Wedding Tourism Coming to English Churches?

The Anglican Church wants to make it easier for couples to get married in their church of choice.

Under the proposed rules, couples can marry anywhere they have lived for six months or where their parents or grandparents married. Currently, only regular church attendees or those who live within the parish can be married in the parish church.

Since the Anglican Church is England's official state church, the changes must be approved by Parliament and given Royal Assent. Church leaders favor the new rules, which they say reflect a modern and mobile society. Others fear "wedding tourism" - they think people committed to religious communities (with pretty churches) will have to compete with the nonfaithful out-of-towners.

Do you think the relaxed rules will bring more weddings, and thus more worshipers? Can couples celebrate the tradition of getting married in a church without faith? Should church weddings be reserved only for church goers?

Jade Goody Vows to Walk Down the Aisle in Church Wedding

Jade Goody is determined to have the strength to walk down the aisle in a church away from the hospital when she marries Jack Tweed on Sunday. It looked like Jade and Jack would have to marry in the chapel of the Royal Marsden Hospital where she has been treated for cancer, and that she may need a wheelchair, but Jade has said:

"I am going to die in this hospital, so I don’t want to get married here. But wherever we tie the knot, I’m determined to walk down that aisle. I’ve lost my balance and the doctors aren’t sure if it’s a sign that the cancer has spread to the brain or if it’s just weakness. But I’m hoping I will have the strength to walk on my big day. It would be so cruel to be robbed of that one last thing as well."

Jack proposed to Jade at her hospital bedside on Friday, after doctors gave her the heartbreaking news that she only has months to live. Then at the weekend, Jack took Jade out in her wheelchair to a spot beside the Thames so that he could get down on one knee and officially ask her to marry him. The couple exchanged matching rings by the riverside.

Jade pleaded with her doctors about her wedding day, saying: "I will be walking down the aisle on my wedding day. Please help me do that." She added: "I’m so looking forward to being a bride. And I want to walk toward my groom, just like any other young woman would on what is meant to be the best day of their lives."

Mohamed al Fayed has given Jade a £3,500 cream and ivory Uranio wedding dress from Manuel Mota's Pronovias 2009 collection as a gift from Harrods. Jade has asked the Living TV producer who has been involved with filming her illness to be her bridesmaid. She is being so brave, and she deserves a beautiful ceremony on Sunday.

Blake Fielder-Civil has filed for divorce from Amy Winehouse, on the grounds of Amy's adultery. Amy spoke to a Sunday paper from her holiday in St Lucia, saying, "I love it here and have never felt so happy. In fact, I don't think I'm ever going home. Especially as I met Josh here. Buzz-Worthy Video of the Day: The Office Lost Wedding Scene

Jim and Pam's wedding on The Office last week was a blessed comedy event - the couple managed to make me tear up, but the rest of the cast slayed me. In fact, if you were thinking that the episode could have gotten a boost from the shenanigans the rest of Dunder Mifflin pulled while waiting for Jim and Pam to return from their Niagara Falls cruise, then look no further: a deleted scene of the cast waiting in the church has surfaced, and it's predictably hilarious.

Desperate Housewives Rundown Season 6 Premiere "Nice Is Different Than Good"

The season six premiere of Desperate Housewives opens with Mike's much-anticipated wedding and then takes us on a series of flashbacks to the weeks leading up to the big event.

Susan - She's been avoiding Katherine since she and Mike got back together but is forced to see her when she stops by Bree's house. Hiding behind Lynette, she manages to avoid a confrontation until a delivery man leaves Susan's wedding dress at Katherine's house, leaving her no choice but to go over and pick it up. When Susan stops by, Katherine opens the door wearing the dress - and teases her by cooking red pasta sauce dangerously close to the dress. It's obvious that Katherine is upset about the wedding, but Susan is determined that it be her special day. Susan might have more than Katherine to worry about with Julie back in town being courted by Danny, the new housewife's son.

Bree - Still estranged from Orson and toying with an affair with her divorce lawyer Carl, Bree struggles with her adulterous feelings. When Orson begs her to rethink the divorce and consider counseling, she realizes that "guilt is a small price to pay for happiness" and books a hotel room for a rendezvous with Carl - in clean sheets, of course.

Gaby - Carlos's niece Mariana is living at the house and pushing Gaby's patience. Gaby sees right through Mariana's tricks and tries to keep her teenage ways under control by monitoring what she wears to school and implementing a 10 p.m. curfew. Gaby sees a lot of her teenage self in Mariana and doesn't want her to have to go through the same struggles that she did, so she signs papers to legalize her and Carlos's guardianship over Mariana.

Lynette - Three months pregnant with twins and realizing she'll be 60 years old when they graduate from high school, Lynette is stressed out about the idea of adding two more to the family. In the waiting room at the doctor's office, she scares a young new mom-to-be out of her elation with details about saggy boobs, constant breastfeeding, and absent husbands. Later, she and Tom are together for the first ultrasound, and when she doesn't show any excitement for the babies, Tom confronts her. She breaks down and says she doesn't love the babies liked she loved their other kids. Tom assures her that once she holds them she will, but she doesn't seem too convinced.

