Hair Color How-Tos: Keeping Reds Vibrant

Ah, red. It's such a feisty color. It can be a sassy, fiery shade of cherry, or a subtle, natural strawberry blonde. Whatever the case, one thing's for sure. While the smaller color molecules of red dye enter the hair rather easily, they also exit the hair quite rapidly.

The most surefire way to keep red staying vibrant is to wash your hair less often. But, there are more things you can do to keep your reds refreshing. Go pro: When it comes to red, there are so many variations and tones of color. Plus, box color isn't as strong as professional color, so it's best to leave it to the experts. That, or use professional color only like you'd find at Sally Beauty Supply.
Sun protection: Besides water, one of hair color's worst enemies is the sun. Protect from fading by covering your hair with a scarf, hat, or even sun protecting product like Aveda Color Conserve Sun Protector ($14).
Wait and wash: After coloring your hair, wait 24-48 hours to help lock it in further. Trust me. It works.
Cold water: Warm water opens up the cuticle. Cold water helps seal it. Help prevent red color from slipping out by washing it in cold water instead.
Safety first: It probably goes without saying that color-safe shampoo is a must for color-treated hair. For red hair, however, it's an absolute must. Try Redken Color Extend Shampoo ($13) and Redken Color Extend Conditioner ($15).
Glazed over: A glaze will keep your red looking shiny and fresh in between colorings. John Frieda's Luminous Color Glaze in Deeper, Richer Red ($8.50) might just do the trick.
Depositing shampoo: Once or twice a week, try a color depositing shampoo and conditioner to keep the vibrancy alive, like L'Oreal's ARTec Professionnel Color Depositing Shampoos ($17 each) and Conditioners ($19 each) in Cherry Bark, Orange Marigold, and Red Clover.
DIY: Use ingredients from nature to enhance your hair color. Apply a 50/50 mixture of carrot and beet juice on damp hair. Let it sit for an hour out in the sun.
Get real: Be realistic about red. If you are going from a light blond to an auburn, it may take a few trips to the salon to get the true, rich red pigment you desire.

Bella Book: The Hair Color Mix Book

How many times have you tried to color your hair at home, only to be "rewarded" with spotty highlights and a hue that's not quite right? (Or is that just me?) If you need a little help with your hair color, you might like The Hair Color Mix Book ($24.95), out next week.

Author Lorri Goddard-Clark is a salon veteran who has worked with celebrities including Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet, Heidi Klum, Madonna, Kirsten Dunst, and Drew Barrymore (who wrote the book's foreword). While it'll cost $150 and up to have her highlight your hair at Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills, the book shares her techniques and tricks for a lot less money.

This book isn't for women who want a quick, simple solution for hair coloring. Instead, it's for anyone who's willing to mix different colors and try various application techniques to get the perfect color. (Goddard-Clark admits that buying all of the necessary supplies can be a little costly, but over time, it will be less expensive to color your hair at home.)

The book is separated into three sections: techniques, recipes, and post-color care. You'll definitely need to read the first section thoroughly to understand Goddard-Clark's techniques; they're not difficult to follow, but it's important to understand how to mix different dyes to get the right look. One quibble: The instructions are clear, but I wish the book used photos instead of illustrations to demonstrate the proper application techniques. But in general, if you're committed to learning how to do more than apply all-over color to your hair, consider this your textbook.

Make sure you like and trust your colorist. He or she doesn't have to be the best stylist in town, but they do need to be the best person for you
Keep in mind that highlights have a smoother grow out period than all over color. They also look more natural, especially during the summer time when your hair tends to get naturally lighter from the sun
Always condition your hair. The better condition your hair is in to begin with, the longer your color will hold
You should aim to get your hair colored every 6-8 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. Keep in mind that colorists book up quickly so it's best to make your next appointment before leaving the salon so you don't end up in a jam - or three inch roots
Try to go as long as possible without washing your hair after getting it colored. Let the color settle and when you finally do have to breakdown and give it a good shampoo, rinse with cold water to close the cuticles of your hair
Whatever color you are, use matching color enhancing products - remember to buy both the shampoo and the conditioner - they only work when used together
Keep your color treated hair out of the sun if possible. Not only will it dry out your hair, but it will also wreak havoc on your color. Also, avoid chlorine at all costs. The chemicals can strip your color and even turn blonde hair green - no, it isn't a myth!

