Look of the Day: Nude But Not Naked

Sometimes nude dresses can be really hard to pull off - you have to find the right shade of nude to complement your skin tone rather than clash with it. That said, shini has a done a fabulous job of matching her skin tone with her nude but not naked look. The dress she wore to her end of the academic year party is very simple, but it flatters her. And I love the red clutch and heels she added to make the outfit pop! Beautiful!

Now that I think about it, I have countless cocktail dresses. What made me realize this was a flip through The Cocktail Dress by Laird Borrelli-Persson ($15). The senior features editor at Style.com, and fellow FIT grad, elucidates the importance of the not-so-simple item of clothing in a perfectly compact ode to. Filled with iconic images ranging from the runway to fine art to classic film stills (Miss Holly Golightly is the cover art) to designer sketches, the book makes it evident you can't mess with the cocktail dress. Insightful quotes are throughout; my favorite is from the film The Ex-Mrs. Bradford: "What is a cocktail dress? Something to spill cocktails on." Touché.

Love It or Hate It? BCBG Open Back Cocktail Dress

The retailer that sells this BCBG Open Back Cocktail Dress ($298) describes it as sexy, and that certainly isn't a lie. Observe - it has an open back, open sides, and a keyhole in the middle. The color is gorgeous and the draping lavish, but I would have liked it more if the sides were covered. Am I being too modest?

Fergie decked herself out for tonight's festivities. She opted for a studded Armani Privé dress with a super-high slit. Cool zipper detailing on the bodice! Black patent pumps, silver bangles, and a whopping cocktail ring add further kick to her look. Do you love this or hate it?

As we approach the holidays, I'm on the lookout for original party looks. Eva's wink may not be up to par, but the slick tuxedo-inspired look she wore to the 2010 Pirelli Calendar cocktail reception in London was beyond Fab. She dressed up her slight harem pants with delicate sandals, a draped white top, and a velvet blazer. Feminine details like a black lace peekaboo bra and radiant art deco earrings are suave touches.
