Come Party With Me: Wedding - Drinks

One of the biggest expenses at a wedding reception is the drinks. Hosting a full open bar is a costly option, and if you don't have an unlimited budget, I would not recommend doing it. Instead offer guests one signature cocktail and an assortment of beer and wine. Another option is to host a day reception, because people don't drink as much when the sun's out. Be sure to ask the wait staff not to pre-open wine bottles. If they do, you may be left with a bunch of open, full bottles.

Along with the signature cocktail at Elena and Sean's wedding, guests will have a choice of Champagne, red or white wine, or a selection of local beers. The cocktail is a refreshing, delish blend of rum, cointreau, and sparkling pomegranate. It has a glorious hue that matches the wedding's color scheme.

Rum Pomegranate Cocktail
From Brides magazine

Ingredients

1½ oz. Bacardi White Rum
¼ oz. Cointreau (orange liqueur)
Splash of lime juice
2½ oz. Izze sparkling pomegranate juice
Colored sugar (for rim)

Directions

Dip rim of glass in water, then in colored sugar.
Combine rum, liqueur and juices with ice in the glass, and stir.

Serves 1.

Relax Already: Take Some Time For Yourself

Modern life is hectic and if you are planning a wedding - wow talk about an exponential increase on the stress-o-meter. Here are some things for a bride-to-be, or any stressed out lady for that matter, to try to keep sane during the wedding mania.

Breathe: Take some time out to just breathe (I think Faith Hill might have got it right). Sit somewhere comfy and focus on your breath, the inhale and the exhale. Try to do this for 5 minutes. You will be surprised how a little meditation goes a long way.
Soak: Take a bath and let all the stress just float away. Light come candles, use some essential oils and listen to some calming music. Now that is what I call quality alone time.
Daydream: It is A-OK to space out and let your thoughts wander. You might just figure out the seating arrangement conundrum while daydreaming.
Exercise: Nothing keeps me more sane than a good run. If you don't have time to hit the gym, drop to the floor and do your side push ups, and your elbow planks. Your arms and your mind will love you after.

Runaway Brides in China Taking Their Bride Price With Them

With a surplus of bachelors in China thanks to the one-child policy and cultural preference for boys, the country is starting to see more runaway brides - who run away with the bride price their grooms-to-be saved up for the bride’s family.

“Cai li,” the set amount the groom’s family pays the bride’s family, used to be a small sum in the '80s. But since the country has become more prosperous and prospective brides more scarce, the sums have risen to sometimes several years’ worth of a farming family’s income.

Officials speculate that although the runaway bride phenomenon isn’t exactly yet an epidemic, they’re concerned that when the runaways happen in clusters, organized crime rings may be behind the scams.

The British Journal of Medicine estimates that in a recent census, there was a surplus of 32 million males under the age of 20.

Bridal Beauty Looks, Part III: The Daring Bride

The daring bride has no intentions of having a conventional wedding. She's a modern day woman who thinks outside the box and marches to her own tune. Think Sarah Jessica Parker (she wore black), Dita Von Teese or Alabama from True Romance! A daring bride is unlike the princess bride or the natural bride. Her goal is to have the kind of affair that will make her and her fiance happy, not to conform to the customs of tradition.

She may choose not to wear white, she might even skip out on a veil, bridesmaids and an assigned seated reception. The sky is the limit. Oftentimes I hear something like this from non-traditional brides: I'll do what I want, I'll have what I want and I'll wear what I want. This affair could even be a second wedding or something more spur of the moment.

Primer: The most important thing about creating a dramatic look is having flawless skin. This isn't the time to skip the primer. Start by applying something amazing like Laura Geller's Spackle Makeup Primer, $25.
Concealer/Foundation: Next, add some concealer under your eyes and also to anything left over that still looks red or blotchy. I love The Balm's Time Balm Concealer, $16, since it gives you great coverage but it doesn't crease or feather. Then apply a foundation such as Yves Saint Laurent Perfect Touch Radiant Brush Foundation, $50, for full coverage that won't feel overly heavy and that will keep your skin looking hydrated.
Cheeks: If you are going to go heavier on your eyes and lips then you must keep your cheeks soft. Try something neutral such as Cover Girl Cheekers Blush in Natural Shimmer, $3.
Highlighter: If you haven't tried Physician's Formula Pearls of Perfection Face Tint in Translucent Glow, $13, you're going to love it. Just be careful that you don't overdo it. Drop the tiniest amount on your hand and swipe a small amount onto the upper portion of your cheekbones for a little bit of glow!
Brows: Brows need to be strong for this look. Make sure they are groomed and arched properly. Then fill them in (remember, just one shade lighter than your hair color) with something like Bobbi Brown All In One Mini Compact, $35.
Eyes: You can go dark on the eyes, but you'll want to keep the colors neutral if you are opting for a bold lip. I really love some of the new Spring colors out such as Estee Lauder Pure Color Eye Shadows in Copper Penny (lid), Chocolate (crease) and Tea Biscuit (brow bone) $21 each. Line eyes with either a black or deep brown cream eye liner. Then add a touch of your highlighter in the inner corners of your eyes for some extra pop. To finish your dramatic eyes, first curl your lashes and then apply two to three coats of thickening mascara in black. You might also want to apply false lashes for a more dramatic effect.
Lips: Begin by applying a pressed powder on and around your lips. Next use a deep liner such as Givenchy Lip Lip Lip Liner in Lip Rosewood, $23, followed by a super rich plum color like Givenchy Rouge Interdit Satin Lipstick in Ilicit Raspberry, $26. You can leave lips as is or top them off with a high shine gloss such as Givenchy Pop Gloss Syrup Lip Gloss in Raspberry, $22, for deep color with serious shine.

Welcome to part four of my series on wedding makeup. So far we've talked about the type of products to use if you're planning a beach wedding, an eco wedding or a royal wedding. However, the edgy bride has a style that's all her own. Her out-of-the-box, unorthodox beauty look is for someone looking to stay true to their own hip and individual style instead of conforming to one that's polished, pink and on-trend, (i.e. your typical bride). I like this little fashion trick Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson are playing on us. On the European red carpet for Bride Wars, Anne wore a light hued Gianfranco Ferre dress, while Kate wore a dark Louis Vuitton one. Then in the garden photo shoot, Kate wore a light outfit, while Anne went dark. Is it night and day? Salt and pepper? At the Berlin premiere, both wore all black.
