Food Review: Celebration Roast

Surrounded by vegetarians and vegans, the arrival of the holidays always leaves me a little perplexed as to what's best to serve them during a festive meal. I don't want to slight them by giving them a bunch of side dishes, but I am not a fan of Tofurky and Now and Zen's Unturkey. My vegetarian and vegan guests will have the pleasure of eating a Celebration Roast this Thanksgiving. It's a meatless alternative to turkey that omnivores have been known to gobble up.

To hear how it tasted, read more.

Made by the Field Roast Grain Meat Co., the Celebration Roast looks a little like a ham or pork roast because of the appearance of darker outer skin with lighter "meat" on the inside. The "meat" of the roast is made entirely of grain that's been mixed with spices, herbs, lemon, and lentils. The center of the roast is stuffed with a delicious "sausage style stuffing" made up of apples, butternut squash, and mushrooms. As for the sausage flavor you can choose from Lentil Sage or Sundried Tomato, I opted for Lentil Sage. I love that each roast is made by hand, which shows when you are shopping for them - they all look just a tiny bit different.

The roasts come fully cooked and just need to be heated for about 15 minutes in the oven. It has a nice texture that isn't slimy or rubbery like some fake meats, and all the seasonings give it a nice savory flavor. I think the reason the Celebration Roast tastes so good is because it's not aspiring to be something it's not. Instead of trying to be a synthetic meat, the natural flavors and texture of the grains and seasonings are showcased. I'm pretty certain I'll be munching on this in addition to the turkey on Thanksgiving. An added plus is that it tastes good cold and will make a really good sandwich for the day after.

The Celebration Roast comes in two sizes, 1 or 2 pounds ($8 and $16, respectively) and is carried nationwide by Whole Foods. A 4-ounce serving contains 280 calories, 10 grams of fat, 6 grams of fiber, 5 grams of sugar, and 31 grams of protein.

If any of you decide to try the Celebration Roast this holiday season please let me know what you think!

David and His Boys Win Big While Foxy Posh Flies

Romeo, Cruz and Brooklyn all cheered dad on and will have the chance to do it again next weekend in the MLS Cup next Saturday in Seattle. Cruz and David were still showing off similar hairstyles, which Becks styled a little different to stop by a P.S. Arts event yesterday. While her boys were having fun in LA, Victoria Beckham was headed to London where she was spotted at the airport sporting her new wavy hairstyle and a fresh off the runway Louis Vuitton Bag with a fake foxtail. Earlier in the week she and Brooklyn visited underprivileged kids in Kentucky, where she showed off that killer smile we love the chance to see, but now it's back to business in England for Posh.

90210 vs. Melrose Place: Which Was More Scandalous?

This week's 90210 and Melrose Place combo don't have a ton of shocking moments, but it's obvious both shows are gearing up for major stuff to go down. (Like a drug bust, murder arrest, and Heather Locklear, for instance?!) We do, however, get some nice moments between the characters. Teddy, for one, is acting like an angel - although I can't tell if it's sincere, because I've made it a rule not to trust a guy who ties sweaters over his shoulders. And the gang from Melrose have a nice come-together moment around the pool, which I'd like to see more of.

Not that everything is warm and fuzzy. Hardly. There's still scandal to go around, so ready to decide which gave us more gossip-worthy material? Just read more.

90210 point: Navid discovers Jasper selling Adrianna drugs in her car in the school parking lot. Navid calls Adrianna to confront her, but she of course denies his accusations. Jasper also says the story isn't true and threatens Navid in a "hypothetical" way. Like, "hypothetically if I was a drug dealer, you wouldn't want to mess with me, because I know bad people." Real discreet stuff.
Melrose Place counterpoint: The blood tests from last week's discovery of Sydney's murder weapon come back - and Auggie is the guilty party. Auggie might as well be off the show already, because he is nowhere to be found, supposedly on a trip in Mexico. Ella's relieved, Riley has doubts, and Violet continues to defend him, seeing as how they slept together and she's crazy. When she told Riley that she and Auggie were "intimate" with each other, I nearly ralphed.

90210 point: Debbie is in the doghouse with Dixon. He tries to go comfort Sasha after her "miscarriage," and Debbie admits that Sasha faked the pregnancy - and that she hid the truth. Dixon's unreasonably angry with Debbie, telling her "you're not my real mom anyway." Come on, Dixon. Deb doesn't deserve that.
Melrose Place counterpoint: David sneaks over to Michael's house while he's at work and borrows Noah. He takes his little bro to a fair, but things go amiss when Noah climbs a wall and falls. David rushes him to Lauren at the hospital, and she administers treatment - but not before Michael gets wind of everything. He's understandably furious but later tells David that he's glad he cares about Noah. Could this be the start of an actual relationship between the father and son?!

