Gear Review: Radiance Jacket by Mountain Hardwear

If you are looking forward to Winter but not the cold that accompanies it, Mountain Hardwear has constructed a jacket for you. The Radiance Jacket ($230) is pre-wired for the Ardica Moshi Power System ($145).

When fully charged, the battery powered energy pack will keep you warm for a little over eight and a half hours when set on the low setting and three hours when set for high. The heater fits into an internal pocket in the back of the jacket that sits between your scapula with extra heating coils in the front just above the pockets. Simply pressing the black button on the top of the jacket turns on the heater. The contrast between the lightweight jacket and the stiff battery is quite noticeable though. Known for their lightweight yet warm jackets (I ski in an older version of the company's Flip Jacket), the power system makes the jacket heavy.

I sat in my cold house (why houses in Northern California aren't well insulated is beyond me) and cranked the jacket to the high setting and was quite toasty. I was sweating in minutes. I have no doubt it would keep me warm on the slopes or sitting at a snowy football game, I am not sure I want to pay $375 to stay warm. Think of all the hot chocolate you could buy, even overpriced ski lodge cocoa, with that kind of dough.

The left pocket of the jacket houses a USB cable, they come with a variety of adapters making it useful for charging your iPhone, iPod, camera, or BlackBerry. The Ardica System takes more than a few hours to fully charge, but it can fully charge your phone multiple times once it's charged.

I think the concept of a warming jacket that helps you stay wired (or at least charged) is cool, but I am not completely sold on the technology. While the jacket is cute and streamlined - it would fit well under a shell to keep for added wind and water protection - but if it is so cold that I need a heater to keep me warm riding up a mountain, I might just opt for a lodge day. Operation Top Knot: Cheers to Military Mamas

Every mother needs a helping hand every now and then. As a woman with two healthy children, a doting husband, a nanny and a gaggle of girlfriends to support me, it's tough to complain about the overwhelming demands of motherhood, but still, I do. Try being an expectant military wife whose husband is deployed. While some ladies sit at home fretting about the nursery decor, she sits up at night praying for his safe return. For many, the dilemma of the day is, "Which stroller should I buy?" Somewhere on a military base, the soldier's wife debates on who will help her through labor as her beloved flies a fighter jet continents away.

Thankfully, there are groups of generous people who take the time to honor the wives of soldiers (or the enlisted ladies themselves) and their impending arrival into motherhood. A project of nonprofit Soldiers' Angels, Operation Top Knot threw a baby shower for 32 pregnant military ladies in Las Vegas. They received handmade baby gifts of blankets, hats, and booties and celebrated the special occasion with cake, chocolate, games and of course, each other. Listen To Robbie's New Single "Bodies" Plus A Video Clip!

Robbie Williams was in a playful mood as he dropped into the Chris Moyles show on Radio One this morning, saying he was happy to be back and be a popstar again: "It really genuinely feels so good. I get to wear jackets and not eat chocolate and eat porridge every day." He sounded happy as he joked with the team, saying he was feeling "really really good. I've been a food ninja for the last few months... [which means you] cut out everything that you like."

Robbie also spilled on his relationship with Ayda Field who he's been with for "three whole years", and he confessed their embarassing pet names for each other - he calls her "boozy woo woos" and she calls him "tickles a noo noo". He premiered the single "Bodies", saying "be prepared for something cosmic to happen to you while this single is playing" and afterwards Chris declared it "a grower", to Robbie's dismay and amusement.

Robbie also mentioned he's been in a lot of contact with the Take That boys, particularly Gary Barlow, and Chris asked him about the documentary, to which Robbie said: "It was sad when I watched it, I wish I had been there... The production people knew I wouldn't be there. If I'd known that was the set up to the end then I would have gone." He then raved about their live show, saying he fancied doing a reunion and that he was excited about it. Chris asked him if he wanted to start something he couldn't stop, and Robbie responded, "...you've planted a seed of doubt now. I'm not joining Take That then, that's official."

On his typical LA day:
"Wake up, I have a vanilla soy latte from coffee bean... someone brings it to my bedside. I then have porridge with honey, then go on the internet... I go downstairs to watch football, three games in a row, the missus likes football so it's all good..."

On his music:

He also talked about album Reality Killed The Video Star and producer Trevor Horn's contribution to it, "The demos were good to go and he added 30 or 40% on top of that." Finally they discussed Robbie's old writing partner Guy Chambers, and Chris asked about the rumours of bad feeling between them. Robbie responded, "We're mates, there's no bad feeling. It's all good, and I love him and I love his family... I'd write with him again."

Chocolate Wii Controller Sweetens Gaming

Meet the Newest Dining Hotspot: The Ballpark

Masaharu Morimoto isn't the only celebrity chef to be serving stepped-up stadium food at future Yankees games. As part of the stadium's new Legends Culinary Series, at select games, famous New York chefs will serve up signature dishes at the stadium's Legends Suite Club.

In addition to Iron Chef Morimoto, the star-studded lineup of chefs will include Alex Guarnaschelli of The Cooking Loft and Butter restaurant, April Bloomfield of The Spotted Pig, and Sirio Maccioni of Le Cirque. Chocolatier Godiva will also be on hand to create signature chocolate desserts.
Food Network has announced that it, too, will be rolling out its first-ever food stands. The stands will feature "quality takes on classic" foods that incorporate "the ethnic cuisines of New York City, Food Network's hometown," according to a statement from the network. Hot dogs, burgers, and fries will be in the mix - but so will Puerto Rican pork sandwiches and Chinese cold noodles.

Since variety is the spice of life, and because dining options at sports events do seem to be trending toward the upscale, I suppose premium dining at the stadium makes business sense. PartySugar and I both agree, however, that canapés can never take the place of chili dogs at the ballpark. What do you think? Would you want to eat gourmet cuisine at a sporting event?
