Kristin Chenoweth was thrilled and tearful as she took to the podium to accept her Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy award for <b>Pushing Daisies</b> while Toni Collette won Best Actress in a Comedy for her amazing turn in <b>The United States Of Tara</b>. Leighton Meester, Blake Lively and Ricky Gervais were among those presenting awards, while Justin Timberlake won for his guest spot on <b>Saturday Night Live</b>. Were you guys surprised by this year's picks? (Check out all my <a href="http://www.buzzsugar.com/tag/2009+Primetime+Emmy+Awards+Poll/slides" >Emmy polls here</a>.) I thought the show started out pretty unexpectedly when underdogs Kristin Chenoweth and Toni Collete took home trophies, and there were a few other surprises along the way. Towards the end, though, the big wins seemed pretty predictable with <a href="http://buzzsugar.com/tags/mad+men" >Mad Men</a> for drama, <a href="http://buzzsugar.com/tags/30+rock" >30 Rock</a> for comedy - no surprises there.</p> <p>I had a lot of favorite moments of the night - more on those later - but mainly, I just enjoyed seeing Neil Patrick Harris as host. The couple went out to lunch at a restaurant called Bubby's in New York, with Ed clutching a CD by <a href="http://www.myspace.com/plastiscine" target="_blank">Plastiscines</a> in his hand. In a departure from his role as Chuck, Ed's appeared in US TV series <b>Californication</b>, playing a rather different lad - a student of David Duchovny's character. It was a seemingly conclusive episode, but a hint of Georgina and the introduction of a new male character provides a brief insight in to the third season. Last night the UK premiere of <b>Gossip Girl</b> hit our screens, with a first episode full of sex (well, a lot of almost-sex), drugs and fashionable clothing. It's been a while since I watched this first episode of the show, so seeing it last night was fantastic – I really enjoyed it yet again. <b>The OC</b> creator Josh Schwartz has the gift of making rich American teens so intriguing. All those beautiful people too – seriously, shouldn't there be at least one ugly friend with money? I guess Chuck Bass is ugly on the inside. Anyhow, I can't wait to hear what you thought of last night's debut, but first I'll give you a quick rundown of my thoughts and we can see if we agree. </p> <p><center><span class="inline left"></span></center></p> <p>Now, I knew the soundtrack would be good considering how many artists <b>The OC</b> introduced me to, but still, how great is it? The songs are relatively old now as we're watching the show months after it debuted in the States, but it definitely made me rediscover some songs I loved last year. A bit of JT, and that amazing tune from Peter, Bjorn and John right at the start? Fabulous. <a href="http://www.itv.com/Drama/contemporary/GossipGirl/Playlist/default.html" target="_blank">Here's some of the songs from last night's episode</a>, I highly recommend The Pierces too. </p> <p>How did you find the narration? Did Kristen Bell's smug voice annoy you a little? Or do you love having someone describing the ins and outs of the Upper East Side to you? I have to say that sometimes it grates on me a bit, but it's so ingrained in the plot and the name of the show that it's pretty necessary. Also, I have a feeling I'll be signing off many things with "XOXO" in the future... </p> <p>For more of my thoughts, and a recap, just read more</p> <p>If you need a little memory jog before commenting, here's what happened:</p> <p>Blonde, beautiful Serena van der Woodsen is back in Manhattan from boarding school, and the word spreads via the Gossip Girl blog on all kinds of mobile devices. Meanwhile, the less well-off Dan and Jenny Humphries (aka the tiny Cindy Lou Who from <b>The Grinch</b>!) are shipped back from visiting their Mum's house to their Dad in Manhattan. Dan has loved Serena from a distance for a long time. Enter classic brunette Blair Waldorf (Serena's ex-BFF) and her bitchy Mum. And here's her boyfriend Nate – he's good looking in an obvious way, but I think he gets better looking as the series goes on with a more rugged edge and a different haircut. </p> <p>Then there's Chuck. Oh, evil Chuck... I think it puts it lightly to say he's a 'bad boy' – he's the baddest of boys. With a rather eccentric wardrobe. At this stage of the programme I was thinking most of the characters seem really unlikeable, and you might think the same. But as in most TV shows, you will warm to them, layers will be peeled off and circumstances will arise that make you understand <i>some</i> of them, and their characteristics. Although in the case of Chuck, you'll probably just end up loving to hate him (as well as giggling at what he's wearing...). So there's a party at Blair's house, and Serena makes her entrance. Just as Blair and Nate are stripping down in the bedroom. Nate immediately gets dressed to go out and see her, leaving Blair a little miffed.