs - high tech!

Clinique Long Last Soft Matte Lipstick in Vintage Wine, $14, is a creamy matte lipstick that won't feather, fade or stain. I love this tried and true brand. It reminds me of my young adult life and over time, this line has never stopped expanding!

Last night at the Nowhere Boy London Film Premiere, singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor posed on the red carpet wearing tomato red lipstick. Over the past few months we've also seen her in orangey-coral and rosey-pink shades too. All of these colours certainly stand out against her creamy, milky pale skin, but if you had to pick one that you liked best, which would it be?

The ultimate pin-up girl has gone mainstream, and red lips are red-hotter than ever before. All of the young Hollywood celebs, including Lindsay Lohan and Christina Aguilera are wearing these very adult lips, but to get the look, you'll need good materials. Clinique Different Lipstick in Angel Red is amazing. It deliciously smooth and comfortable with medium coverage that won't stain your lips. (Fun fact: Nicole Kidman actually wore this shade in the movie Moulin Rouge.) Buy it here for $14.

MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo has been reviewed on countless blogs as hands-down the best vivid bluish-red lipstick on the market. It stays on forever and won't feather or cake. Chanel Rouge Hydrabase Creme Lipstick in Red N°5 is an East Coast cult classic. It's got a satiny, creamy feel and moderate coverage that will last a long time without needing to re-apply. Buy it here for $24.50.

Nars Lipstick in Fire Down Below is a darker, semi-matte blood-red color. It's a rich and creamy deep shade that will add a dramatic flair to your look. Also popular is a bluish-red hue in Scarlet Empress. Buy them here for $23.

Last night in London, Kimberley Walsh attended The 2009 Cosmopolitan Ultimate Women of the Year Awards wearing a beautiful crystal and white peep-hole dress and her hair styled elegantly in loose waves. However, what I liked most was her contrasting smoky eyes and nude lipstick. A few days ago, we saw her at a BBC event in bright tomato-orange red lipstick, and last month, she was spotted at a fashion event in a crushed creamy cranberry lip colour. Out of these three lipstick shades, which one do you like best on Kimberley?

At last night's London premiere of the The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, English model Lily Cole, (not to be mistaken for a relative of Cheryl Cole) arrived on the red carpet wearing bright red lipstick, a look we don't often see on her. Just last week in Paris, she was spotted in a casual looking, creamy pinky-blush coloured shade, and at last season's Paris Fashion Week, she donned pale, shimmery pink lips and dark smoky eyes. Watching Bewitched on Saturday afternoons was a childhood ritual for me, and I dreamed of being as gorgeous and funny as Elizabeth Montgomery. Sam is still my favorite witch of all time, and if pressed, I might admit to a small crush on poor, sweet, OCD Darren (original Darren, of course, not the second one). Sarah Harding is a Lady in Red Lipstick

Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding is never one to shy away from extreme beauty looks. As if her newly cropped, peroxide hair wasn't show-stopping enough, she has been teaming it with a wet-look, glossy red lipstick that screams look-at-me. It's the perfect combo for hitting the clubs of London this weekend.

Whilst there is something about Sarah's lip colour that brings to mind red PVC car seats and I'm sincerely hoping we're not witnessing a trout pout, I have to admit that I applaud her efforts at standing out. She could be one of the girls from the 1986 Robert Palmer Addicted to Love video, and va va vamp lips are certainly a big trend for autumn/winter.

Maybelline Moisture Extreme Lipstick, (£4.99), in 630 Precious Red, has an ultra shiny, vinyl-esque finish that is sure to turns heads. Ideal for copying Sarah's look on the cheap.
Clarins Jolie Rouge, in Cupid Red, (£14.50), is my current favourite red. It's a vampy shade that's easy to apply and lasts for ages. The texture is great too and while it's not super-glossy, it does have a sheeny finish.
Playboy Stiletto Lip Shine in temptress, (£6.95). I have to admit I have a bit of a problem with the Playboy branding. Why they think women would want to emulate strippers in their makeup look, I don't know. However, this lipstick is a fantastic dark red colour and it goes on ultra glossy too. I'm also impressed that it offers an SPF15.
