A Look at the Accessories of Chanel Paris-Londres Métiers d’Art Collection

Yesterday Karl Lagerfeld presented his “Métiers d’Art” collection in London. This collection is shown outside of the official fashion calendar and is unique to Chanel. It was established in 2002 following the acquisition of the master Parisian ateliers who have been collaborating with the house for decades. It's a celebration of the exceptional decorative craft of these ateliers.

I spent the sunsetting part of my day examining close-ups of the accessories. Since the collection is a tribute to the decorative craft, I wanted to use my discriminating eye. The collection tickled my fascination with vampires - moody, tailored, heavily embellished looks. Seeing as how the inspiration was the "English chic" that Coco Chanel herself was introduced to by her British lovers, Boy Capel and the Duke of Westminster, this makes perfect sense.

From jeweled crosses to sparkling chain bags, these could outfit a fashionable remake of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I especially love the silver-tipped shoe and gold metal lace gloves. The placement of jewels in the hair and on garments is an inspiring technique. In all their goth splendor, these accessories are indeed a modern tribute to the decorative.

Trend Alert: Vampires Beware!

Not too long ago, Ashley Olsen was channeling Buffy with a bold cross necklace. Religious beliefs aside, crosses have a way of looking cool, in that gothic, badass sort of way. I am still on the prowl for a Fabworthy gothic cross, maybe this Fall I will score the perfect one. The chosen one to ward off all evil.

Cross Shaped MP3 Player Fits Across Your Heart

The Cross MP3 player first caught my eye because of its shape, but I was even more intrigued when I noticed the player, which combines an element of geekery and jewelry, is only $36.

I learned from 2dayBlog that it features a built-in loudspeaker, has phone-book, electronic files, FM radio, voice recording and supports MP3 and WAV files. No word whether it was created to represent a geometrical figure or the four cardinal points, but if it is supposed to be a religious player I think it definitely beat out the iBelieve shuffle player.

Fit For March: Must Haves

Strollin': Silver Cross Pop

Having reviewed quite a few strollers last month, there were still quite a few on my list that I have been wanting to check out before making any final purchases. Silver Cross is a high end brand that has long been known for their swank prams like those that Nicole Richie and Jennifer Lopez chose for their tots. Realizing that many more moms see the practicality of a simple stroller, the British company is now selling their own line of simple pushchairs.

Still fairly new to the US market, Silver Cross manufactures three lightweight buggies for young tots: the Pop, Micro and Dazzle. All three of the strollers remind me quite a bit of different Maclarens.

The Silver Cross Pop ($150) is probably most similar to the Maclaren Quest in design and capabilities. The padded seat reclines slightly allowing tots to take a relaxing rest though it does not ease back all the way for newborn usage. The leg rest gives youngsters a padded place to rest their legs while they stay safely strapped into a five-point-harness belt that unfortunately is not too easy to snap and unlatch. Perhaps with a little extra practice, mommy's hands may become more agile at such maneuvering, but I found it a tad too difficult for my liking.

On the plus side, the ride is pretty smooth for a stroller with plastic wheels and for moms who prefer to walk the line, the wheels can be locked. Additional benefits are the folding mechanism, size, and weight. A quick trip to the store would be a cinch in the Pop as it only weighs 15 pounds and has a convenient shoulder strap attached to the back for slinging over a toting shoulder. Almost identical to a Maclaren's collapse, the Pop breaks down with a quick foot push on a lever and an upward lift of the middle bar in the back.

The basket underneath the seat provides enough room for a jug of milk and a shopping bag while the ergonomic inward facing handle bars provide mommy an extra set of hands from which she can hang a diaper bag or other necessary items.

I have to admit that I find the Maclaren a tad easier. Still the new kid on the block, the Silver Cross has room and time to improve and I'm sure it will. After all, I'm sure Silver Cross customer Marcia Cross is a fan of the brand for more than the name.

Animal Crossing City Folk For the Wii: New Features, Still Cute

I'm obviously a big fan of Animal Crossing - having spent hours on end playing Wild World on my DS - I'm happy to say I've already put in some good time with Animal Crossing: City Folk, since its release on Sunday. It's the same game you know and love from before (which could be a good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it), but thankfully there are a few awesome new features on the Wii version that you won't find on any of the other consoles.

One of which is the Wii Speak adapter ($30) that lets you chat with others from around the world via your WiFi connection. Just attach the USB speaker into the Wii and you're off. But the coolest thing about this version has to be the DS import feature. Instead of making a brand new character in City Folk, you can transfer your town from your DS and start where you last left off. I'm totally stoked about that since I've upgraded my house quite a bit. Plus, working for Tom Nook to pay off my mortgage wasn't easy - who wants to start that all over again from scratch?

