Denim, khaki, linen, twill - no matter the fabric, crop those pants. Long bottoms have their place, but short ones feel especially modern at the moment. To achieve the look, you can either cuff your long pants, cut them, or buy them 'ready cropped.

You and a bevy of your closest guy and gal pals are gathering on the beach Friday evening for a little ring-in-the-weekend bonfire - think The Hills! It gets a little chilly with the sea breeze in the evening, so I reminded you to make sure to bring a jacket, and some sand-friendly shoes.

Trend Alert: Cropped Jeans

What to wear when you don't want to wear full-on long jeans but it's too chilly to wear a skirt? I am a longtime fan of cropped jeans, they are fabulous for several reasons:

They have a retro-flair
They show off your shoes!
They are casual chic and go with a plethora of tops
They are sassy!

If that's not enough reason for you to attempt to wear these functional cuties I give up! Oh, and for those who are going to claim they are too short to wear cropped jeans - use SJP as your guide and just throw on a hot pair of heels (Roger Vivier or not!).

Back to Cool: Saved by the Bell

Hands down, Saved by the Bell was my favorite after-school show. High school couldn't look cooler with Kelly Kapowski, Lisa Turtle, and Jessie Spano. Of course, hotties Zach Morris (remember the huge cellphone he used to carry in his pocket?) and beefcake A.C. Slater provided hunky eye candy. And Screech, who could forget Screech? Loved him. I was only in grade school when this show debuted, so I could only dream of wearing Kelly's crop tops and Lisa's tight denim shorts - Jessie had legs for days in those washed out skinny jeans. The girls also fancied jean jackets, high-waist pants, and floral prints. Sigh, what I would do for a Freaky Friday experience with Kelly Kapowski circa '91 . . .

The Look For Less: DKNY Embellished Trim Wool Jacket

There's something intriguing about a black jacket that has a hint of shine, like this DKNY Embellished Trim Wool Jacket ($504). This Forever 21 Jewel Trim Tweed Jacket ($35) has the class and the sass, but not the high price tag. The square-shaped jewels are a bit bigger than the DKNY version, but they provide the perfect sparkle. The cropped sleeves are also fresh. Since the silhouette is on the classier side, I would make it cooler with a pair of lightwash jeans.

It's tempting to wear the usual jeans, leggings, or tights during cold months, but I double dare you to try something new. Just look to Rachel Bilson for inspiration. Instead of donning the expected denim and top combo, the cutie paired a crisp white shirt with a pair of sharp trousers.