</p> <p>How about those parents? Rufus Humphries (Dan's dad) is a slightly-past-it rocker who seemed to have a vaguely successful career, what with being featured in Rolling Stone magazine. Could he be a younger version of Sandy Cohen? If so, Serena's mom Lily (Kelly Rutherford) reminds me of a slightly sterner Kirsten Cohen. </p> <p>Speaking of family, Dan's little sister Jenny is attempting to weave her way in to the cool circle using her artistic talent to get an invite for the "Kiss On The Lips" party. The power struggle between Blair and Serena outside on the steps made me wonder if these two will ever be friends again. There's so much going on there, and later we found out that Serena hadn't even told Blair she was leaving for boarding school. Poor Blair – a mean Mum and a bad best friend, after all, Nate and Serena slept together at a wedding, leading to Serena's disappearance. And the person no-one would ever want to share their secrets with (except Nate) – Chuck – knows about it.</p> <p>Chuck and Serena's chat in the bar and the kitchen is so uncomfortable, and really shows how dangerous and manipulative Chuck can be. Meanwhile Nate tells Blair about what happened before Serena went away and it breaks Blair's heart. Chuck tries to use the information he knows to have his way with Serena, so she kicks him in a place guys don't like to be kicked. Rightfully so. And as she's rushing out she bumps into the pining Dan, who pines from a distance a little more.</p> <p>Nate wants to take a break from Blair, but gets pressure to stay with her from his Dad, who wants to do a business deal with Blair's Mum. What a happy relationship this is going to be. And then comes Dan's unsuspecting 'Knight in Shining Armour' moment, as he became Serena's saviour out of circumstance. Which lead to him finally getting a date with her! Hurrah – something good is happening! </p> <p>Back in the land of the not-so-happy, Blair and Nate are trying to stay civil in their relationship, but Blair's controlling tendencies (although who can blame her following his confession?) start to grate on Nate. And how about that flirty tension between Dan's dad Rufus and Serena's mum Lily? Interesting.</p> <p>The party begins and Chuck has his beady eyes on Jenny, "I love freshmen, they're so..." "Fresh?" Oh no. Meanwhile, Dan is adorably charming with Serena and all is going well. Superb! But naive young Jenny actually goes off with Chuck on her own, to the roof. She texts Dan to let him know she's in trouble and Dan rushes to the party with Serena. Her appearance causes quite a stir and multiple mobiles beep and vibrate with this news. Chuck gets very close to committing a crime on the roof, but Dan and Serena burst out there in the nick of time and Chuck gets injured again, this time by Dan. Chuck's obviously a guy very used to getting his way. Ugh. And he vows revenge...</p> <p>So that was the first episode! Done and dusted. What did you think? Who are you crushing on? Never fear, the first season of <a href="/tag/gossip+girl" ><b>Gossip Girl</b></a> came out on DVD in the UK last week, whetting my appetite for series two (alongside all the photos from <a href="http://www.instyle.co.uk/instyleuk/parties/party/0,,20221246,00.html" target="_blank">last week's premiere party</a> in the US). Looking back on it all, I can't believe they managed to fit so much scandal, intrigue and dastardly Chuck into just 18 episodes (thanks to the WGA strike) – but then I remembered, this is all from those bods behind <a href="/tv/the+oc" ><b>The OC</b></a> – a show with a breakneck pace that's hard to explain to a non-viewer. Just watch the first two episodes of the Californian teen drama again and you'll swear that's enough storylines for a season!</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <p>But enough about <b>The OC</b>, <b>GG</b> held me captivated with all the glossy goings on in NYC as you can tell <a href="http://uk.popsugar.com/tag/gossip+girl" >from my weekly recaps of the first season</a> as they aired in the UK. </p> <p>The main highlight for me was watching Chuck go from plain old evil in the first episode to being dastardly with an added bonus of attention-grabbing dress sense by the finale – so much fun. Blair and Serena have outfits you'll lust after, hair you'll hanker for and boys you might want for yourself. Yet you still end up liking them, or at least picking Team Serena or Team Blair in their many disagreements! Decked out in designer wares, Blair is deliciously bitchy, Serena and Dan team up to be a frustrating but nice enough couple, Nate goes from boring and beige to handsome when a little ruffled, and little Jenny shows many shades, from naive to controlling. While they've failed to really get a really likable Sandy and Kirsten Cohen-style parent in the mix, Lily van der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey are both nice enough, whereas Blair's Mum and Nate's parents are mainly there to cause problems for their teenage offspring.</p> <p>For the rest of my <b>Gossip GIrl</b> boxset review, just read more</p> <p>The music is great too, as you can expect from an awesome supervisor like Alexandra Patsavas, who brings in bands like The Pierces and The Virgins – I can't tell you how many bands this woman has introduced me to via the shows she sources tracks for like <b>The OC</b> and <b>Grey's Anatomy</b>. There's also two haunting music videos from The Pierces amongst the extras on the DVD set.</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span>So what else is featured among the extras? Well, deleted scenes reveal heavier hints at Blair's eating disorder, Rufus has some throwback habits from his rock-star days, there's a hint Jenny might have actually learned something from her moments of madness in the series, and a line when I'm pretty sure Vanessa refers to herself as a hooker.