I have to admit that when Victoria Beckham went for the chop this week, I was a tiny bit tempted to follow suit. Her pixie cut looks so fun and flattering. Friends told me that when Lily Allen dyed her hair pink it suddenly made the colour look oh-so-desirable, whilst Daisy Lowe's fringe and hat accessorising has been widely copied on the streets of Shoreditch this summer. It's important to make sure a hair cut and colour suits your face shape though, as what looks cool on a celebrity may not work on everyone.

Meanwhile Alexa Chung's messy and simple long bob always looks cute and if I weren't so obsessive about growing my hair I might even ask 'for an Alexa' at my local hairdressers.

Hair Color Dos and Don'ts: Must-Have Tips For Perfect Results

When it comes to at-home hair color, all products are NOT created equal. Knowing what to look for can make the difference between so-so and stunning. Here are some secrets, including special tips from celebrity hair colorist and L’Oréal Paris expert Christophe Robin, for achieving beautiful, professional-looking results on your own.

DO choose a shade that complements your skin tone and eyes. “If you have fair skin and blue, green or gray eyes, your complementary shades will have ash or beige tones,” Christophe advises. “If your skin tone is golden, olive or dark and you have dark eyes, your complementary shades will have gold or red hues.” Have characteristics of both warm and cool tones? “Go with whichever is your preference.”

DO stick close to your own hair color if you want a subtle change. “If you’re not sure which shade to choose, go just 1 or 2 levels lighter or darker than your natural color,” says Christophe. “This will give you a noticeable change that’s not too dramatic and is easy to maintain.”

DO pick a product that’s specifically formulated to cover gray hair, which can resist coloring.

DO use products specifically designed to preserve your color, like Vive Pro Color Vive Shampoo and Conditioner for Color-Treated Hair.

DO choose a gentle formulation and indulge in regular deep-conditioning treatments.

DON’T be afraid to take a risk. Hair color offers a fun way to express your personality and experiment with a new style or attitude. “When a woman goes darker with her color, she’ll feel stronger,” Christophe notes. “When she goes lighter, she’ll feel more sexy and sensual.”

DON’T skimp on time. You might be tempted to cut corners to save a few minutes, but resist the urge. It’s crucial to allow the proper amount of time for each step - especially when you are going for a dramatic color change “You can’t rush hair color,” Christophe cautions.

DON’T judge a box by its cover. Although it’s a common misconception, you shouldn’t expect your hair color to turn out exactly like the model’s on the box. “Your personal result will be determined by the condition of your hair, your current hair color and the shade you’ve selected,” says Christophe.

DON’T overdo it. Coloring too often can compromise hair’s health and yield uneven results. A touch-up every four to six weeks is all that’s required to keep your shade looking fresh and vibrant.

DON’T forget the SPF. You protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun, so why let your hair take the heat? “The sun is the number one enemy of color-treated hair,” says Christophe. Use shampoos and conditioners that contain UV filters to block damaging rays and prevent fade-out.

It's been the week of the haircut, what with Victoria Beckham's gamine crop and Agyness Deyn's new sleek bob. Now Kate Moss has gone for the chop with this super-messy mid-length cut. Kate was showing off her hair at Punk last night, as she stepped out with boyfriend Jamie Hince.

Kate's trademark blonde locks look like they've been lopped off with blunt cut scissors, giving this style an insouciant edge. The choppy, messy ends and fluffy texture also add a youthful vibe, although it looks like the kind of hairstyle you go for when your hairdresser demands you chop off the ends due to over-styling damage. This mussed-up do is certainly rock n roll and the new shorter length draws attention to her perfect features.

Agyness Shows Off New Bob

Just when we thought that New York Fashion Week couldn't show us any more hair surprises, Agyness Deyn stole the limelight from Victoria Beckham by unveiling her brand new bob yesterday at the shows. It's typical of on-trend Agyness to have updated her look, just when it seemed everyone was copying her crop.

This new, short, yet sharp cut looks striking with Agyness' bleach blonde colour and has a retro feel that brings to mind the flapper girls of the 20's. It's also more groomed, feminine, shiny and polished than her previous spiky, street-chic cut.

The haircut debuted at the Michael Kors show and was teamed with matte red lipstick and dark brows. I really like it, however, I'm sure it won't be long before she changes it again - the the girl does love to experiment.

Haircuts To Flatter Your Face Shape: Part IV, Square Faces

You may covet your favorite celeb's hairstyle, but if the 'do doesn't fit your face shape, you're likely to be disappointed. Hence, Fabsugar's four-part series on the haircuts that best flatter your face. Welcome back to our fourth and final installment: square faces. If you have a square-shaped face, you share your facial structure with Demi Moore, Mandy Moore, Sandra Bullock, and Rosario Dawson. Having a square face means that you have a wide hairline and an equally wide, angular jaw. The goal with a square face is to soften your hairline with cuts that incorporate bangs, layers, and your hair's natural texture.

It also means that you have lots of flexibility in the choosing which length you want to wear your hair. Almost any length is flattering. For example, you could try a long, sleek style with layers that start at the jawline and continue downward, like Demi's above. Or, you could just as easily go for a short and spiky cut with choppy ends.

Another option is to try wearing your hair in loose layery waves.

Keep in mind that single-length bobs and straight-across bangs aren't great looks for you. They will just make your face look more square. Or, you can always throw in the towel altogether and opt for Demi's G.I. Jane buzzcut look.

Trend Alert: Faking a Shorter Style

Faking a shorter haircut by means of skillfully placed hair pins is nothing new. In fact, we saw Rosario Dawson do her own faux-crop late last year, followed by Nicole Kidman's asymmetric version. In recent times, the look has taken on resurgence in popularity, as celebrities have been tricking us out with their own adaptations, giving the appearance of freshly cut locks. Kate Beckinsale's full-in-the-front updo gave the illusion of an angled wedge at the Whiteout premiere; both Jennifer Lopez and Elizabeth Banks opted for wavy, tousled styles; and Kristen Stewart faked us out at the VMAs with her memorable faux bowl cut. It's pretty safe to say that last night's 2009 MTV VMAs were one of the most entertaining in recent history. You had your Kanye outburst, Pink's Cirque du Soleil-style act, Lady Gaga's bloody performance, and cast members from Twilight taking the stage to premiere the New Moon trailer. (And in case you didn't hear the buzz, it was also a night for Kristen Stewart to cozy up with costar Robert Pattinson backstage.) At first, it looked like Kristen had chopped her Joan Jett-esque locks, but alas, it was just the mastery of Pantetne celebrity stylist Hallie Bowman, who created this edgy, faux-bowl-cut style with a modern feel. Now, I know many of you might not be fans of the throwback look, but if you're bored with your style and don't want to cut several inches to achieve a new look, this technique might just work for you.
