Hawaii Five-O Returning to TV

Book 'em, Dano! Hawaii Five-O is coming back to CBS. The network is currently at work developing a 2.0 version of the classic cop series, and the writers behind it include two of the guys from Fringe, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci.

I feel pretty confident about the cult favorite's return given that it's in such capable hands, but with yesterday's news that Southland got canceled, can any police drama - even one with established fans - survive against TV titans CSI and Law & Order? Here's hoping Hawaii Five-O may just stand a chance. I'm sure a few die-hard fans of the '70s original will be a bit unhappy about the new, undoubtedly slicked-up version, but as long as they leave the theme song alone, I'll be happy.

Lil's Top Three Favorite New Mom Shows!

After hearing all the hype about the networks' most anticipated sitcoms and dramas that centered around matriarchs, we tuned in and then narrowed down the choices to our top three must sees. Second Runnerup: The Middle
Why we like it: Patricia Heaton is back on the small screen as Frankie Heck, a mom of three who has more than her share of realistic haggard-mom moments.
Why we love it: While all of the characters are lovable, Brick's creepy habits, from talking in a low voice to "soothe" himself to copping feels on his teacher, make him the center of attention. Just when a viewer's skin begins to crawl, the youngster tells his mom that she's his hero, and it's impossible not to melt.

First Runnerup: The Good Wife
Why we like it: We've all wondered why real-life women like Elizabeth Edwards and Silda Spitzer stood by their men despite being humiliated. Julianna Margulies's character, Alicia Florrick, give us a better understanding.
Why we love it: Alicia is both a strong and sympathetic woman. While her circumstance is one most women hope to never find themselves in, Alicia is someone we all can relate to, because despite the enormity of some of her issues, she also deals with the everyday stuff like protecting her children from the media, enduring an overbearing mother-in-law, and competing with co-workers half her age at the office.

Best New Mom Show: Modern Family
Why we like it: The sitcom showcases three related families: a "traditional" couple raising three tween and teenagers, December/May newlyweds who have a young son, and gay partners with an adopted baby girl.
Why we love it: The show had us in stitches through its entirety. Each family has been so carefully crafted that there's no clear favorite. And, in all of the hilarity, there are sentimental moments interspersed that hit viewers in their heartstrings. Rating:

The Good Wife Is a Must Watch for Mothers

To say that Alicia Florrick from CBS's new show is The Good Wife is an understatement. After her politician husband Peter (Chris Noth) is embroiled in a sex scandal, she publicly appears with him. We've all wondered why real-life women like Elizabeth Edwards and Silda Spitzer stood by their men despite being humiliated. In Tuesday's episode, Alicia explains how she could never understand their behavior until she was in the situation. She says:

"How can you allow yourself to be used like that? And, then it happened and I was . . . unprepared."

Julianna Margulies is remarkable in her role as the wronged wife and former lawyer who returns to work after a long hiatus to become the family breadwinner during her husband's incarceration. To see why I think the show is a must watch for mothers, read more.

While the character's circumstance is one most women hope to never find themselves in, Alicia is someone we all can relate to because despite the enormity of some of her issues, she also deals with the everyday stuff like protecting her children from the media, enduring an overbearing mother-in-law, and competing with co-workers half her age at the office. The character has been crafted so it's impossible not to sympathize with and respect her. Who could forget the poignant opening scene where she slaps Peter after exiting the press conference? CBS's Accidentally on Purpose Pales in Comparison to Book

Mary Pols's Accidentally on Purpose made me laugh, cry, and relate. I rooted for the 39-year-old film critic and her baby daddy, Matt, as I read the author's witty account of her unplanned journey into motherhood. Considering the book to be the mama of all pregnancy must reads, I even gifted it to several expecting friends. So last night, I sat on my couch crossing my fingers that CBS's new sitcom based on the text would live up to my expectations. It didn't even come close. Here's why.

I couldn't wrap my mind around Jenna Elfman as Billie - I kept seeing Dharma and her over-the-top antics, but no Greg.

