Coco Before Chanel

My friend Fab said she enjoyed this look at the fashion icon's life in her pre-label days, so I'm dying to get a glimpse of Coco Before Chanel at home - in the comfort of my very un-glamorous sweatpants, of course. Amelie actress Audrey Tautou stars as Gabrielle Chanel, the seamstress who used her handiwork (and her tenacity) to create a fashion empire. The Oscars have already recognized the film's pretty costuming, but I'm equally anxious to watch it for her love affairs and for Chanel herself, a total rebel and an incredible plum female role.

Extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes and an audio commentary.

Law Abiding Citizen

Warning: Beware if you have a queasy stomach. Law Abiding Citizen is a thriller about the justice system, but Saw-like killing sprees abound. The film centers on Gerard Butler as a family man who goes on a slasher bender after his daughter and wife are murdered. Jamie Foxx costars as the lawyer he's targeting for revenge. For the sake of full disclosure, I was not a fan when the movie came to theaters, but you may want to consider it if you love Gerard Butler - or just pure, bloody entertainment.

Good Hair

Comedian Chris Rock serves as your tour guide on this inside look into the world of hair, and the extensive lengths women (and men) will go to for the ideal 'do. Good Hair gives us several eye-opening factoids about the nature of the industry (including a shocking relaxer demo) and way more laughs than I expected. While Rock doesn't delve into a few of the subjects as much as I would like, his brand of funny gives a new slant to the documentary genre that's refreshing.

Extras include an audio commentary with Chris Rock.

Fab Blab: Karl Lagerfeld on the Crazy Fast Fashion System, Twitter, and More!

Fresh off showing his arctic-inspired Fall '10 Chanel collection at Paris Fashion Week, Karl Lagerfeld took time out to chat with WWD about the ever-evolving fashion system, Twitter, and online shopping. When asked about his thoughts on the current fashion industry, the Kaiser responded, "We are in the middle of change, like the movies changed. There will be a change from two-dimensions to three-dimensions, just as films went from silent to talking. This is a very interesting period. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. These are our times, and if you start to fight against them, you are lost. You are a loser or a has-been." Harsh, but true.

On the nonstop pressure of designing collection after collection: "We live in a speedy world. We are here to make the products light and modern. If speed is too much for you, don’t complain. That’s our world . . . Doing fashion today is like being a racecar driver."

On online shopping: "I don’t believe in selling luxury online because shopping is pleasant. E-commerce deprives people of the pleasure of shopping in beautiful shops. And you know, fashion is not only what the clothes are made of - it’s the feeling of luxury where you shop, how you shop, the way parcels are beautifully wrapped. (Online) there are too many fakes, too many copies."

On not utilizing Twitter or any other social media outlets: "It’s not because I want to be cut off from the world, but because I have different priorities. I like to do everything myself. I know pretty well about dressmaking - a technique that is difficult to get, as you know. My eyes are open, but they are not limited to a screen. For me, the world is a huge screen. That’s how I see it."

On reworking the fashion show calendar: "They should do men and women together [in January and June]. The men, why they are so early? Men’s clothes are much easier to produce than women’s clothes. So why don’t they do it all together? That would be wonderful."

When it comes to movies, I'm a sucker for beautiful sets and stunning costumes. That's partially why I'm so excited about seeing the biopic about Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's early years, Coco Avant Chanel. Starring Audrey Tautou as well as many fabulous costumes, which were created by Catherine Leterrier, this film opens in the US in mid-September. I was so taken with the costumes that I decided to see how I could translate Leterrier's lovely creations to the home world.

MTV Movie Awards: Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller made her MTV appearance looking playful in a sea green Swarovski-encrusted mini from her Twenty8Twelve line and strappy metallic sandals by Nicholas Kirkwood. Check out how the long sleeves and slightly poufed shoulders add interest while a white patent Chanel clutch lends a sleek touch - you can't deny that lovely smile. Drama aside, do you love her look?

First Look: Coco Chanel on Lifetime

With the fashion world abuzz at New York Fashion Week right now, it seems an apt time for Lifetime to premiere its look at the life of one of fashion's true icons: Coco Chanel. Coco Chanel stars Shirley MacLaine as the legendary designer (and Barbora Bobulova as the young Coco) who began life in a French orphanage and worked her way up through the fashion world, ultimately bringing us classic suits, the little black dress, and a perfume that's endured for decades.

