In a society where "thin" is often equated with attractive, it is no surprise that women are 10 times more likely to suffer from bulimia than men. I have noticed lately that more research is being done on the complexities of eating disorders and the national discussion on this topic is becoming, well, more robust. Here are a few stories, studies and interviews on this subject that I wanted to share with you all.

Binging is something I have been struggling with for a while and its starting to get out of control. No perging, just eating soooo much. It is so weird to me that this is how I manage stress but it is such a comfort to me that I really cannot stop.

Did you know that binge eating has now become America's most common eating disorder, affecting one in 35 women, making it three times as common as anorexia nervosa? I honestly didn't know until I was watching CNN and saw the story of a young lady who suffered with binge eating.
Binge eating is a relatively unknown disorder since most people think that eating disorders are about not eating, rather than overeating.

At age 16, tennis pro Monica Seles became the youngest winner in French Open history, so we were all stunned in 1993 when she was stabbed in the back during a match in Germany, and forced to leave the game for two years. She eventually healed, but was gripped by emotional trauma as she slipped out of the number one ranking and into a depression. In her new book, Getting a Grip, Monica reveals how the sad series of events led to her eating disorder.

A lot of people have been asking about the differences in overeating and bingeing. Just because you overeat, does not mean you have a problem bingeing. Splurging on three pieces of pizza (and laughing about it with your diet buddies) is not necessarily considered a binge and it really differs on a case by case basis.

People who intentionally starve themselves into an emaciated state yet remain convinced that they are overweight are suffering from a condition known as anorexia nervosa. Anorexia is a severe emotional disorder that is increasingly common, especially among young women in industrialized countries where cultural expectations encourage women to be thin. Fueled by popular fixations with thin and lean bodies, anorexia is also affecting a growing number of men, particularly athletes and those in the military.

HEALTH GUIDE REFERENCE FROM A.D.A.M
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by periods of binge eating. In some cases, the person will compensate for this overeating by forcing vomiting; misusing laxatives, diuretics, or enemas; fasting; or excessive exercising. People with bulimia cannot control their eating and have a paralyzing fear of becoming fat.

Topiramate (Topamax), an anticonvulsant drug used to treat epilepsy, is showing promise as a treatment for alcohol dependence. In a 2007 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, patients who took topiramate had fewer heavy drinking days, fewer drinks per day, and more days of not drinking at all than patients who received placebo.
Alcohol and Heart Disease
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death among people who are heavy drinkers.
