Sheryl Crow Is the Picture of (and on) Health

When I think of breast cancer survivors, Sheryl Crow is one of the first people to pop into my mind. Three years ago, she was diagnosed with the disease and is now happy to say she's cancer-free. These days, this down-to-earth, single mom is a breast cancer advocate, and in a candid interview with Health magazine, she talks about ways she's taking care of herself to stay healthy. Here's what she said about her diet.

"When I first got diagnosed, I went to this great nutritionist who specializes in disease prevention and well-being, and I still incorporate her tips like eating omega-3s - I eat salmon or other fish at least three times a week. I eat a lot of walnuts, almonds, colorful vegetables, and prunes, which get such a bad rap but are loaded with antioxidants. I also drink pomegranate juice and keep a vat of tomato soup around or some kind of tomato sauce, because it has lycopene. And one big thing I learned was that so much of wellness depends on your body getting rid of waste. So I eat a lot of Fiber One, which has 14 grams of fiber per serving."

Getting your fill of omega-3s, antioxidants like lycopene, and fiber have all been found to help prevent breast cancer, so following Sheryl's advice is a great way to put prevention into your own hands.

"I try to do something every day that’s sports-related, and I like to be outside. I love riding my bike, and playing tennis, and paddle surfing. I don’t love going to the gym, but I’ll do it if it’s rainy."

Research has shown that vigorous exercise (running, fast jogging, aerobics, bicycling on hills, etc.) can reduce the risk of breast cancer by about 30 percent in normal-weight women, so get moving like Sheryl to help prevent this disease. The singer also tries to rid her life of stress, lets out her emotions rather than bottling them up, and doesn't deny herself one of her favorite guilty pleasures - Lay's potato chips.

Bella Donna: Nina Simone

Nina Simone's first-remembered act of moral resistance occurred at one of her concerts when she was 12. Her proud parents, who were seated in the front row, were told to move to the back so that white attendees could have their seats. Nina, incensed, refused to continue playing until they were given back their rightful place. From then on, her career was marked by vocal, tenacious challenges to inequality.

Despite harm to her viability as a popular artist, she created some of the most memorable songs of the civil rights era, including "Mississippi Goddamn" and "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black." In addition, she took part in the Selma to Montgomery marches. She was also one of the first celebrities to embrace her natural hair texture, wearing everything from an afro to a modified hi-top fade. Although commercial success frequently eluded her, many of her songs are now standards of the jazz and soul canons, and she lived to see a resurgence in her popularity during the 1990's.

Her personal life was as tumultuous as her career, and she lived in Barbados, Liberia, the Netherlands, and Switzerland before settling in France, where she passed away after a protracted battle with breast cancer in 2003. We have Nina to thank not only for her music and her style, but for her unwavering sense of fairness and her compelling calls to action. She's an excellent example of someone who refused to be a bystander to injustice and persecution - something we could use a little more of these days.

Lauren, Courteney, Reese and Fergie Celebrate Champions

Lauren Conrad, Courteney Cox, Reese Witherspoon and Fergie attened Avon's Champions Who Change Women's Lives celebration at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Reese hosted and Fergie performed at the benefit, which honours those who have fought breast cancer and domestic violence, while Patrick and Jillian Dempsey, Courteney and a darker haired Lauren were on presenting duties. Lauren has revealed she is dressing as a clown for Halloween, and Courteney has revealed her former Friends costar Lisa Kudrow will appear on Cougar Town as a dermatologist. It's great to see stars making time for such good causes.

Celebrity Jewelry for Breast Cancer Awareness

You've probably heard that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which always gives fashion and beauty companies an excuse to release a bunch of pink ribbon-inspired products and donate the proceeds to charity. I'll admit: Even as a giver to breast cancer causes, I know it's easy to get burnt out on all of the stuff. However, there are some great products out there that let you buy something fabulous while also contributing to a cause.

One example: The Young Survivor Collection from Robyn Rhodes. The jeweler, who counts celebrities including Jessica Alba and Eva Longoria as fans, came up with the designs after being approached by Gabrielle Union, when one of the actress's close friends was diagnosed with breast cancer. As a result, 20 percent of the proceeds from the line will go to the Young Survival Coalition nonprofit. Is Denise Richards's Boob-Job Admission TMI?

This week, Denise Richards told Howard Stern that she's had three breast-augmentation surgeries. (Once, twice, three times a lady?) She had her first surgery when she was 19. "I was flat as a board, and I thought 'Whoa, you can just buy them' and stupidly had them done," she said. Unfortunately, they were too big for her frame, so she had them replaced - with even larger ones. She found what she was looking for the third time around, though she now says, "It was a big mistake. Young girls, don't do it!"

I appreciate it when people are open about the work they've had done, if only because I appreciate transparency. But to go on and on about it can be overload. In this case, do you think Denise's admission is spot-on, or is it too much information?

ACTivism: Avon Breast Cancer Walks

It is an unfortunate truth that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. October might be breast cancer awareness month, but the disease still strikes 365 days a year. That is why Reese Witherspoon is working with the Avon Foundation For Women to fight breast cancer.

Fighting this disease is not just for the Hollywood elite. You can make a difference by participating in one of the Avon Breast Cancer Walks. Even their simple slogan - "For two days, we walk as one" - is pretty inspirational. The funds raised by walk participants help medically underinsured women and men receive the screening, support, and treatment they need. Proceeds from the walk also fund research for a cure for breast cancer.

Celebrity Couples Come to Claridge's for the Kids

Several celebrity couples came together for the launch party of the Louis Dundas Centre for Children's Palliative Care at Claridge's last night. Even though his business is feeling the pinch it was the third big event for Gordon Ramsay and Tana this week, having celebrated Simon Cowell's 50th, and attended the Pride of Britain Awards with fellow launch partygoers Emma Bunton and Jade Jones. Geri Halliwell was once again making headlines with her choice of dress, having worn an outfit from 2002 to the Breast Cancer Fashion Show on Wednesday. Other couples at the launch included Elton John, David Furnish, Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar.
