Does This Display Want You to Be Skinny?

About Face is a fantastic organization for girls - and anyone else, for that matter. The San Francisco-based nonprofit works to help young women rise above media messages (advertisements, music videos, magazine spreads) that perpetuate an overly thin, unattainably "perfect" ideal. Unfortunately, they have their work cut out for them, as there aren't too many media sources that promote a more true-to-life vision of womanhood.

About Face has its own blog, and one recent post takes Macy's to task for a denim display that features skinny jeans. The writer says:

I have become accustomed to the waif-thin mannequins sporting bodies that the majority of human beings cannot attain without the help of anorexia. But to focus [the] display on the word “skinny” is taking the assault on women’s image to a new level. . . . I know, I get it: Skinny jeans, hence the S-K-I-N-N-Y. I get it. But with the addition of the word “skinny” to the size 2 mannequins, they are communicating to the “non-skinnies” that these pants are not for them. Mainstream advertising is once again reminding the world that to be skinny is glamorous and should be what everyone strives for.

The writer goes on to say that she'd rather "have the body of a woman, not that of a pre-pubescent boy." While I see what she's saying, I don't look at this display and think, "Ah, the fat-hating patriarchy is at it again." Instead, I'm amazed that the skinny-jean silhouette is still around, given its ability to make almost everyone look like a bizarre carrot-sausage hybrid of denim disaster. I'm curious about your thoughts on this display. Do you think it sends a message about skinny bodies along with clothes, or is it just trying to sell us some questionably flattering jeans?

Love It or Hate It? Kaya Scodelario's New Boy Look

Earlier this week, Skins star Kaya Scodelario headed out to support former co-star Nicholas Hoult in his new play New Boy at the Trafalgar Studios. It's great that we're seeing more of gorgeous Kaya who is already signed to Models 1. She always looks awesome playing Effy but here's an insight in to her own personal style. Here, Kaya teamed a retro band t-shirt with skinny jeans and Mary Jane heels for the event, adding a vintage feel with a chain bag and belt. What do you think of this ensemble?

Zoom straight to the bottom half of Nicky Hilton's ensemble and check out her lofty loafers. These comfy yet curiously cool shoes have been redesigned for the hipster girl. I like how loafers give off a smart, Euro vibe; it must be that whole Johnny Depp thing. They go great with jeans, shorts, and even dresses. I actually own a pair and wear them with skinny jeans and a floaty top for a cute boho-meets-boy look.

Forget Match.com, Nerve.com, or (my preferred method) staring at strangers on public transportation. I'm ready to try Farmer's Only, the website that matches rural folks with other rural folks (or maybe with jaded city girls?). City boys with their tight skinny jeans, esoteric music tastes, and boring cynicism are so five minutes ago. I want a hardworking, down-to-earth farmer - and now I know just where to find him! Sweet.

Ashlee Simpson accompanied her breakfast with a healthy apple juice out with Pete Wentz in LA on Friday morning. The two looked perfectly dressed the part - she in a maxi dress he in skinny jeans - for their day out before baby makes three. Whether or not these two are having a boy or a girl (conflicting reports leave that up for debate), one thing is for sure. The little one will certainly have a variety of hair styling products to choose from once he or she is old enough.

Finding The Perfect Pair Of Jeans

I wear a size 0 in jeans and having a hard time finding jeans that fit my body type. I am 5'0 feet tall and weigh 110. I have full hips, a full butt and a tiny waist and I am having a difficult time fitting into regular jeans. Any recommendations? Jean Queen

Dear Jean Queen
Your problem is more common than you could ever imagine. Here's the solution: find a great fit in the leg area and then take em' in around the waist (even the stars use this trick). Designer jeans are expensive, so if you are spending $130 + on a pair, adding an additional $10 for a hem and another $10 for a waist tuck is a great investment and you'll wind up with a customized pair. I recommend jeans that have a slight percentage of stretch in them. The new skinny jeans are famous for this but I am not a huge fan if you've got full hips and a booty. The girls who are wearing these have more boyish figures (long legs, straight, thin hips). You've got the curves, so the challenge is to find the perfect pair that flatters your apple bottom. Go with a boot cut to keep your body shape balanced. Try 7 For All Mankind (Boy Cut or Rocker Styles), Citzens Of Humanity (the basic Kelly Boot Cut is where it's at) Rock and Republic and my personal favorites that flatter Paige Premium Denim. Work it girl.