Hair that has been color treated always requires special attention. Well-conditioned hair is essential for vibrant color but that alone won’t keep your hair from fading. The best way to maintain color longer is by using a color-preserving shampoo/conditioner with water protection. Many people think UV rays are mainly responsible for fading hair color, but water is the real culprit. Water penetrates the hair shaft causing it to expand. As a result, the hair cuticle is lifted slightly, making it easier for dye molecules to escape. Water can also cause dye molecules to break into smaller pieces, making them even easier to escape the shaft. Love Whitney Port's Hair? Get Tips From Her Stylist

You might remember my interview with celebrity hair colorist Johnny Ramirez, who has styled the likes of Victoria Beckham, Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Pompeo, and Amber Valetta - just to name a few. Also among his celebrity clientele? Whitney Port, the cordial, soft-spoken, lanky blonde from MTV's The City.

Whitney will soon have an old friend in New York, as Ramirez, who works at the famed Chris McMillan Salon in LA, is about to go bi-coastal. The first week of each month, the talented colorist will also be waving his magic color wand at Serge Normant at John Frieda in Manhattan. Check out what he had to say about Whitney's hair color, along with tips on preventing hair color from fading when you read more.

If you like Whitney's hair, but a trip to NYC or LA is not in the cards for you, Ramirez has advice for achieving her multidimensional hues that you can take to your colorist. It's even recession-friendly, too.

To start: Whitney's hair color is light brown/dark blond near the top, and it fades into a light blond towards the end. To get the look, "grow out as much of your roots as you can," Ramirez advises. "I know it will be a little bit of a process, but focus on keeping it really soft and natural at the top. . . Have very minimal highlights at the top, and keep the ends light," he advised. "It's very low-maintenance."
Multidimension: When she first started The Hills, Ramirez says, Whitney's blond hair lacked depth, which washed her out. And now, "It's beautiful, healthy, and it looks natural," he says. "I saw baby pictures of her. It's exactly what she had when she was a kid."
Layer it up: Ramirez advises using a toner and gloss to keep the color from fading. "After about two to three weeks, the gloss starts fading away," he says. "Then, about two to three weeks after that, the toner starts fading away." By the time his clients come to see him again, their color still looks fresh. "It's time-consuming, but it really stays," he adds.
Refresh: "Stop by [your salon] in between hair visits for a gloss," he said. This keeps the color rich, and it's cheaper than a full color treatment.

Nine Easy Tips to Recession-Proof Your Hair

It probably comes as no surprise that colorists are seeing their clients with longer stretches of time between appointments. Could it have a direct correlation with the sagging economy? Um, yeah! Fortunately, colorist Debi Dumas of Jim Wayne Salon in Beverly Hills shared a few ways to make your professional hair color last longer - and save a few bucks along the way.

Dumas, who has worked with the likes of Ali Landry, Robin Wright Penn, and Mischa Barton, says these days it's chic to save money. Even in posh Beverly Hills, she says, "people are looking at ways to cut back." For her tips on giving your color a boost without breaking the bank, read more.

Time is money. The more time booked out for your stylist, the more you'll pay for his or her time and products used. "Honesty is the first key," Debi says. Let your stylist know what you are able to pay and how often you'll be able to come in for color services.
Color only areas that show. Unless your hair is short or you're pulling it back in a way that would reveal roots, there is no reason to color the inside back of your hair. If you're going from a darker color to a lighter color (brown to blond), think about a getting a root touch-up only around your part and around the hairline. This "secret" could save you upwards of 50 percent!
Go multitonal. If you are getting highlights with one shade, ask your colorist to put several tones in. "It grows out more gently," Debi says. Creating more dimension in the hair will allow you to stretch out your time in between salon visits.
Get washed. If your roots aren't showing, but your color is looking dull (especially for redheads), get a color wash. It takes only about 15 minutes and runs about half of the cost. Your color will be brighter and refreshed.
Deep condition. "Moisture penetrates into your hair," Debi says. "That helps keep color from slipping out." To elongate time in between services, wrap a warm damp towel around your hair and let the conditioner work its magic.
Don't go too wild. "Stick with a color closest to your natural hair," Debi says. It might seem obvious, but it works.
Wash hair less often. The more you shampoo, the more chance you are allowing artificial pigments to lift out. Avoid chlorine and cheap shampoos and conditioners, which are too detergent-like and harsh.
Buy more, get more. Invest in larger sizes of professional products. "You'll save a tremendous amount if you buy the bigger ones," Debi says. Plus, most of the products are stabilized and are manufactured to last.
Get boxed in. If you cannot afford salon products, think about purchasing over-the-counter products from the same company. L'Oreal, for instance, has its professional line plus a drugstore variety.