The stereotypical characters on the small screen lacked the depth of those in the text. Billie is a haphazard cougar on the prowl and Zack (Jon Foster) is an overgrown kid with poor pickup lines and idiot friends, a big stretch from the endearing 20-something in the book that got a woman several years his senior in the sack.
The season premiere was rushed. In a single episode, we saw the demise of Billie's relationship with James (Grant Show), her rebound fling with Zach, the two move in together and a nursery concocted.

I won't be watching the show again . . . unless the network saves the one-dimensional sitcom by hiring Pols as head writer. What's your opinion?

When I read Accidentally On Purpose, Mary Pols' honest and witty text transcended typical mommy lit and unfolded like the best movie I'd ever seen -little did I know it would hit the small screen! Tonight CBS premieres its sitcom based on the autobiographical book by the 39-year-old film critic who got pregnant during a one-night stand with a man 10 years her junior. I'm excited to see how the network and cast (which stars Jenna Elfman and British actress Ashley Jensen, who recently chatted with BuzzSugar) adapt the story of the couple who forged a friendship with benefits as they prepared to raise their child together into episodes. Art Imitates Life: Will You Watch Show About a Sex Scandal?

When CBS announced The Good Wife, an upcoming show about a politician's wife shamed by her husband's public sex scandal, there's no way the network could have predicted that cheating governor Mark Sanford would give the show an awesome tie-in to current events. Or maybe it could have - politicians seem to be having affairs at a rapid pace these days!

Refreshingly, the philandering politician (played by Chris Noth) is not the star of the show's plot. Rather, it's his scorned wife Alicia, who decides to put her long-deserted career as a lawyer back on track by taking a job as a junior associate at a prestigious law firm. From there, I'm guessing the plot takes a turn toward Law and Order.

Do You Tune Into Katie Couric's Evening News?

While the nightly headlines might not be so optimistic, things are looking up for Katie Couric and CBS. On the tails of her Sarah Palin interview this Summer, Katie has secured a Grammy special, and the first interview with US Airways pilot Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger. Meanwhile, ratings for the CBS Evening News are on the rise. Last year, it was almost impossible to find pro-Katie news out there. But now, experts speculate that Katie's warm presence makes her the perfect anchor for these tough times.

CBS Scores Another Daily Show Alum: Rob Riggle

CBS's comedy department is starting to look a little like The Daily Show, Primetime Edition. Current Daily Show correspondent Rob Riggle has just signed a deal to create and star in a half-hour CBS comedy, following a similar deal by Samantha Bee and Jason Jones last week.

Riggle is committed to The Daily Show through the end of the year, but after that, he'll make the jump to CBS to start working on his show. He's still kicking around ideas for the series, but one thought is that it could draw on his experiences as an officer in the Marine Corps Reserves, as Riggle's done before on the Daily Show.

I'm so glad to see that this wave of Daily Show correspondents will be branching out into new, cool-sounding projects, just like Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Rob Corddry, and Ed Helms did a few years ago. And hey, it looks like there will be some openings over at The Daily Show for 2009, so here's hoping the new correspondents they track down are just as funny as the ones who came before.

Is it Possible to Be President and Not Lie to Americans?

Who's a liar, liar pants-on-fire? Neither candidate apparently, according to answers given to Katie Couric as part of her "Presidential Questions" series. Couric asked last night, "Describe a situation when you think it's appropriate to lie to the American people." Here's what the candidates had to say:

Obama said of his truthiness policy, "You can put together a hypothetical where there is a national security emergency that is imminent, and you don't want to provide, for example, the location of our troops. You don't have to lie in those situations, you simply say, 'we're not answering questions.' I don't think it's appropriate to lie." He goes on to say he wants to change the "fudging" and the soft lies culture in Washington. Do you think the above description counts in this category?

McCain says he can't think of any real or logical scenario where he would feel compelled to lie to the American people, and when probed on the national security hypothetical, he says, "But if you deceive the American people and you want their support and you want them to beat back this national security challenge and you don't tell them the truth about it, then I think they become disillusioned. That's happened in the past." Hmm. I wonder how far "past?" It sounds so familiar. . .