</p> <p>Featurettes include a look at how <b>GG</b> went from the series of novels to screen, including interviews with the original author Cecily Von Ziegasar, creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and the actors. We find out that visa issues threatened Ed Westwick's role in the series, and they liked him so much that they moved Chuck from a supporting role to a main member of the cast. </p> <p>FabUK fans will love the looks at the fashion in "Gossip Girl Couture", there's a closer look at "A Gossip Girl Wedding", a downloadable audio book of the original novel read by Christina Ricci, two music videos and a Gag Reel. </p> <p>It's a great boxset for any fan of the show – seeing Leighton Meester interviewed makes me love her even more, she's so adorable, and Ed Westwick speaking in his normal British accent is always awesome. It's fun to see their auditions, and also to see how much Penn Badgley swears in the gag reel – wow, does he kiss Blake Lively with that mouth?! It was a chilly night outside the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the ladies <a href="http://uk.fashion.popsugar.com/slides/tag/2008+National+Television+Awards+poll" >in their glam frocks</a> were rushing down the red carpet to get in from the cold. One person who took her time though, was Davina McCall. She stopped to answer a few questions before the ceremony and talked acting, all things <a href="/tag/big+brother" ><b>Big Brother</b></a>, and <a href="http://uk.popsugar.com/2440695" >the BBC controversy</a>. Davina was animated, so friendly and enthusiastic when chatting to me last night, and her hubby Matthew was stood by her side watching proudly. Here's what she had to say:</p> <p><span class="inline left"></span></p> <ul> <li><b>On Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross:</b> "Lets all just get over it. I haven't heard it myself, but I think a lot of people are passing judgment without having heard it, and I think it's important that we hear what they said and how it was meant before we complain. I think we've got a culture of complaining sometimes and... I've only read it. On paper it looks pretty bad. but a friend of mine who's heard it said 'you know they really didn't mean it that badly, please go and listen to it'. So I said OK, and I'll go and listen to it tonight. I'm not sure if the apology was <i>quite</i> heartfelt enough, but again I'm slightly inclined to forgive them - they're comedians - but I think they need to do a bit more of a heartfelt apology and then I'm over it. We still want them around! Personally, I'm not that keen on comedy at somebody else's expense, but they are funny, those guys, and you can't deny that."</li> <li><b>On E4 series Dead Set:</b> "If I had a list of ten things to do before I die, being a zombie would be on there."</li> <li><b>On acting:</b> "Obviously I don't act, and I was [doing this scene where I was] falling and I thought 'there's nothing I can do about it, I'm falling this way I can't stop myself' so I just did it. Jaime Winstone said 'I'd copy that.'" I'd love some old hip hop star like Flavor Flav or Chuck D, someone renegade, do you know what I mean?!"</li> <li><b>Her Christmas plans:</b> "We're going to Matthew's mum and dad in America, with all my kids and the cousins."</li> <li><b>On the sticking power of Big Brother:</b> "I think it could just go on and on. I'm not [going to leave]. I just want to see brilliant entertaining people that are layered, you know, you pull back the layers and they're more interesting and more interesting, and you're still getting great conversations right at the end of the series. Hopefully he learned his lesson as he got caught in every single lie he told. Maybe he's just naive, and I know he's just trying to stop people getting hurt but... just, stop!</li> <li>New entrant Vanessa is totally rocking a Lily Allen look with the sportswear, neon colours, and big gold earrings.</li> <li>Ah, scandal in the Archibald household, things got almost <a href="/tag/skins" ><b>Skins</b></a>-esque when the cocaine came into view. I wasn't too keen on the narration from gossip girl at the start of the series, but she has definitely grown on me. With all the complications of the plot sometimes it's a useful tool to progress the story and disseminate information.</li> <li><a href="htp://buzzsugar.com/tv/america's+next+top+model" >ANTM</a> fans, did you notice cycle 7 winner CariDee English on Chuck's dad's arm...for a second?</li> <li>So Jenny is slowly showing signs she could totally jump over S and B's heads and become an evil head honcho of the Upper East Side. Where did she get those guts from? Locking Chuck up outside? Nice.</li> <li>Speaking of Mr. Bass – I <i>adored</i> Chuck's devil mask and red suit... perfect!</li> <li>I'm surprisingly still enjoying the parents. Even though Rufus Humphrey is still no Sandy Cohen and needs to stop trying to be. I think it's the hair that makes me think he's trying to be Sandy...</li> <li>I grinned when Dan qualified his love for Vanessa as a "16-year-old" thing. So much older and wiser now that they are 17. Yes – 17. I know, I know... but back in the day Dawson never looked like a teenager right? So lets not dwell on this.</li> <li>I thought Nate was a little pathetic during his proclamation of love for Serena (or, as the case may be, Jenny, who he thought was Serena).
