Candidates Broke Late-Night Show Appearance Records

The Presidential candidates worked the late-night talk show circuit during the 2008 campaign, making more than four times the number of appearances with Letterman, Jay Leno, Jon Stewart, and the likes than the 2004 lineup did, according to new research.

Candidates showed off their face-to-face skills with 110 appearances on late-night comedy shows, a sharp shoot up from 25 in 2004, according to the Center for Media and Public Affairs. Fifty of those spots occurred before the primary votes were even cast, offering the chance for candidates to show their comedic chops and create ideal YouTube or cable news sound bites. And, as a former Hillary Clinton adviser said, "It's a lot more risky, as Sarah Palin will attest, to do an interview with Katie Couric than it is with Jay Leno".

John McCain made 17 guest appearances and created quite a hullabaloo when he canceled on Letterman. President-elect Barack Obama clocked 15 appearances, third behind Republican Mike Huckabee, who now has his own show on Fox News Channel and was promoting his book. Republicans on the Receiving End of Late-Night Jokes 7-1

If you're staying up to watch John McCain make his grand, and potentially awkward, return to David Letterman tonight, you should expect to hear seven jokes about McCain's party for each joke made about the Democrats.

According to the Center For Media and Public Affairs, since McCain tapped Sarah Palin, 286 jokes have been made about the Republicans by late-night comics compared to 42 about the Democrats. Even material-producing Joe Biden, set to appear on Leno tonight, doesn't find himself the butt of many jokes. I guess the availability of a Sarah Palin comedian look-alike got Joe off the hook.

Perhaps Republicans should take it as a compliment - maybe they're just funnier than Democrats! Do you think late-night skewering could help kick politicians out of power?

Pop Reports: Chris Rock at The Hammersmith Apollo

On Saturday night, I was lucky enough to score a pair of tickets to Chris Rock at The Hammersmith Apollo. Since the show was being taped live for HBO, Chris exuded more spirit on stage than ever before.

The Emmy-winning comedian, screenwriter, actor, producer and director gave a seamless performance that lasted well over an hour and didn't even let a hiccup like an audio power outage (that occurred just before he went onstage) affect him in the slightest.

He opened with a bit about the upcoming election in America and tirelessly joked about each of the Presidential candidates. This was followed by soliloquy (and ladies listen up) on what your guy is really thinking when he's in bed with you. In less lewd and crude topics, he delivered a flawless, side-splitting segment dedicated to the difference between a career and a job.

As always, Rock uses his own experiences throughout the show to keep things light and personal; a well played move that makes you like you're really getting to know him and, instead of laughing at him, you feel like you're chuckling hard with a friend.

If you're someone who's not easily offended by the incessant use of the "f" word or "n" word and if you don't mind gags about homosexuality, race, gender, sex, relationships, money and politics, then Chris will rock your world - two thumbs up!

An Old Film Gets a New Script

Whose Line Is It Anyway? is supposed to feature improvisational comedy, but I have a hard time believing that the following is unscripted. The comedic timing is just too flawless. But if my naysaying is off the mark and this act is truly off-the-cuff then these dudes are brilliant. See for yourself.

Watch Out or You'll Become a Girl Drink Drunk

Last week TeamSugar member WhiplashGirlchild wrote a post about one of my favorite sketch comedy troupes, The Kids in the Hall. I used to be a huge fan, but haven't actually seen any of their sketches in some time - which is why I was thrilled to see some of the sketches she included in her post.

The first one that Whiplash shared with us was their sketch called "Girl Drink Drunk." It's a sad story of a man who doesn't drink, but falls in love with "Girl Drinks" - you know, big froo-froo things with umbrellas and pink sugar - and then heads down an awful spiral of being drunk on the job. While drinking on the job is normally not a laughing matter, it's really hard to take it seriously when someone is popping into the storage closet to blend margaritas. Comedic Gymnastics? Hells Yeah!

Paul Hunt, a renown gymnast and women's coach, never took himself or his sport too seriously. He blended comedy with skill and his ever-present alter ego, Señora Pauletta, became a fan fave. Here she is, pretty in pink and pigtailed to boot, tackling the uneven bars. Her form is a little off, but she's flipping funny for the win. Wait for the landing - it's comedy gold! This "public improvement film" is a sketch from a comedy show, so we can't take it too seriously. Although it's mocking men's attitudes from the past, some dudes still have the same attitude now. To them I say: Watch your back when crossing the street, as my "pretty little mind" might not think to hit the brakes fast enough. Oopsy-daisy!

John Mayer Takes A Stab At Comedy

And by "takes a stab," I mean he kills it. John Mayer is to comedy as Jessica Simpson is to acting-- that is, a disaster. I advise they both keep to singing. (But I'll admit, he does crack a funny Carrie Underwood joke. Let's just hope he has darn good car insurance!)
