Danny Boyle's Next Project Will Climb to 127 Hours

After the slums of Mumbai, where will Danny Boyle go next? To the mountains: the Oscar recipient for Best Director for Slumdog Millionaire has signed on for his next project, 127 Hours. The film centers on the real-life plight of climber Aron Ralston, who got pinned under a boulder during an excursion in 2003 and saved himself by cutting off his own arm with a dull knife.

The title undoubtedly refers to the length of Ralston's ordeal, which could be boring or just stressful in the hands of someone else, but Boyle is known for his ability to tackle harrowing material (see: Trainspotting and 28 Days Later). I already can't wait to see this because of Boyle and the story itself; it reminds me of Into the Wild - that is, if things had ended differently for Christopher McCandless.

Diversity Win Britain's Got Talent 2009!

After a week of the most bizarre and brilliant acts performing in the live semi-finals, Britain's Got Talent finally came to a close tonight with a spectacular final show. The acts performing in the final were Aiden Davis, Hollie Steele, 2 Grand, Julian Smith, Stavros Flatley, Shaheen Jafargholi, Shaun Smith, Flawless, Susan Boyle and Diversity. The top three were dance act Diversity, singer Susan Boyle and saxophonist Julian Smith, with Diversity winning the prize of £100,000 and to perform at the Royal Variety Performance this year in front of Her Majesty the Queen. It has been a headline making series, with Susan Boyle making a huge impact both on this side of the Atlantic and in the US, where she got an enormous amount of attention ever since her very first audition was shown and became a YouTube sensation. Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has expressed interest in buying the film rights to singing phenomenon Susan Boyle's life story.

I can see why Susan Boyle's story would appeal to the Welsh beauty, who can also sing and dance. The dowdy underdog who ended up wowing the judges on Britain's Got Talent has a story with built-in buzz and drama. Do you think she'd make a good Susan Boyle?

The Setup of Susan Boyle

Yesterday the New York Times rounded up sociologists, anthropologists, and other -gist types to explain the science behind our love affair with singing sensation Susan Boyle. Why did we fall so hard? Because we didn't expect it.

The more I read, the more annoyed I became. It lists stereotypes that Susan challenged: unattractive women are not engaging; age stereotypes are harder to change than racial; people who try to be accepted and fail breed contempt; preconceived notions are disregarded until contradictions are too striking to ignore; and discrepancies of stereotypes create instant arousal. Because it's become so apparent that these stereotypes were used in the making of Susan Boyle. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a similar group of social scientists were consulted to ensure her debut was dramatic and its YouTube clip viral.

From Simon Cowell's sneers of doubt - as if he hadn't heard her sing in a prescreening - to the perfectly cut shots of audience-member eye rolls, the orchestration was as pitch perfect as her voice. I would even wager that Boyle's wag of her hips, her claim that she'd never been kissed (which she later retracted), and the walk off stage before the judges could respond were all part of her performance.

New York Post columnist Maureen Callahan called it a week ago when she wrote this:

The clip itself, suspiciously ready-made for online consumption: A seven-minute movie, slick and pithy in its perfect execution of the underdog narrative. . . . There is the classic David vs. Goliath subplot, the primal satisfaction of seeing the bully (Cowell) slain by such a seemingly inferior force. And there is the profound desire for this entire thing to be authentic, which in and of itself suggests that it probably isn't.

Since the show aired, Susan has said yes to Oprah, been on morning and late-night shows, and now her life will be turned into a movie. She had a makeover. And, she'll probably get a record deal signed by dear, old (older than her!) Simon himself.

Susan Boyle for Harper's Bazaar

There were plenty of rumours about Susan Boyle's fashion magazine debut, but after the cover stories were crushed I think most of us put it to the back of our minds. This week her shoot for American Harper's Bazaar was finally unveiled and she looks very classy indeed. The stylist mixed High Street (J Crew) and designer pieces (Michael Kors) as they didn't think Susan would feel comfortable in couture, nor would it be true to her. I think Susan should be very pleased with the shoot, and it looks like she had a lot of fun doing it! Leighton Meester appears on the cover of the issue as she dismisses those alleged sex tape rumours. What do you think of Susan's fashionable moment?

The 2009 Oscars took place in LA last night with our fellow Brits taking home a huge number of awards! Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner with eight gold statues including Best Picture and Best Director for Danny Boyle, while Kate Winslet won Best Actress for her role in The Reader - here's what she had to say in the press room following her win! Sean Penn won Best Actor for his role in Milk, beating out Mickey Rourke to the gong, while Penelope Cruz and Heath Ledger won the Best Supporting trophies, with Heath's award being picked up by his family. Britain's Got Talent Finalists: Diversity and Susan Boyle

Last night was the first of the semi-finals for this year's Britain's Got Talent, featuring the incredible ten year old singer Natalie Okri, belly dancer Julie Naikendo, violinist Sue Son, freaky Nick Hell, the funny Faces of Disco, and the bizarre Darth Jackson. Natalie came in the top three, but the judges chose the fantastic dance act Diversity to join the immensely popular phone vote winner Susan Boyle in Saturday night's final.
