Carla Bruni Offers Another Cautionary Tale Against Racy Pics

While Carla's away, French thieves are at play.

Hundreds of intimate photos and some videos of the French first lady were stolen from the apartment of her ex-lover's brother this week. The racy images were recorded during her relationship with philosopher Raphael Enthoven, who is also the father of her son. Before she was with Raphael, she was involved with his father. But I digress.

Since her more wild days, Carla has been trying to tone down her image. Instead of taking X-rated photos, Mrs. Sarkozy is now photographed fully clothed (in designer digs) on official state visits. But this isn't the first time the public has been reminded of her risqué past. Last year a photographer released nude photos of the first lady.

Enchanté? Carla Bruni Meets Her Match in Spain

It's no secret we're obsessed with all things French at TrèsSugar, and France's first lady, Carla Bruni, is no exception. But while she may be our favorite, the Daily Mail claims she was bested yesterday by Princess Letizia of Spain in style and beauty.

Carla accompanied President Nicolas Sarkozy to Spain to placate rumors that Spanish tempers ran high after a gaffe-y Sarkozy said Spanish Premier Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was "not very smart." What better way to reach peace than to bring two beautiful faces from each country together?

I will insert an obligatory line about how both women are beautiful in their own right because, well, they are, but that takes me away from a problem I want to discuss. Beautiful women - Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni, and now Princess Letizia - are used to distract us from the political issues at hand. You know, like how President Sarkozy said something mean about the Spanish premier. Mon dieu!

Anyway, since the Daily Mail started it, I am going to finish. With a superior integration of the beauty-pageant-like sash and fortunate absence of a tiara, Carla reigns.

The Fashionable Crowd Dine in Paris For a Good Cause

Glamourous gowns were on fine display at the Fashion Dinner for AIDS at Pavillon d'Armenonville in Paris last night. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was joined by Lou Doillon, Dita Von Teese, Milla Jovovich and Misha Barton, who went from the haute couture shows to the dinner table. Gorgeous Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger brought their love affair from the streets of New York to the banqueting halls of Paris, while Clemence Poesy and newly engaged Vanessa Paradis looked happy to be in their home country.

Carla Bruni's Vanity (Fair)

Carla Bruni Sarkozy is gracing the cover of Vanity Fair this month, for their special September style issue, photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

The ultra stylish former model, and singer, is looking typically polished. I am in slight awe at the shininess of her hair.

Carla has a fresh-faced, natural approach to beauty that often comes after years of modelling. I also like the fact she doesn't pretend to be a girl without a past. The Italian beauty dated Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, amongst others, before marrying President Nicolas Sarkozy, in February.

"It's not that I had a lot of lovers, Carla tells Vanity Fair, "it's that I never hide them. It's a different thing."

It is refreshing to find a pretty woman in the public eye, who isn't afraid to actually open her mouth and talk. I know that in general French women hate her – my best friend, the Femme Fatale is all vitriol whenever I admire Carla's hair or her clear skin – but I like that she's openly sexy. Surely, we can admire beautiful women, in the public eye, without being consumed by hate or jealousy.

Karl Lagerfeld, who has used her as a model in the past, has only good things to say about the new First Lady, as well.

“She’s imaginative, clever, educated." He tells Vanity Fair. "She knows how to behave.”

Kylie Keeps It Fresh With New Hair Cut

Kylie Minogue looked gorgeous as she left the Meurice Hotel in Paris yesterday, sporting a new hair-do. She spent some time shopping in the French capital, visiting Martin Margiela's boutique, and then headed back to George V Hotel to pick up her luggage. As well as changing up her hair, Kylie's also shaking things up with her businesses, releasing a cologne for men to join her perfumes for women. Fab Flash: Carla Bruni Bag Causes Controversy

A shopper bag by Pardon has caused controversy this weekend which looks likely to end in a court battle. The white shopper features a naked image of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy taken in 1993 with the tag line “My guy should have bought Pardon!"

There are currently 10,000 of the bag is circulation but France's first lady isn't dealing with the issue lightly. Her lawyer Thierry Herzog told The Telegraph, "Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has exclusive and absolute rights over her image,” and added that the photo had been used “without her consent and to promotional and commercial ends.”

Carla is asking for 125,000 euros in damages which she intends to donate to charity but Peter Mertes founder of Pardon argues that the picture was of “a public woman - you find photos of her everywhere.”

The bags are being sold for just three euros or are being given away with purchases.

Diane and Josh Join the French Fashion Flock for Dinner

The Spring couture extravaganza wrapped up last night with the annual star-studded Fashion Dinner for AIDS in Paris. Like last year, Diane Kruger and Josh Jackson got fancy to mingle with French celebs like First Lady Carla Bruni and Vanessa Paradis, who was rolling without her man Johnny Depp. Mischa Barton, Milla Jovovich, and Dita von Teese were also on hand to participate in the charitable evening after their fun week of revelry. We're sure to see lots more of the fashion crowd as they gear up for the Fall presentations to come next month.

Fancy First Lady Steals Sarkozy's Mideast Peace Talk Thunder?

Though his visit ended amid panic, France's Nicolas Sarkozy's first presidential visit to Israel this week made quite an impression. Sarkozy called on the country to stop settlement in the occupied West Bank, saying Mideast peace depends on Israel dropping its refusal to surrender sovereignty over parts of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinians. As compensation, he assured Israel that it could count on France's support in halting Iran's nuclear program.

Sarkozy praised Israel's democracy and quoted the biblical passage in which God promises the Holy Land to the children of Israel, drawing a mixed review of applause and scowls (from the handful of Arab members). Speaking to parliament he said:

"There cannot be peace without an immediate and complete halt to settlement," he said. "There cannot be peace without recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of two states and the guarantee of free access to the holy places for all religions."

Sarkozy's address follows fluffy weekend coverage of his arrival by the country's newspapers that seemed more preoccupied with his Italian singer First Lady Carla Bruni than his agenda. According to the AP, the front pages of Monday's newspapers were filled with pictures of a smiling Carla "overshadowing her husband." For a preview of their coverage, read more.

The Haaretz daily, which is Israel's oldest daily newspaper, featured a front page close-up of Carla, taken as the couple arrived at Israel's international airport Sunday, with Sarkozy and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the background.

Israel's largest daily, Yediot Ahronot, used the front page headline "Queen Carla" to tease a spread with a collage of her photos and a celebrity style-esque breakdown of her wardrobe - including the $2,500 Prada dress she wore upon arrival, a $1,200 purse and a $650 pair of sandals.