Katherine - Crazed from losing Mike, Katherine is a mix of depressed and resentful. She and Susan still haven't spoken since the breakup, and she intends to get a public apology from Susan - at her and Mike's wedding. Susan refuses and locks her in a closet before the ceremony, but she manages to get out and meet them in the aisle after the ceremony. Even after Susan gives in and apologizes in front of the entire church, it's pretty clear that Katherine won't be letting go of her heartbreak, or resentment for Susan, any time soon.

Angie - The mysterious new housewife on the block (spitfire Drea de Matteo) brings her husband Nick and son Danny to Fairview. We see that, obviously, they left some dark past behind when we get a glimpse of some pretty gnarly scars on Angie's back. But Angie won't be the only one stirring things up since Danny seems to have a sordid past too. After he and Julie go on a date and get in a fight and he goes missing after Mike and Susan's wedding, we are left to wonder who mysteriously strangled Julie and escaped the scene.

Mark and Rhea's Beautiful Beverly Hills Wedding

Mark Wahlberg and his new wife Rhea Durham stepped out of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in LA on Saturday with their daughter Ella by their side. The church was decorated with pink and purple roses for their intimate wedding ceremony in front of about a dozen guests. Rhea looked stunning in her Marchesa gown with Neil Lane diamonds while flower girl Ella matched her mom in white. The longtime couple's two other children Michael and Brendan also watched on as their parents tied the knot, declaring their vows in front of loved ones. Congratulations to the newlyweds and the whole family!

Church of England Reaches Out to Those "Living in Sin"

Accepting that modern couples may be turned off by traditionally rigid morals, the Church of England is making an effort to welcome families who have had children out of wedlock.

Today, the Church unveiled a new "hatch and match" service that offers a two-for-one wedding and baptism ceremony. Now couples can get married and have their children baptized all in one day!

But not everyone is happy by the Church's effort to stay relevant. Some argue that it condones having children before marriage, while another member of the faith said: "It's a shame that what should be a bride's day now stands to be hijacked by screaming kids."

The Church hopes the new offering will atone for the tradition of shunning unmarried mothers by welcoming them back into the Church without judgment. Now let's just see if the women (and their partners and children) will take the offer.

Saving Yourself but Rushing Into Marriage?

I have a high school friend who was raised in a church-going family and got married right out of college. In her late 20s, she admitted to me that while she and her husband have a great time together, most of her other friends are still single or living with their boyfriends. "I don't really know why we got married so young," she said.

What I wanted to say - but didn't - was "Because you wanted to have sex!" For some couples, saving themselves for marriage means getting married sooner rather than later. Not surprisingly, some evangelicals are encouraging couples to marry younger, but modern-day, abstinence-practicing lovebirds sometimes find it difficult to balance that with their peers' tendency to get married later in life. Think of it as a wholesome twist on the traditional shotgun wedding, with its own complications:

The call for young marriage raises questions: How young is too young? What if marriage is viewed as a ticket to guilt-free sex? What about the fact that marrying young is the No. 1 predictor of divorce?

A recent story in Christianity Today, titled "The Case For Young Marriage," acknowledges that it's unrealistic to expect couples to save themselves for marriage if marriage isn't happening until their late 20s or early 30s. But the article doesn't endorse premarital sex; it merely suggests that the abstinence message may be coming on too strong.

Megan and Jay Mkrtschjan also got married right out of college, and the groom says it had a lot to do with sex. But now the couple says getting married young may have helped them, since they worked out their early hardships while both were still maturing, rather than getting married older, when both were set in their ways.

Friday Feel-Good: Homeless Couple Marries After Nine Years

If you need your heart warmed before the weekend, get a load of this wedding story. A Washington DC couple, who started dating nine years ago while they were both living on the streets, just got married in a ceremony organized by the parishioners at Grace Episcopal Church.

Both White, 28, and his new bride, Nhiahni Chestnut, 39, attend Bible studies and a meal program at the church. When White mentioned to a fellow churchgoer how much he wished he could afford a wedding, everyone decided to pitch in.

"In good Grace church congregation fashion, everyone got behind the idea: one person managed flowers, I helped with the wedding rings, one woman made the cake, someone helped with the tux, and someone else with the bride's gown," [parishioner Margaret Davis] said.

Another churchgoer paid for a two-night honeymoon stay at the Key Bridge Marriott Hotel across the Potomac River in Virginia.

Until White went to pick out his suit, he had never even seen the inside of a shopping mall, and when the couple met, both were living on the streets. Chestnut said, "I was basically living from day to day, trying to survive, and I wound up meeting him."

Sadly, the couple remains unemployed and homeless, but their love story kinda puts things in perspective, doesn't it?
