Get the Look: Folksy Red Cushion Room

After reading my Decorating With Cozy Fall Throws slideshow, one reader wrote in saying, "I am in love with this room and want to know where everything is from, particularly the pillows and the artwork." You know me, I love to help you all "get the look," so here we go!

The success of this room is driven by the mix of pink and red textiles, including cushions, a throw, and a floormat. Those particular cushions are from Designers Guild but are no longer available. The artwork is from Pimpernel & Partners in London, but you can easily find similar artwork by searching "vintage floral paintings" on Etsy or eBay. Joanna Notkin, founder and head designer of LoooLo Textiles, has recently brought her sustainable textiles to the shelves of Design Public. She's been recognized as an important up-and-coming designer in the sustainable design field, and her debut collection, presented at the 2004 Interior Design Show in Toronto, won the ‘best collection’ award from New York-based Metropolis magazine. LoooLo sources the best organic fibers, dyes with the least environmental footprint, and manufacturers who respect the philosophy behind the products. Her collection of cushions and blankets is also beautiful, romantic, and parfait for Hibernation month.

I'm always looking for cute, versatile seating that can accommodate unexpected guests. The Modern Floor Cushion ($60) from Etsy seller Mookah is the perfect plus one at your next soiree. Handmade with a heavy-duty upholstery fabric, this floor cushion is composed of eight side panels with a matching top and bottom octagonal-shaped panel. It's two feet wide and 10 1/2 inches thick, so it can be easily tucked away when not needed. But why hide this cute little cushion away? I wouldn't stop at one; I'd grab three and stack them in a corner. After all, it's best to be prepared.

London-based luxury fabric and wall-covering company Designers Guild is hands down one of my favorite retailers of home décor of all time. If you're in the market for indulgent, feminine, colorful, and sophisticated textiles, DG is the answer. I'm always particularly won over by the retailer's stunning collection of throw pillows ("cushions"), made from luxurious cut velvets and sumptuous silks, with delicate and unique embroideries. The latest cushion additions feature modern stripes, exotic florals, and updated paisleys in a perfect, macaron-esque palette. I'd love to own them all, but here are a few of my favorites, from top left: Whitewell Celadon ($140), Delancey Lime ($100), Bourton Peony ($140), Margot Rose ($250), Bourton Celadon ($140), and Madison Peony ($100). Gym Equipment Explained: Balance Cushion

Most gyms have these odd looking inflatable discs, but what the heck do you do with it?

Inflatable Balance Disc/Cushion
What is it: A small inflatable cushion/disc that adds an element of instability to a workout. The cushion is typically textured on one side to control tread and minimize tipping. You can easily control the balance challenge by adjusting the inflation (less inflated it is, the harder).
Area of Body it Works: Core and more (depends entirely on how you use it)
Why: The instability, maximizes effort during functional training-- Good for a strong core and lower back.
How: There are many ways you can use the disc but here are some easy ideas --

Place a cushion under your foot/feet when doing squats and lunges.
Place two under your feet when doing sit-ups on an exercise ball.
Place one under your low back when doing crunches on the floor.
Place two under your hands (or one under your feet) during push-ups.
Place one disc under your feet while doing calf raises to strengthen ankles, calves and thighs.
Place one under your hands or feet during a plank.
Place one under your booty while sitting on an average chair to increase the strength of your lower abdomen and back muscles, reducing your risk of back injury from sitting all day.

I've never really been that into laptop cushions, mostly because they remind me of those padded desks I used as a kid on road trips.

They've just never seemed that comfortable - until I spotted the Brada laptop cushion on a trip to Ikea this weekend.

Its comfy half-moon shape would be ergonomic, and easier to use when you just want to sink into your couch - or, as per their staging suggestion, while chillaxin' in bed. The price for this coziness: $18.

Where Do You Stand? "Cushion Dating"

Before you're "boyfriend and girlfriend," it's perfectly acceptable to date other people. But even if you really like someone, it's not uncommon to go through the motions with someone else who you don't fancy all that much - you know, just in case! I like to call that backup plan a "cushion date." While I understand the urge to avert loneliness, some would say dating someone you're clearly not interested in is wrong, so ladies, where do you stand on this subject? Do you think it's OK to "cushion date"?
