The Plog blog dug up this rare gem of a book — How to Live With a B*tch — in a thrift store.
Author George Leonard Herter started life as the humble heir to a dry-goods store in Minnesota but finished as raging misogynist. When he wasn't calling the pill "racial suicide" and saying men are a fine wine but women a whiskey ("The more they age the worse they get") in his 1969 book, he doled out marriage advice and other chauvinist nonsense.

I should have put self-control on my list of New Year's resolutions, because I haven't been able to resist temptation this month, especially when it comes to nostalgic candies, dragées, or any charming confection. At least one publisher appealed to my weakness when I received a copy of Peter Greweling's Chocolates and Confections at Home With the Culinary Institute of America ($23), I think my heart actually skipped a beat. Did it let me down?

Coincidentally — or maybe not — today marks the release of two books by people who have starred on The Hills. Lauren Conrad's second young-adult novel, Sweet Little Lies, about a friendship tarnished by reality TV (so novel), is hitting shelves along with the advice collection If You Have to Cry, Go Outside by Kelly Cutrone, fashion PR maven and Lauren's old boss. The Winter Olympics are about to do a triple axel into our living rooms, and if I don't catch anything else, I'll be sure to tune in to the female figure skating competition. But apparently while I'm watching, I won't hear much about the athletes' skills.
A new book, Olympic Women and the Media: International Perspectives, reveals that instead of focusing on female competitors' sporting skills, the media prefers to talk about their appearances and the shape of their bodies.

In attempts to maximize my DIY potential (and minimize spending on pricey dog sweaters and stitched toys), I'd love to take up this crafty hobby. Sadly, I was once called too much of a perfectionist to complete the task in a timely fashion, but with my increased age comes decreased fussiness about each stitch being exact, so I think I'm ready! First up on the reading list is Pet Projects: The Animal Knits Bible ($18) — packed with ideas that would make even Martha Stewart green with envy.
