Nominees for the 2009 British Fashion Awards Announced

With just a few weeks to go until the 2009 British Fashion Awards take place on December 9th, the British Fashion Council have just released a list of nominees. The awards celebrate the movers and shakers in the fashion industry from newcomers to classic brands. Last years winners included Luella (who has since lost financial support for her label) and Jourdan Dunn. This year, model of the year is sure to be the most talked about category as Daisy Lowe, Georgia May Jagger and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley battle it out for the prize. I am quite surprised that these three have been chosen as none of them are big catwalk names, instead they have all landed very impressive campaigns. What do you think of the nominees?

Designer of the Year and the the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator will be announced on the night.

Fab Flash: British Fashion Council Takes Closer Look at Airbrushing

In the wake of the British Fashion Council's Model Health Inquiry, which resulted in models under 16 being banned from the London catwalks, the airbrushed pages of magazines are now coming into question.

The British Fashion Council (BFC) wrote to the UK's Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) in December to suggest "a voluntary code covering the use of digital manipulation [in photography]." A BFC spokeswoman said that rather than limiting magazine's use of airbrushing, they would like to see a warning that the image had been altered instead. The PPA yesterday agreed to discuss the matter with British magazine editors.

Do you think it would be productive to have a surgeon general-type warning on airbrushed images? I'd be interested to see what unairbrushed images actually look like. Would you?

Fab Flash: Marks and Spencers in Trouble Over TV Advert

Marks and Spencer have landed in hot water this festive season over their ad campaign below. The TV advert stars many British celebrities including Twiggy, Stephen Fry and Myleene Klass, but it's the appearance of Ashes to Ashes actor Philip Glenister which has ruffled feathers. The Advertising Standards Authority is reportedly looking in to complaints over the ad which has been branded as "sexist". At one point Glenister says, "Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without that girl prancing around in her underwear," before cutting to a shot of French lingerie model Noemie Lenoir.

A spokesperson for M&S told the BBC, "We're surprised by the ASA complaints regarding Philip Glenister's appearance in our TV ad. Our research shows that his on-screen character in Ashes to Ashes is extremely popular with our customers and his lines in the ad are in keeping with that role." Do you agree with the complaints or do you think this is a case of viewers being over-sensitive?

Are You Ignoring the Maclaren Recall?

Recall? Who cares?! When recalls are announced, some people run back to the store to get their money back, but others keep on keeping on with their less than perfect goods. Such is the case with many a Maclaren pushing mommies. As I strolled about town yesterday, I couldn't help but notice the dominance of the British buggies rolling around in San Francisco - yours truly included. All different models with varying ages of children made their way through small spaces and tight sidewalks. While some mothers might have stopped using their recalled models, some clearly have no problem pushing the popular, if hazardous, strollers. When asked about their continued use, some declared they were more cautious when folding and collapsing it because of the hinge issue. Others said they called for the hinge repair kit while others threw caution to the wind saying there are probably dangers with every pushchair on the market... touché.

Are you taking the recall to heart or just using your stroller with caution?

Breaking News: Victoria's Secret Is Coming to the UK

Calling all lingerie fans - there's some exciting news on the horizon! Following the successful launch of Banana Republic, Abercrombie & Fitch and Anthropologie in the UK, another store is rumoured to be crossing the Atlantic. Victoria's Secret has already begun to scout for store locations. Just last week, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (previously the face of Agent Provocateur) was announced as a new Angel taking position as the only British model to represent the brand along with four other new faces; Chanel Iman, Emanuela de Paula, Lindsay Ellingson and Candice Swanepoel.

Now it seems she could have started a trend within Victoria's Secret for a love of all things British as a Regent Street store is supposedly in the pipeline. The Angels will host their annual fashion show on 19th November (just a few weeks after Heidi Klum gave birth) and are expected to recreate George Michael's Freedom video. Anthropologie's November catalog is a surefire way to get in the holiday spirit. British model Jacquetta Wheeler - dressed in everything from pretty lace to cozy sweaters - is seen frolicking in (faux) snow. It's all so romantic. I can't help but be consumed by the impressive styling, and I'm sure CasaSugar is mesmerized by the rustic scene. Fab Ad: Daisy Lowe for Louis Vuitton

There has been lots of exciting news recently about who will be featured in the upcoming Spring 2010 ad campaigns. Claudia Schiffer is the face of Chanel, Natalia Vodianova is working with YSL, Georgia May Jagger is the new Versace star and it has now been reported that Daisy Lowe is working with Louis Vuitton.

The British model will appear in a swimwear press kit being shot this weekend in Miami. The photos will also include shoes, bags and accessories from the line which will hit stores in April. I'm excited to see more of Daisy and I think her natural curves will be perfect for showcasing swimwear What do you think of this choice?

The Dieting of Mothers Visits Daughters in Eating Disorders

Parents model behavior for their children, whether consciously or not. A recent survey conducted by British teen mag Sugar (no relation to the PopSugar Network) found that a dieting mother can have unfortunate consequences for daughters.

Out of the 512 girls surveyed, ages 12 to 18, six percent had an eating disorder; that number rose to one in 10 among girls with mothers who dieted. Girls learn how to create a self-image from observing their mothers, and when mom labels certain foods bad and dangerous, her daughter internalizes the message. It has been shown that regular family meals can help prevent eating disorders, and when the female head of household removes herself from the ritual of the family dinner impressionable eyes are watching. Negative body image from mothers affects girls too. This is why I learned to stop talking smack about my thighs. Did your mom diet? Did it affect your relationship with food?

Naomi Campbell Speaks Out About "Minority Models"

Naomi Campbell has long pioneered ethnic diversity on the catwalk having received a boost to her own career from Yves Saint Laurent. The British born model was part of Italian Vogue's historic issue last Summer, but this weekend she spoke out about how there is still a great “injustice” within the fashion industry.

Speaking at the 4th Annual Thurgood Marshall College Fund Front Row Fashion Show she explained, “There is a small group of people whose minds we have to change because we are living in a multicultural society.”

Naomi added, “Nelson Mandela always told me to speak my mind and the consequences will take care of themselves.” She received a fashion icon award at the event which also honoured makeup artist Sam Fine, Oprah Winfrey’s hairstylist, Andre Walker and the late Michael Jackson. Do you think that more should be done for minority models in the industry?

2009 British Fashion Awards Date Announced

The British Fashion Awards is one of the biggest dates in the fashion calendar. The awards celebrate everybody who is involved in the industry from designers to models. The date for 2009 has just been revealed by the British Fashion Council and it will take place on December 9th, at The Royal Courts of Justice, in London.

The awards recognises the most influential in the industry which creates around £8.5 billion worth of goods a year. It is again sponsored by Swarovski and will be judged by an international panel of editors, buyers, and models. Last year, Luella Bartley scooped designer of the year whilst Jourdan Dunn bagged best model. Who do you think we win designer of the year for 2009?
