Friday Feel Good: Simon's Cat Continues to Be Needy

In advance of Happy Caturday, I thought I'd post this cute cartoon Fuzzles sent our way. The Simon's cat series depict essentially the same scenario: Simon's cat will not be ignored, and resorts to all manner of devious acts to get attention. Whether it's jumping all over Simon when he tries to sleep, or messing up his papers when he's trying to work, the cat is a punkass. But still adorable.

Do You Know Anyone Like The Goode Family?

An extremely politically correct cartoon-family is coming to a television near you. Mike Judge of King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-head fame has created a new show - The Goode Family - which premiers on ABC tonight.

The Goodes are many shades of green. They use reusable shopping bags (not the ones made in sweat shops), drive hybrid cars, recycle, and ask themselves: what would Al Gore do? In addition to being environmentally conscious, they're also socially aware: they're vegans, have a dog named Che, and they even adopted a little boy from Africa. (Once they adopted Ubuntu, they found out he was actually born to white Afrikaans parents in South Africa. They still have him wear traditional African dress.)

The premise sort of reminds me of the South Park episode all about smug people in San Francisco. In that episode, the "smug" (smog) from preachy, hybrid car owners ends up causing an environmental disaster. Despite the similarities in using progressives as their targets, The Good Family does treat the earnest clan a little kinder than South Park would, making it apparent that the characters have genuine intentions.

OMG BFF LOL: Two Mall Rats Talk Shopping and Wanting

Well, I guess this says something about the state of current girlhood in America, but it's not, um, pretty. OMG BFF LOL is a cartoon from artist Charlie White's exhibit The Girl Studies. It follows two girls who love shopping at the mall, and like, shopping some more.

In this episode, the two Barbie-like teens walk in and exclaim malls are like heaven - everything you could ever want on a never-ending path of tiled floors. But then the pessimist of the duo contemplates that the mall is much more like hell: everything you could want, but you can't have it all. Deep! My favorite quote? "I love to want."

At first, OMG BFF LOL just seems senseless and over the top, and then it seems like a hellish prequel to Sex and the City. Maybe the unending cycle of wanting-getting-wanting will die with malls?

Ogilvy Paris Ads Try to Make Scrabble Cool

The whole point of Scrabble for word nerd devotees, though, is the game's extreme nerdiness. Instead of going out on a Saturday night, you hang out with friends and/or a sweetie and string together words unrelated outside of their common letters. In this Ogilvy ad from France, animators imagine a whole array of creatures borne of these disparate words that meet up in a colorful cartoon set to punk music. Preaching to the choir - but pretty cute.

Holy Manhole! "In the name of decent citizens everywhere," stop and watch the dynamic duo fight crime and take time to unrealistically abide by street safety rules. You'd think their stalling would work against them, but thanks to the convenient manhole located smack in the middle of street, the Joker ain't the last one laughing and the crime fighting goody-goodies effortlessly save the day! Bwahahahaha!

Since when are children's cartoon characters passive-aggressive a-holes? The following clips were gathered from a single season of The Legends of Zelda, an animated series based on the popular Nintendo games. The show didn't last long and it's no wonder why. One can listen to a broken record for only so long. . .
