Are You Tired of Celebrity Fragrances?

I can barely keep up with all the celebrity fragrances this fall: There's Sarah Jessica Parker Covet, M by Mariah Carey, Britney Spears Believe, Christina Aguilera, Intimately Beckham and Paris Hilton Can Can-to name just a few. Soon, we'll also have new scents from Daisy Fuentes, Kylie Minogue, Naomi Campbell, Celine Dion, Kate Moss, Carmen Electra, Jessica Simpson and Paula Abdul. (And let's not forget Antonio Banderas for the guys!)

Some commenters have said they're sick of celebrity scents, but someone's buying them. Are you excited about these fragrances, or are you over it?

A few years ago, we started seeing more and more celebrities taking over magazine covers and fashion ad campaigns. Now, the thing to do in Hollywood seems to be creating your own fragrance. Patrick Dempsey Talks to Us About His Latest Scent

When Patrick Dempsey launched his first scent, Unscripted, late last year, I have to admit I was skeptical of another celebrity fragrance hitting the market. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the subtle, clean scent, and even Mr. Bella - whose idea of a fun night out involves climbing mountains and camping in the woods sans showers - is a fan.

Patrick has been bitten by the fragrance bug once again. The launch of his latest scent, Patrick Dempsey 2 ($30), pays tribute to the intimacy between two people. (That's his wife in the ad campaign.) Beauty Byte: Paris Hilton's Sixth Scents

The latest celebrity perfume due out next month is from Paris Hilton. Siren is the heiress's sixth scent. It was inspired by fairy-tale mermaids, co-created with world famous nose Honorine Blanc and is licensed by Parlux Fragrances.

If you thought that Paris's other fragrance ads were sexy, get ready to feast your eyes on photos of her wearing a sequin gold tail in front of ancient ruins with flowing and apparently heavy blonde hair.

Siren contains notes of mandarin, apricot nectar, frangipani, honeysuckle, coconut orchid, water lily, vanilla beans, sandalwood and creamy musk. It comes in a glass bottle shaped like a tail of a mermaid with details intended to look like a splash. The collection will contains two eau de parfums and a scented body lotion. I Smell Dead People

If you want to smell like Marilyn Monroe, it's well-known that she was a Chanel No. 5 devotee. But what if you just want to smell like her genetic code? Well, now there's a fragrance out there to help you do it. A company in LA has come out with a line of perfumes called Antiquity that it says are supposed to smell like various deceased stars' DNA.

I, personally, was unaware that my DNA smelled any way. But the company says that it's got a "secret process" using hair strands collected from people like Marilyn, Einstein, Elvis, and a ton of others that it uses to make these scents. Which still doesn't at all explain how you could make a fragrance based on genes. What do you think about this? Does the vagueness, secrecy, and appeal to "science" make it sound like a crock, or do you think there's something to this idea?

Paris Hilton's Can Can: A Blind Sniff Test

One of the challenges in reviewing celebrity perfumes is that it's difficult to ignore your opinion of the famous person behind the juice. Would Lovely Sarah Jessica Parker have been such a runaway hit if, say, Bea Arthur were behind it? (I would so buy a Bea Arthur scent, for the record.) Or would a well-done perfume like Britney Spears' Curious be considered more sophisticated if it weren't connected to a pop singer?

Which brings us to Paris Hilton and her fourth fragrance, Can Can. I normally wouldn't pick up a perfume by Paris; after all, I need my $55 more than she needs it, and I can't imagine telling people that I'm wearing Paris Hilton. But I wondered if my opinion of Paris was clouding my judgment. So to get an honest and fair opinion of Can Can, I set up a blind smell test by inviting other Sugar girls to smell the scent - without knowing its identity. Would they like Paris' perfume if they didn't know who was behind it? To find out, read more.

