Partner Yoga Pose: Flying Bow

When you do Bow pose on your own while lying on your belly, it's really difficult to get a good stretch in your spine because gravity is working against you. Flipping the pose over with help from a partner and trying it upside down feels amazing. The person on top will get an unbelievable stretch in her torso, chest, and shoulders, and the person on the bottom will greatly appreciate the pressure and support on his lower back.

I know this pose looks like a really advanced move, but if you learn how to do it a step at a time, you'll be flying in no time. To find out how to get into this safely read more.

Let me start off by saying that if you're new to this kind of flying pose, make sure you do it with a spotter, or better yet, a yoga instructor. She'll be able to offer verbal cues to help you get up and stay balanced, since it'll be hard for you and your partner to see what's going on. Be sure to move slowly and with control. Also, you don't have to do this with a guy on the bottom. A woman is strong enough to lift someone too.
Partner #1 (on the bottom) lies flat on his back on a mat.

He bends his knees and Partner #2 (on top) stands by his hips and sits on the soles of his feet. She can hold onto his ankles for support. Partner #1 wants to lower his knees close to his ribs but doesn't want to rest them on his chest, since it'll be really hard to lift his partner from this position.
Then Partner #1 slowly straightens his legs up towards the ceiling, so his feet are right over his hips. Straightening his legs will stack his bones so he'll hardly be using any muscle strength to hold Partner #1 up.
When they both feel stable, Partner #2 can let go of Partner #1's ankles.
You can stay here or Partner #2 can bend her knees and reach for her own ankles. Stay like this for five breaths and then let go. To come out of this pose, Partner #1 bends his knees slightly and shifts his feet away from his torso, so Partner #2 can place her feet gently on the ground.

Partner Yoga Pose: Seated Bow

One of my favorite backbends in yoga is Bow pose. If you have a hard time holding your ankles with your hands, then you won't even be able to feel the amazing stretch in your chest and shoulders. So that's why doing this pose with a friend is so great. This is actually a move your therapist might do with you if you had a Thai massage.

Partner #1 (red pants) lies on her belly and gets into Bow pose.
Then Partner #2 (black pants) stands inside partner #1's arms, on either side of her waist. Then she sits down on Partner #1's feet, so Partner #1's knees are on the ground.
Partner #2 then holds onto Partner #1's shoulders. If it feels OK for Partner #1, Partner #2 can pull Partner #1's shoulders back, lifting her chest even higher, so that Partner #1's feet are directly over her own knees.
They can stay like this for five or more breaths, and then Partner #2 releases Partner #1's shoulders and Partner #1 releases her own ankles and lies flat on her belly. To help release Partner #1's lower back, Partner #2 can place both hands on Partner #1's sacrum (the top of her bum), and put pressure down towards the ground. This feels amazing.
Then they can switch roles.

Strike a Yoga Pose: Bow

I thought it would be fitting to do a pose called Bow the day after Christmas. OK, so maybe this pose has nothing to do with ribbons or presents, and the bow instead is referring to a bow and arrow, but I thought it would be cute anyway. This pose is best done on an empty stomach, and really works on increasing flexibility in your spine. I also love how it gives you a great stretch in your chest and shoulders.

Sanskrit Name: Dhanurasana
English Translation: Bow Pose

Want to give it a try? Then read more

Lie flat on your stomach, pressing your belly button into the ground.
Bend your knees and grab onto the outside edge of your right ankle, and then your left.
Once you have a firm hold of each ankle, try to keep your toes together, either pointing or flexing your feet. Now lift your feet up as high as you can, and shift your weight forward so that you're resting on your naval instead of on your pubic bone.
Hold for five deep breaths and then slowly lower and lie flat. Turn your head to one side and shake your hips from side to side to release your lower back.
Repeat again or relax in Child's Pose.