90210 point: Liam is on the rampage after he tells Mr. Matthews that Jen is psycho and Ryan doesn't believe him. He takes his attitude out on Ivy, Teddy, and an entire group of surfers. Later, Liam explains his behavior, opening up to the guys (and Ivy) about his history with Jen, and the entire thing culminates in a cheesy friend speech to take Jen down, complete with a high-five. [eye roll]
Melrose Place counterpoint: Violet is back to blackmailing Michael. This time, we find out that she's wanted for a court trial for previously resisting arrest. She enlists Michael, suggesting that he find her a lawyer in return for her discretion about their one-night stand. He, in turn, threatens her back, telling her that he can make the sentencing go against her unless she erases the sex video. Which she does . . . or so it seems. I'm still not 100 percent sure that it won't pop up later, but the power play between the two of them was an episode highlight for me.

90210: With Silver's half birthday approaching, her mom decides to make up for years of missed celebrations and throw her multiple parties at once, dressing up their entire house in different themes. The whole thing seemed like a stretch - really, Teddy called his dad's set designer friend to rig up the ambiance? - but it was still nice to see her and her mom get their moment together. Unfortunately, at the end of the episode, Silver goes to wake her mom in the morning and realizes that her mom has passed away.
Melrose Place counterpoint: Whoa, whoa, whoa - Ella makes a move on Jonah that's bold even for her. It all starts when she needs him to pose as a publicist at a lunch with a hot new indie director. The director comes on to Ella, and Jonah swoops in to put off his advances by pretending to be her fiance. They share a steamy kiss to be extra-convincing, and sure enough, once the director is out of sight, Ella suggests that the two of them go to a nearby hotel, so Jonah can see what he's been missing. He angrily tosses Ella's advances by telling her he's in love with Riley. You could tell part of her feels hurt by his words - and that part of him doesn't actually mean them.

90210 point: Annie is falling hard for Jasper. Their back and forth "I love yous" were pretty sickening, and she even gets in a sting at Dixon, defending Jasper and telling Dixon he's a bad judge of character because of Sasha. But the most cringe-worthy part is Annie tells Jasper that she wants him to be her first - and they start tossing on the bed as the episode wraps. Oh, Annie - you're so gonna wish you had given it up to Ethan instead.

Melrose Place counterpoint: You saw it coming: Lauren and David finally kiss! David's actually a standup guy this episode by taking care of Noah, but his speech to Lauren about how he wants her to see the best in him was unexpected - and welcome, in my opinion. Lauren of course is hesitant due to her call girl lifestyle, which David still doesn't know about. I just hope they don't let that hold her back too long, so we can explore these two as a couple.

This is tough one to call, since neither show packed a ton of drama, relatively speaking. I'm going to go with Melrose Place though, since we find Auggie's blood on the murder weapon, Ella propositioning Jonah, and David and Lauren locking lips. But would you argue for 90210 instead? I'll agree that it did include some pretty nasty lines, and obviously Silver's storyline with her mom carries some weight.

Let me know your pick in the comments, then head over to the 90210 Superfans group in the Buzz Community to discuss the show in more detail.

Exclusive Interview with St Tropez

I know it's more fashionable to be pale, but come summer I can't help but want to be bronzed. As I'm trying to curb my unhealthy (and ageing) sunbathing habit, I think it's time to reach for the bottle.

Celebrity favourite fake tan, St Tropez, has just been nominated as a ‘Brand to Watch’ in the forthcoming Superbrands 2008/09 awards. St Tropez, was only the second fake tan I ever tried, (the first was a real cheapie and left me looking like a badly glazed piece of steak), and I became a real devotee, especially in my student years, when baring my legs all winter, was de rigueur.

This week, I spoke to Michelle Feeney, CEO of St Tropez, about why we're all faking it now. She shares her insider views on the pale versus tan debate, as well as expert tips on how to get a seamless, healthy glow:

Q: What is it about St Tropez, that makes it such a popular brand?
A: Firstly the brand has a great name - St.Tropez denotes sun, sea, glamour, prestige, and jet-set luxury. It was one of the first self tanning brands to offer high-performance professional products to use at home which did not leave you looking orange and streaky. St Tropez was also one of the first tanning brands to offer salon- professional treatments.

Q: Why do we all want to be sunkissed?
A: Coco Chanel made tanning in the sun fashionable in the 1930s and although culturally we go through trends in fashion (to be pale or tanned) it is still widely recognised that a tan makes a person look and feel better. Also the celebrities are big influencers when it come to the public wanting to look tanned. At St.Tropez we are aiming to make self tanning the fashionable way to tan for this century – it is safe, it makes you look and feel healthy, glamorous and look slimmer!