Animal Crossing City Folk is now available online ($50) or in stores. But here's a tip: pick the game and microphone bundle from Amazon for $70 - you'll save ten bucks!

Gear Review: New Balance WX710 Cross-Trainer Shoes

When it comes to working out, I like to be outside. For outdoor runs I wear my Lunar Glides, and when I'm trekking in the mountains I stick to my Nike Wildedge approach shoes. Unfortunately, getting an outdoor workout isn't always in the cards, in which case, I hit the gym near my office. Since I don't like lugging around a lot of stuff and I'm pretty non-committal about what piece of gym equipment I use, I wanted a light and versatile pair of gym sneakers. It also made sense that they shouldn't be too pricey since they weren't going to be my primary kicks. So when New Balance sent me a pair of its WX710 cross-trainers ($60), I was stoked to try them out.

These shoes are light, way light. At 7.6 ounces per shoe, they weigh less than any sneaker I've owned and I barely even feel them in my bag. Apparently, the cushions of the shoes are made with a patented foam that's 12 percent lighter than other foams on the market. Weight seems like a small point to make, but when you're lugging around workout clothes, a laptop, and stuff from the office, every ounce you can shave off counts. And with all the caps on baggage allowances these days, I'm definitely making these sneakers my go-to fitness shoes for traveling.

I'm not going to lie, these are not the cutest looking shoes. I've never been a fan of white sneakers and these have that sort of generic '90s gym shoe look that I hate. But I'm not at the gym to look good so I got over how bright they were pretty quickly. They fit well and provide support in all the right places without feeling too cushiony or soft, which is a plus. I definitely am the type of person who likes to still feel my foot working inside of my shoes. Also, the lightness of the shoe really came into play while working out on the stationary bike because I didn't have a heavy foot weighing down the pedals. They have good traction too - there was one day in particular that I rode the bike without pedal buckles and my feet didn't slip off once. On top of that, the mesh is pretty breathable so my feet stayed nice and cool during my workouts.

While I wouldn't recommend these shoes for running - I think your feet will feel too vulnerable in them - they make a good all-around gym, strength training, or walking shoe. If white is not your thing, don't worry, they come in silver and black too.

How to Start: Cross-Country Skiing

I've had fun downhill skiing, but lately, I'm not in the mood to go zooming down crowded slopes. If moving at a moderate pace sounds more appealing to you as well, then you've got to try cross-country skiing this Winter. Even though you're not moving as fast, you're using your muscles more so you'll end up toning your upper and lower body, getting a great workout for your cardiovascular system, and you'll also end up burning almost 500 calories in one hour! I also like that you can slush along snow-covered trails with a friend and are able to have a conversation while taking in the breathtaking scenery - that's much harder to do when downhill skiing. Plus you don't have to pay for an expensive lift ticket and the boots you wear are flexible, and the skis are lightweight, so you might find it more comfortable than regular skiing. Here are some tips for getting started.

Find a place near you that has cross-country trails. Some downhill-ski resorts have them, but you can also check out nature centers or parks where you hike in the Summer. You may have to pay a fee (around $15 for half a day) to use the grounds. These places are great for beginners since the staff can point out the easier trails.
Rent boots, skis, and poles at the place where you're skiing, but if they don't rent out equipment, rent it the morning before from a gear store. Rentals are about $15 a day.
Definitely go with someone who has cross-country skied before. If you don't know anyone experienced, take a lesson so you can learn the basic techniques for moving, slowing down, stopping, and how to get up hills.

Make sure you dress appropriately. You don't want to wear too many layers since cross-country skiing is a lot like snowshoeing or running in the Winter. Once you get moving, you'll warm up and you don't want to get too sweaty. Slip on warm wool socks, base-layer pants, and a long-sleeve shirt. Then put waterproof pants, a fleece pullover, and a softshell or lightweight jacket over that. Wear a hat and mittens and you should be good to go.
I like to wear a small lumbar pack, so I can bring along some water, a snack, some lightweight gloves, a camera, and my cell phone.
Go at your own pace. It takes a little while to figure out the rhythm of how to move your arms and legs, so start off slow. Choose a short trail that will only take about an hour, and the next time you go you can increase the distance.
Try to go on a day after it's just snowed. Fluffy snow is much easier to ski on compared to an icy trail.
