Quiz: More Than Just Bulldogs and Wildcats!

Rather than rely on season records or uniform colors, I made many of my March Madness picks based on whether or not the school had an animal as a mascot. While it may be an unconventional method, I decided to extend the popular "Who Let the Dogs Out?" quiz to this year's college basketball tourney. After pondering what a Tar Heel or Hoosier is (turns out neither are animals), I created a nice little quiz of wild mascots for you. For some I included the animal picture, others just the names - you don't even need to know basketball to play!

I filled out our office March Madness bracket and I'll clue you into my secret – since my alma mater performed miserably, I went for the animal mascots! Now I'm not sure how things will turn out for me in the end, but it was fun doing my research on the sporty creatures. Party Like A Mascot

The most I've seen a mascot do is wave, walk and bounce around in an uncoordinated, big-footed way. But this ain't your average mascot. March Madness ends this week (I know, it's April already) but the final men's college basketball game between North Carolina and Michigan State tips off later on today. I'm tipping you off on some b-ball themed posts we've had in the past so let this get you pumped, or clue you in, for the sport craze.

Come Party With Me: Tailgate - Invites

The biggest game of the year for the California Golden Bears is against their lifelong rival Stanford. Since I was a cheerleader for Cal, I plan on giving my all for "The Big Game." This year the game is at Stanford - aka The Farm - which means it's time for my biennial tailgate! I go all out with lots of blue and gold, and tons of food and drinks. The game is not until Saturday, December 1, but I want to get the invites out now. This way people have time to make travel arrangements, hotel accommodations, and purchase tickets. To make an invitation similar to the one seen here you will need the following supplies:

white cardstock
scissors
glue
mascot image
computer & printer

To assemble the invite:

Create a new Word document. Drag the mascot image into the document. Decorate accordingly with any phrases or cheers from your home team. Cal's mascot is the bear so I used an image of a ferocious and powerful bear. Since UC Berkeley was the first college in California, it has adopted the name California or Cal for short. I put a big California in blue and gold underneath the bear, but get creative! Print out a test copy and once satisfied, print out on the white cardstock.

Open another blank Word document. Write out the details of the gameday. Make sure the font is not centered, but to the left because you want the invite to be a functional postcard. I changed the font to dark blue and wrote, in Stone Sans ITC TT-Bold font,

Big Game time!
Come cheer on the Cal Golden Bears!

Saturday, December 1, 2007
Tailgate Starts @ Noon
Game Starts @ 4 pm

Tailgate field next to the Stadium

Blue, gold, and white attire required.
No RED allowed.

Print out a test copy and check for grammar and spelling mistakes. Once satisfied, print out on the white cardstock.

Cut the front of the postcard invite with the mascot image down to size.

Turn over and glue the text to the back. Cut this down to the same size as the front.

I added an axe to separate the text from the address on the back of the postcard. According to Big Game legend, the winner of the game takes home the axe. Cal won last year so we continue to be in possession of the axe! If your team has a tradition along these lines incorporate it into the invite!

With a sparkly pen and your best handwriting, write out the address of your guests. Stamp and send!

Do You Want to Smell Like Your College?

Not ready to leave your college days behind? Masik, a year-old fragrance company, is betting on it. Their small but growing line features scents inspired by various universities. To create the juice, the team considers things such as school colors, the mascot, campus flora, and the fight song. (Does that mean that the UC Santa Cruz fragrance would smell like a banana slug?) Right now, only UNC and Penn State have their own fragrances, but other schools are following. Would you want to smell like your school, or would you take a pass?
