Group Therapy: Was This a One-Night Stand?

I recently went to a bar to celebrate a co-worker's birthday. While I was there, I met someone unaffiliated with work. We spoke all night over drinks and then before the bar closed, he kissed me and then proposed three options: one) his place, two) my place, and three) dinner sometime next week. I chose one and three!

I went back with him and we had a wonderful evening. The next morning, after more kissing, cuddling, etc., he made me breakfast and then drove me home. His phone was dead so he gave me his number which I called right away so that he'd have mine. If he doesn't call, how long should I wait before calling him? I'd prefer not to call at all because I want to know if he's truly interested in me, but if there's a chance that his phone was off, then his caller ID wouldn't have captured my number - I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to go out again. What should I do?

Group Therapy: Great First Date, No Phone Call, and Now This!

I had a great first date with a guy about two weeks ago. I was surprised that he didn't ask me out again and didn't call. I saw him on Saturday, and he seemed really happy to see me. He gave me a big hug, asked how I'd been, and introduced me to the people he was with. So what gives? Do you think he's interested? Should I make the move and e-mail him or something, or was he just being nice to avoid confrontation?

Do Tell: Would You Rather Get Dumped or Ignored?

The dating game can be extremely cut throat. On a first date, it's easy to tell if there's an attraction or not, but what happens when one person feels it and the other doesn't? Well, someone's bound to get hurt, of course! A common complaint I hear from women is "why didn't he call?" To play devil's advocate, I must ask, do you always call him? Of course, it's hard to accept that the main reason he doesn't call is because he's just not that into you, but let me ask you this: Would you rather have him call and straight up tell you that or have him just disappear, never to be heard from again? I'd take the latter, but ladies, do tell, what about you?

Bad Lieutenant: Good Cop Gone Nuts

Nicolas Cage has said, "There's a very fine line between Method actor and schizophrenic." In Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, he teeters that line maniacally, with an ever-increasing slur and crooked swagger. Cage plays Terence McDonagh, a detective in post-Katrina New Orleans investigating a drug-related murder and his personal threshold for cocaine and heroin.

The first news of Bad Lieutenant was puzzling: famously extreme director Werner Herzog re-imagining a 1992 cult movie, also called Bad Lieutenant, but shifting the action to New Orleans and casting Nic Cage in the Harvey Keitel role opposite his Ghost Rider costar Eva Mendes. Weird.

But in fact, Bad Lieutenant is Herzog's second surprisingly accessible movie in as many years, following 2007's Rescue Dawn. And Cage is brilliant in a role seemingly made for him, so read more.

The noirish, pulpy, desperate, and often hilarious film opens with a good deed: McDonagh dives into a Katrina-flooded jail cell to save a prisoner's life, in the process injuring his back and subsequently getting hooked on Vicodin and then far harder drugs.

As a degenerate cop in a washed-out city, Cage makes Denzel Washington's Training Day villain look like a Boy Scout. He slithers through the streets, confiscating drugs to snort with his prostitute girlfriend (Mendes), hooking up with a drug kingpin played by Alvin "Xzibit" Joiner, and fending off a rising tide of self-created trouble. "Being courteous is really getting in the way of my progress," he croaks before one of his more disturbing moral lapses.

In post-Katrina New Orleans, Herzog has found the perfect setting. He never lets the city look pretty or even charmingly decayed, and he populates it with iguanas and alligators and snakes and fish. At every turn, McDonagh is confronted by cold-blooded animals, as he careens between the call of duty and the cold-blooded instinct of his addiction. It's impossible to ignore the reptilian symbolism, and the effect is perfectly bizarre. Despite its darkest moments, Bad Lieutenant is a remarkably good trip.

This week, a woman unwilling to settle shares her wisdom with a distraught woman who's sick of her boyfriend calling her cruel names. October is domestic violence awareness month. Remember, just because he's not punching you in the face doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. Verbal abuse is still abuse.

This week's question:

"Every time my boyfriend gets angry, I get called names. 'Bitch' is the most often one thrown at me. I have told him so many times that it hurts me but he says it's only words. Sometimes he doesn't even apologize. Yesterday, he told me a story about his friend. I told him that I had a headache. He started shouting and telling me that I just wasn't interested, that I was rude. I wanted him to shut up. He called me a bitch again! He always tells me that he would never call me anything if I didn't make him by behaving like an idiot. Once he called me pathetic. I told him I didn't like that and he said at least he didn't call me a bitch. I'm sick and tired of explaining how wrong he is. He thinks he knows better. Please help!"

Dear In Pain:

GET OUT. DUMP HIM. MOVE ON. LET GO. LEAVE. DROP HIM!

The simple truth is that your boyfriend does not respect you and he certainly doesn’t value you, your feelings, or your relationship. He is literally shouting this at you. And it’s time for you to hear him, loud and clear.

I realize it’s easy to become confused in matters of the heart. But at the core of any meaningful, loving, long-lasting relationship is always going to be respect. (Trust Aretha to say it like it is!) Without that, you’ve got nothing. And that is exactly what you’ve got right now-nothing.

Your boyfriend doesn’t have the maturity, self-awareness, or emotional development to be the man you want or to offer you the relationship you deserve. (Or at least I presume you expect something more, since you’ve taken the time to write in!)

You are only fooling yourself if you think this guy is going to change. And while you continue to endure his demeaning comments and cruel behavior, you could be out there enjoying the world, meeting new people, and building a life and relationships to be proud of. What are you waiting for?

Take that next step! Show yourself a little respect and leave him and his drama behind you. And while you’re at it, ask yourself one very simple question: why are you in this situation to begin with? If you take the time to sort out your head now, you’ll spare yourself the heartache and disappointment of repeating the same pattern in the future. And at that point you'll be free to meet someone worthy of your time and your heart. Stop being so afraid to take responsibility for your own happiness and make the change now!