Lifetime calls Chanel "a glamorous woman who was hard to love and harder to ignore," and that comes through in this trailer. Yes, there's the obligatory breathless "fashion! is! my! life!" declaration, but there are also some great scenes of MacLaine's Coco berating a woman for wearing a subpar outfit and literally ripping the skirt off her body. Oh, if only she could bring her sharp tongue to the Project Runway stage!

The movie premieres this Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. To watch the trailer, read more.

Fab Flash: Karl Lagerfeld to Debut Silent Coco Movie

This week another film about Coco Chanel will be released but this time from the heart of Chanel itself. Creative director Karl Lagerfeld has created a silent movie about Coco starring model Edita Vilkeviciute as the young designer.

It will be screened on Wednesday night, along with a showing of Chanel’s Paris-Moscow pre fall ready-to-wear collection. Karl told WWD, “Today, people are ready for silent movies again, as they spend time - hours, I would say - looking at text messages and e-mails. I always loved silent movies.”

As Karl is very protective of the clothes he didn't want just anybody starring in the movie. Instead he chose from his close entourage including Brad Koenig and his bodyguard/private secretary Sébastien Jondeau. The actual workers from Chanel atelier star in the movie as Karl doesn't trust extras ("I cannot take extras. They don’t know how to touch the clothes.")

It took two days to make the mini movie and judging by the images released today it's going to be very artistic.

Sneak Peek! Coco Before Chanel

You saw the movie trailer, now it's time to get up close and personal with scenes from the upcoming Coco Before Chanel. Fun fact: Keira Knightley was originally offered the role of Madame Chanel, but French actress Audrey Tatou ended up the star. But if you ask Karl, he prefered Penelope Cruz. No matter, because judging from the movie stills, Tatou is exceptional at portraying fashion's most celebrated designer. The way she wears that bowler hat, the pearls, that signature Chanel tweed is magical. I can't wait to see her come to life on-screen. A US date has yet to be announced, but the film debuts in France and Belgium Apr. 22. Get a sneak peek now.

FABTV: Coco Avant Chanel Movie Trailer

After much anticipation, the first Coco Avant Chanel movie trailer starring our fabulous Fabcon, Audrey Tautou, has finally released. The preview is in French, but that doesn't mean we can't come to our own conclusions about the plot. We do know it focuses on her earlier life, growing up and the budding stages of the house of Chanel. Judging from the steamy love scenes, crazy fights, and decadent clothes, I gather this to be an amazing period romance filled with action, love, and betrayal. But that's just my opinion. The film premieres in France April 22 and a US release date is still to be decided. Enjoy!

Keira Knightley's New Chanel Ads... and Movie

I just found some new Chanel ads starring Keira Knightley, and if she isn't the perfect modern-day face of Chanel, I don't know who would do it better!

I know that you're split on whether she's a more fitting model for Coco Mademoiselle than Kate Moss was, but you've got to admit, the girl looks amazing here. I love the soft pink lip, which makes her look very appropriate for this legendary design house, n'est-ce pas?

Keira Knightley will star as Coco Mademoiselle in a new PR movie for the Chanel perfume. The British actress, dressed in a red chiffon dress by Karl Lagerfeld, will play a mysterious star in a glamorous movie directed by Joe Wright.

The "PR movie" (read: advertisement that will probably be beautiful nonetheless) is due in September. What do you think of Keira here-is it hats off to her? (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

BellaSugar's Insider Look Into Chanel, Part V: Jacques Helleu's Movie

The last surprise on my Parisian Chanel Excursion was going to Chanel Corporate and meeting with their Artistic Director, Jacques Helleu. Since joining the company in 1956, he has been responsible for making all of the mini Chanel films, choosing the muses for beauty and fragrance, overseeing all packaging designs and creating the striking J12 watch.

As we sat inside the office of such a distinguished man, we watched three versions of the latest Coco Mademoiselle film, and then were treated to a question-and-answer session. Although, most of us were too timid to ask more than one question-you should have heard the way he spoke to his wife when she called.

A couple of weeks ago I showed you some behind-the-scenes footage from the one-minute movie, and here is is the final cut. It was was directed by Joe Wright who most recently directed Keira Knightley in Atonement. As you watch, notice the symbols from Coco Chanel's apartment and the perfume bottle-which is the same shape as the parameters of Place Vendome. I think you'll really appreciate how all of the details come together. Enjoy the show!
