This Friday a group of my closest friends will join me at my vacation house in the mountains. It's going to be a whirlwind weekend filled with amazing eats, snowboarding, and a birthday celebration. My girlfriend Katie is turning 29 and I'm making her cake.

Just because they don't eat meat or diary, doesn't mean vegans don't enjoy sweets. When hosting a vegan dinner — like the one I'm making for my detoxing sister and friends this weekend — do serve dessert.
Instead of using eggs, this easy vanilla pound cake with lime glaze, calls for silken tofu.

This dessert isn't necessarily light in the "lite" sense, but with its delicate glaze and perky lemon profile, it's a bright and buoyant counterbalance to all the chocolate holiday confections. With some Meyer lemons from a friend's tree, I made this lemon cornmeal cake as an epilogue to Christmas, and it was unintimidating yet delightfully different.
Remembering another recipe I've been wanting to make for a polenta cake, I decided to take the Mediterranean inspiration and substitute olive oil for the butter, which gave the cake a rich, but exotic flavor.

Yesterday, I had a crummy, stressful day at work. It was one of those days when the higher-ups are freaking out about an impossible deadline at the end of the week, getting everyone else all stirred up and anxious, only to find out later that the deadline is actually two weeks away.

A couple of weeks ago I was asked to make a birthday cake for a friend. His favorite flavors are ginger, pumpkin, and chocolate — in that order, so I wanted to make some sort of layer cake that incorporated these elements.
After an extensive Internet search, I couldn't find a recipe.

Along with a hearty Fall meal, at my annual pumpkin carving party, I like to serve a pumpkin themed dessert.
In the past I've done ice cream sandwiches and pumpkin bars, but this year I've been all about cakes, so I'll be whipping up a relatively easy pumpkin cake.
The batter is seasoned with orange zest and the frosting is a decadent blend of caramel and cream cheese.

I must admit: I'm not the world's biggest fan of cheesecake, it's always seemed a bit too rich. But I'm obsessed with red velvet cake, and was intrigued when I first heard about red velvet cheesecake. I put it on my list of things to make and before I could get to it, The Cheesecake Factory came out with a version and sent one our way — along with a couple others.

I'm always reminded of the change in the seasons with the arrival of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which begins at sundown this Friday. It seems to straddle the end of Summer and the beginning of Fall. For Jews around the world, it's a time to come together with family, contemplate the past year, and hope for good deeds in the months ahead.Rosh Hashanah's food customs echo these sentiments.
