Last Wednesday, when I was making the food for an Apples to Apples theme party, I couldn't help but ask myself, "Whose stupid idea was it to plan an entire menu of apple dishes?" The idea was mine, of course. It was a great idea in theory, but I didn't realize that I would have to peel, slice, core, and chop 18 apples.

Have you ever noticed how sticky garlic is? When you're peeling it, it sticks to your fingers, and when mincing, it sticks to the cutting board and knife. For years I've been annoyed by it, but recently I discovered an easy way to reduce garlic's stickiness.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the cuisine of Costa Rica, one of my favorite parts of the trip was cooking! The condo that we stayed in had an amazing kitchen, and since cooking has always relaxed me, I made dinner practically every night. And breakfast every morning.

After the rise of the celebrity chef, men fell into society's cooking line by taking up the hobby like it's snowboarding. Now a magazine for men, called Beef, has launched in Germany, solidifying cooking's place as a socially acceptable masculine hobby. We could thank Top Chef or the manly meat trend (brining, smoking, foraging), and that would probably be accurate.

When chef Cal Stamenov showed us how to make the perfect scallop at Chefs' Holidays, I learned a lot about different types of mollusks and the key to preparing them. But the best part of the demo was chef Cal's answer to a long-standing burning question of mine. Why is it that recipes often call for both olive oil and butter?
