California Student Stops Out-of-Control School Bus; Gets Detention For Skipping Class

While technically being at the wrong place at the wrong time, a 15-year-old hometown hero was exactly where she needed to be. It's unclear why Amanda Rouse was on a bus full of elementary school kids when she was supposed to be in class - a high school class. But thankfully, she was ready to take hold of the wheel when the bus driver fell out of her seat (wtf?) and lost control. Our champ saved the day and what did she get in return? A Saturday detention. Headline: School Bus Overturned in Maryland

A school bus carrying children overturned this morning in Prince George's County, Maryland.

Prince George's County police confirm that students and the bus driver were injured, and reports are now saying that 11 children and the driver were transported to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time. This is the second school bus accident in Maryland this week.

When my friends visited me in NYC a few summers ago, when I still lived there, there was one thing they requested be on our itinerary: the Sex and the City bus tour. It's really the best way to experience the sights and stores that Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda did for ten years. A few things have been tweaked since my tour - like visiting Patricia Field's boutique on Bowery Street - but you still get cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery (delish!), sit on Carrie's stoop, and drink cosmos at a bar used on the show. There's much more than that so if you're ever in NYC for more than 4 hours, be sure to put this on your schedule.

Walking School Bus

When I was growing up, I walked to school. I wore my backpack and carried my alto saxophone. Now, I know those were simpler times, but walking is a great way for kids to get around in general and a great way for them to get to school.

According to the New York Times 50% of all students walked or biked to school, now it is only 15%. Most students are driven to school via bus or car. It makes sense since parents are concerned about protecting their children from traffic hazards and predators. It just seems unfortunate that at a time when the obesity rates are rising among children (not to mention carbon emissions/environmental problems), walking to school, which provides a moderate amount of exercise, is not an option for many families.

One way to get the kids walking to school is by walking with them or by sharing the walk with other families nearby. The Walking School Bus is a great organization dedicated to getting kids to school on foot or bike in one big ol' group. There is truth to the saying "Safety in numbers." Plus, if you are involved in a "walking school bus," the parents involved take turns walking with the kids so you don't have to walk with them everyday. Who knows, you and your kids might even make some new friends.

Geek trends across the globe seem to be popping up everywhere! If you ever go to Hamburg, Germany keep your eyes peeled for their latest techie installments: Color-changing bus shelters. Designed by Hadi Teherani, these Landmark Bus Stops contain lighting systems that will change colors to provide alternating light and moods at night. Featured on Yanko Design, this new-age bus stop is apart of a product family that has been developed for the city in order "convey a harmonious overall image of the urban area." Since most of you loved the light-up park benches, I'm wondering if you'll love this as well.

Women Worry That Obama Is Throwing Them Under the Bus

Back in January, feminist magazine Ms. hailed Barack Obama as a super feminist. But the president's recent tepid response to protecting abortion rights might mean that the love affair with Obama is about to end for many women. Over at the Daily Beast, women's rights activist Amy Siskind argues that the Stupak amendment, which treats women's rights as a political bargaining chip that can be traded for healthcare reform, is just one more example of how Obama couldn't care less about women . . . except when he's trying to win their votes of course. She writes:

He appointed fewer women into his cabinet than President Bill Clinton. He surrounded himself with czars, more than 90 percent of whom are male. He appointed Larry Summers, of "girls are inferior in math and science" fame, to a key economic post. He played basketball, golfed and fished with men and men only. He had beers with Skip Gates, but ignored it when Rihanna was almost strangled to death. And so on.

Of course it's not all bad. Ms. released a report chronicling the giant strides Obama made for women during his first 100 days in office. These actions included: signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, instituting a new ambassador-at-large for global women's issues, establishing the White House Council on Women and Girls, and overturning the "global gag rule" in order to re-fund global family planning organizations.

Mom-Me Time: Pick Up a Copy of The Help

If mama's got a few minutes to herself and is looking for something that will take her mind to another world, she needs not look further than this gold and purple hardback book. The Help ($12) is a quick read that will steal her attention and her affection and leave her wanting more. Kathryn Stockett's first novel, the book about the relationships between mothers and the women that help them (nannies in particular) will have mommy laughing out loud, tearing up in the eyes, dog-earring pages with special passages and thinking about how she relates to some of the closest people in her life.

Just pages into the lengthy text and I was hooked. Unlike any book I've read in recent times, the characters in these pages immediately come to life and fully color the imagination. You can picture their hair, dream up their clothes and hear their voices like they're sitting on the bus right next to you. While they may be fictional muses, I wish I could meet them, thank them, reprimand them and have a tall glass of sweetened iced tea with them. Centered around the lives of three caretakers, the hired "help" who tend to high society's children may occasionally be called "mama" as they often forge a closer bond with the child than his own mother. And while some women may have their best friends to rely on, the housekeeper frequently knows and cares more than her "best" friends -the phrase "dirty laundry" having a double meaning when it comes to life behind closed doors. In the end, it is a story about women taking extraordinary measures to right some wrongs, even if it means risking it all. Of all the lessons to be learned from this rich novel, the golden rule speaks loudest - "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Maybe that's why she wrapped it in a glowing cover.

Before this goes to the theaters, which it surely will, buy it, read it and gift it to everyone you know. It will not disappoint.
