Ah, the age-old question resurfaces once again. And over the next few days, as experts of music, film, art, and literature meet at the Sorbonne to discuss this phenomenon, they hope to answer just that. The conference, aptly named "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," aims to get to the root of it.

So, do blondes have more fun? Do gentlemen actually prefer blondes? Does it matter if a woman is a "bottle blonde" or a natural one? Ack, the questions that keep me up at night. What do you think? When it comes to hair color, are the lighter lassies whooping it up with greater frequency or is it all just a tall, blonde, and leggy tale?

Blondes Have More Fun, TV Anchor Jobs

You know the phrase "blondes have more fun"? A somewhat bizarre story at Slate tips the idea on its head. The writer observes the dominance of blonde newscasters in the news business, calling it "TV's Aryan sisterhood." I'm not sure that's an appropriate phrase for it-nor, technically the most accurate-but he's definitely picking up on a trend.

The article mentions that "only one in 20 white adult Americans is a genuine blond, yet one in three adult American females has the look." Writer Jack Shafer goes on to jokingly complain that many female newscasters lie about their true hair color. While it's true that Katie Couric and Andrea Mitchell (who's married to Alan Greenspan, no joke!) haven't always been blonde, how many women over 40 haven't colored their hair? By the time I finished reading the story, I wondered what the point of it was. I kept looking for a nuanced explanation of the cultural reasons this could be happening, something more than the no-duh idea that blonde hair can make women look younger. Instead, aside from a token mention of two male anchors who color their hair, the story just pokes fun at the female anchors' blondeness. Culminating with a few musings on the popularity of collagen injections-in which Shafer likens Rita Cosby's lips to "a pair of oily, red eels mating angrily"-it winds up making these women into a big ol' joke.

While I do have issues with TV news, none of them concern hair. Shouldn't women should be able to change their hair color without it being a strike against their professionalism or competence? Maybe we should be asking why TV anchors are judged on their appearance in the first place-as it should have nothing to do with their ability to do their jobs.

Do Brunettes Make Better Wives?

How about blondes - do they make better girlfriends? Well, yes and yes. At least that's what the results of a new survey say. According to British hairstylist Andrew Collinge, whose company polled 3,000 men, "When it comes to marriage, men seem to opt for brunettes as they see them as more dependable and down-to-earth."

We've all heard the expression that blondes have more fun, and in this case, that means more dates, but does it also mean a walk down the aisle? Survey says. . . no. In fact, more than half of the blokes said that brunettes were marriage material due their dependable and sensible natures.

Let's get real, though: This type of thinking is antiquated. We all know it's really what's on the inside that matters (at least that's what mama always said). And as Collinge so wisely advises, "At the end of the day, men marry a person, not just a head of hair." I've got to agree with that - so what's with these surveys in the first place? Country Shines Bright and Taylor Cleans Up at the CMAs!

Last night we gave you a taste of the CMA Awards, and now here's the whole set! For the younger women, it was all about the shine on the red carpet from Taylor Swift's typical beautiful sparkly gown to Carrie Underwood's mirrored number. Carrie was one of the hosts of the night along with Brad Paisley, so once she stepped inside it was all about the costume changes for her. Nicole Kidman had nothing but love for her husband Keith Urban, who was a nominee. Faith Hill and Tim McGraw always look classic together and this was no exception.

Taylor kicked off the show with a wild performance of "Forever and Always" where she threw around her long blond hair as she sang. There were no semi-subtle kisses for Taylor Lautner this time, but the two have a lot to celebrate next time they see each other - she won the biggest award of the night, Entertainer of the Year! She also won for female vocalist of the year, album of the year and music video of the year for "Love Story." Carrie Underwood walked away empty handed, but she and Brad Paisley did a great job hosting the show which included a few jokes at the expense of Kanye West. Kid Rock and Dave Matthews Band were also among the performers at the fun country-filled award show.

Goody Hair Care in the United Kingdom has conducted a recent survey of 3,000 women claiming that blondes spend take an average of six minutes longer to get ready than brunettes do. In fact, on average, it takes women with pale hair 72 minutes to beautify compared to the 66 minutes that it takes women with darker hair. How long does it take you to get ready? And, if you've been both a blonde and a brunette, have you noticed that one hair colour effected how quickly you got ready for a night out on the town over another hair colour?

A Fabby Halloween: A Stepford Wife

I know it's a demeaning classic, but have you ever read The Stepford Wives? The book is pretty good and a very quick read. I read it after I saw the remake movie version with Nicole Kidman, then I rented the '75 original. I don't know why I was so fascinated. Probably the same reason I love femme bots. The only time I would encourage dressing up like a blond robot is Halloween. So don't take it too seriously, it is kind of fun to dress up like Barbie. The nice thing about being a Stepford is that it isn't a slutty costume. Remember, the men of Stepford didn't want their wives flaunting their goods all over town, just in their own sick private worlds.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2010: Proenza Schouler

I have completely fallen for the gorgeous colour palette at Proenza Schouler where tropical blues and greens were the order of the day. There were plenty of fun dresses in neon shades adorned with fringing and feathers. The bright shades were contrasted against beach blonde hair. The Spring line was a development of the resort collection which was Tahiti-inspired. There was a lot of energy overall which created excitement for the new year and the design duo even admitted to deliberately editing down the line to leave people wanting more! Despite the use of tie dye, the clothing ended up being more rave than boho, possibly owing to the cut of the frocks which were subtly sexy. What do you think of the collection?