Just read more for Michelle's views on catwalk beauty trends and her expert tips on how to apply St Tropez:

Q: This Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter, the catwalk models looked paler than ever before. Does this signal the death of the tan?
A: Catwalk fashion is pitched at a very high level and the models used are often ‘unworldly’ looking in appearance. The trends from the runway are influencers, but not definitive guides of 'what's hot'. In twenty years of working within the beauty industry I have never seen 'not being tanned' become a fashion that is widely adopted.

Q: What are your plans for St Tropez in 2009?
A: In 2009 we are launching a total rebrand. Following the shoot of the new image by Solve Sundsbo we are carrying through an upgrade to the brand, including new packaging, ten new products and an entire new approach to visual merchandizing. We recently launched a new counter concept in Liverpool, which has proved highly successful and we will be rolling out this concept in 2009.

In 2009 St.Tropez will define the 'self tan' category and elevate tanning to be a credible global beauty category. Tanning is the new make-up!

Q: What are your tips for a great looking fake tan?
A: For a lasting tan, exfoliate well prior to applying the product. Ensure that you use a moisturiser around the hair line, elbows, knees and wrists and blend the self-tan well into these areas. Wear latex gloves to ensure your hands look perfect. St Tropez must be left on the skin for four hours to allow the colour time to develop to it's optimum. Use St Tropez Body Moisturiser or Tan Intensifier to prolong your tan.

St Tropez is a Superbrand Now

When I think of fake tan (or Victoria Beckham for that matter), I think St Tropez. Such is the power of the self-tanning brand.

St Tropez' s easy to use formula and deep tan, has made it a celebrity favourite, and now it's been nominated as a ‘Brand to Watch’ in the forthcoming Superbrands 2008/09 awards.

Michelle Feeney, CEO of St Tropez, says “We are thrilled to be included as a Superbrands one to watch. Due to increased awareness about sun damage, sunless tanning is becoming a growing category within the beauty industry. St. Tropez has an amazing heritage and brand strength which combined with... a global marketing strategy means we are ready to step up to the ‘super’ status.”

Superbrands commissions independent research, and expert and consumer opinion, to identify the UK’s leading brands. These results appear as an annual ‘Top 500’ lists online and in the national media, in September.

The future is hopefully more brown, than orange.

Trend Alert: Faking a Shorter Style

Faking a shorter haircut by means of skillfully placed hair pins is nothing new. In fact, we saw Rosario Dawson do her own faux-crop late last year, followed by Nicole Kidman's asymmetric version. In recent times, the look has taken on resurgence in popularity, as celebrities have been tricking us out with their own adaptations, giving the appearance of freshly cut locks. Kate Beckinsale's full-in-the-front updo gave the illusion of an angled wedge at the Whiteout premiere; both Jennifer Lopez and Elizabeth Banks opted for wavy, tousled styles; and Kristen Stewart faked us out at the VMAs with her memorable faux bowl cut. It's a great look for the changing season, and for those of us who don't want to sacrifice length. (Learn to do it here.) What do you think of these mock styles?

For Wig or For Real? Take the Quiz

It's not, more often than you might think. From weaves to extensions to outright wigs, can you guess which of my mystery celebs is rocking the hair their mama gave them . . . and who's as fake as her tan?

How Well Did Paula's "Ellen" Wig and Makeup Work?

Last night at the VH1's Divas Live concert, Paula Abdul made an homage to Ellen DeGeneres by dressing up as her and doing some of her signature dance moves on stage. She got pretty detailed with the look, even putting in blue contact lenses. We've made the comparison of other celebrities that look alike, such as Katherine Heigl and Ashley Judd; and there's even lots of stars with lookalike sisters. But when it comes to Paula's take on Ellen, how good do you think her makeup and (fake) hair were, though? Did the makeup artists actually make her look like Ellen, or did it fall a little short?

How Well Did Paula's "Ellen" Wig and Makeup Work?

Yes, it was a humorous interpretation.

She sort of looked like Ellen. It was a decent attempt.

No, this one was a total fail.

Reader Review of the Day: Stila Convertible Color

I love combination lip and cheek colors. There's no better way to get a natural, pretty flush, and that's why I was glad to see reader Medgrl726's smart, informative review of Stila Convertible Color ($25). (Celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman is also a fan.) Medgrl725 tells us:

I'm almost out of my Stila Convertible Color, and felt compelled to talk up its mileage for all this time. The creamy color has rich pigment, so just a dab does the trick on cheeks and lips. I find that it lasts longer when I'm wearing a sweep of powder blush over it, but no powder can fake the beautiful, rich flush this cream produces. It has lasted me a while, so though the price is steep, it's worth it if you crave a high-quality cream blush.

Are you absolutely glowing from your latest blush experience? Or glowering from a not-so-pleasant one? Want to know what other people really think about that new lip and cheek stain you've been coveting? Just click your way to our Product Reviews pages. There are well over 50,000 products to review and hear about other users' experiences with, and members add new ones every day, so there's always more to learn and see.