Yesterday afternoon, I sat in a small room and invited everybody to come in for a sniff. I didn't tell anybody what they were smelling until after they'd shared their opinions, and I remained stoic and neutral. Here's what they had to say:

CitizenSugar liked it; actually, she was the only one of the group who said she'd definitely wear it. "Is this Aquolina Pink Sugar?" she asked.
TeamSugar said it was "overwhelmingly sweet, like smelling cotton candy. It's not a classy or sophisticated fragrance."
GiggleSugar said it was too sweet for her. "I do like it, but I wouldn't wear it," she explained. "It's a very sexy fragrance - like sophisticated cotton candy."
LilSugar said she "kind of liked it," and would wear it if the scent faded a bit.
YumSugar said it was too feminine and girly for her own tastes, but that it was a fine scent. "It smells like sugar - like cotton candy," she said. "I'm not that sweet, but I could see some people in Sugar HQ wearing this."
GeekSugar wasn't a fan. "Maybe it's because I have Skittles in my mouth," she said. "But it's too sweet and candy-ish. It's not awful, but I wouldn't wear it."

So, there you have it. Incidentally, after discovering the perfume's identity, everybody felt that Can Can captured the essence of Paris Hilton. I agree with them; it's fun and flirty, but it's not cloying or juvenile. Ultimately, though, there isn't much substance to the sweetness.

Would You Be Into Kate Moss Hair and Makeup Products?

Kate Moss has been at the center of the modeling world for 20 years, and we've seen her as the face of all sorts of brands, from the prestigious Gucci, Dior, and Louis Vuitton down to drugstore favorite, Rimmel. Recently, the supermodel, who admits she's "not traditionally a beauty" to WWD, has just launched Vintage ($23-$53), a fruity floriental inspired by her love of vintage fashions.

But as you might know, this isn't the first scent we've seen from Kate. Her debut fragrance, Kate, was introduced in 2007. Then came Velvet Hour, followed by the limited-edition Kate Summer Time; and she's not about to stop now. In fact, Kate also has plans to create special makeup collections for Rimmel, and a haircare line with stylist James Brown is in the works. "It’s fun for me," Moss told WWD. "I still model, and I enjoy doing that as well. Working on the creative process is really interesting for me because I do know what I like, so it’s fun for me to realize that it becomes part of you. It’s not just putting your name on something; it’s about being very involved in it." What do you think about more Kate Moss beauty lines? Are you intrigued or apathetic?

The New Harajuku Lovers Are Sunny and Sweet

Fans of Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Lovers fragrances should love this one. After the success of her Snow Bunnies flanker dolls, Gwen's putting out five new, bikini-clad versions for next Spring. Each has a new scent that matches the personality and fragrance family of the original doll, but adds lighter, more summery notes. I'm loving their cute little belly buttons and adorable pedicures, and while I wasn't crazy about the actual fragrances the first time around, I'm willing to keep an open mind about these new scents. What do you think? Will you be running out to pick these up, or not so much?

Fragrance Review: Jessica Simpson Fancy

From country singer to pop star to hair extension creator, this multi-talented lady has done it all. Her latest venture takes her into the fragrance world. When I first heard of the aromas featured in Jessica Simpson's perfume, Fancy ($49-$59), I suddenly had the urge to make a sundae. Apricot, pear, toasted almonds, caramel? Yep, my teeth started aching just thinking about it.

The name of the perfume didn't raise my hopes; when something's described as "fancy," that usually means it's just the opposite. But upon experiencing my first whiff of the scent, I was pleasantly surprised. The aroma isn't as sticky-sweet as I envisioned - it's more sophisticated than the overly literal smells of Jess's earlier Dessert line. I loved Fancy's lightness of apricot and pear notes; and the vanilla helped to add a subtle balance to the blend. It's warm and inviting, and considering how men seem to go bananas for vanilla, it's a good first-date fragrance.

Although I'm impressed by the thought behind the blend, the floral notes - which include jasmine and gardenia - are just a little too, well, fancy for me. I like a hint of dirtiness in my fragrance, but if you love sweet, warm blends, Jessica's perfume is worth a sniff. Even though it's too vanilla for me (take that either way you like) it's pleasant and long-lasting, and it's bound to be a guilty pleasure of anyone who's normally opposed to the idea of celebrity fragrance in general.
