What to Download: New Music Today

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores. So I take a spin through each week's music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download.

Something unique: The Dead Weather is another of Jack White's projects, and man does this band rock with a dark, sexy style that's completely their own. I like this description I found in a review of the album, Horehound: "All the members' earlier bands, save the Raconteurs, traffic in sex, threat and kink. But none has done so with the devilish abandon these guys achieve together." Right on. There's some rough-sounding rock ("Treat Me Like Your Mother"), some sultry stuff that reminds me of the '70s ("60 Feet Tall"), and plenty of dramatic sensuality ("Rocking Horse"). But the sounds on this album can't be categorized too neatly. It's just a great mishmash of something totally new.

No surprise, indeed - On Daughtry's latest album, Leave This Town, he has a song titled "No Surprise," which perhaps could be the anthem for the whole album. All the songs sound similar and pretty generic, but at the same time, Daughtry's passionate vocals keep you listening somehow. I like the guitars in the very sing-along-able "What I Meant to Say," and the more tender track "Tennessee Line" provides a bit of sweet relief in the lineup.

That's a lot of Summer: This soundtrack comes out today and it's such a good mix, I'm writing a full review. Stay tuned!

Very Few Fashion Whammys With the Men at the Grammys

The guys went mostly classy at last night's Grammy awards with a few exceptions - I'm looking at your leather suit, Daughtry. Perennially well-dressed John Legend and Jay-Z were highlights as always and Seal isn't afraid to take a risk. This time that risk included tight white pants and Velcro shoes. Chris Brown kept it appropriately youthful with his suit, though he didn't make his red and white look totally patriotic by walking the red carpet with his rumored flame Rihanna in blue. Meanwhile, Snoop Dogg was so stern, what happened to his usual smile? So what about you, any favorite boys on the red carpet? Sugar Bits - Daughtry Has Top-Selling Album of 2007

Billboard has released its list of the top-selling albums of the year, with Daughtry coming in at number one, followed by Akon, Fergie, the Hannah Montana soundtrack, and Carrie Underwood. Quite a year for American Idol alums! - Billboard
Nicole Kidman has won damages from a London newspaper that falsely reported her to be in breach of her Chanel contract after being spotted with a rival brand's perfume. At least Nicole's got one bright spot in a week of bad news. - AP
In a post on her blog, Pamela Anderson denied reports that she and her husband Rick Salomon are in talks to star in their own reality show. Thank goodness - the last thing we need is another couple reality show. - PamelaAnderson.com
Despite having plans to throw a massive party over the holidays, Amy Winehouse has apparently resolved to get her life together in the new year, starting with a one-week trip to rehab in Israel. Hopefully this really will be a new year of new beginnings, so in 2008 her trainwreck personal life can be as successful as her career. - The Sun

Announcing the 2007 American Music Awards Winners!

Former American Idol contestants and Justin Timberlake ruled the night at the American Music Awards on Sunday. Chris Daughtry's band, Daughtry, and Carrie Underwood each took home three awards - Daughtry for pop/rock album, adult contemporary artist, and breakthrough artist, Underwood for country album, female country artist, and the T-Mobile text-in award. Timberlake, who accepted his awards via video from Australia, won for male pop/rock artist and soul/r&b album.

Beyonce received a special award, the international artist award, which has been given to only a handful of artists including Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith.

It's So Not Over for Chris Daughtry

Losing American Idol hasn't hurt Chris Daughtry any. This weekend he sang the National Anthem at the NFC Championship Game in Chicago. His self-titled debut album reached #2 on the Billboard Top 200 in December and is still at #4 in its 8th week, right behind Justin Timberlake! As if that wasn't enough, Daughtry's It's Not Over is VH1's #1 video this week on the V Spot!

JT Isn't Sure He Wants Kids But Helps Keep Them Alive

Justin Timberlake took the stage with Alicia Keys last night at the Keep a Child Alive party in NYC. JT revealed he's "not sure" if he wants children of his own but did talk about moving to Manhattan soon. He said, "It's the greatest city in the world! It's good for everything. It's good for food, there's some good fashion, there's mostly good weather except for today and it's the realest city in America." Meanwhile, current Manhattanite John Mayer gushed about how well Jen knows him before joining her for a late dinner. Chris Daughtry also performed for the glammed up Jessica Alba and the rest of the star-studded crowd as everyone came out to support the children's charity.

Billboard Awards Preview: Chris Daughtry

Chris Daughtry is still going strong with his debut album, Daughtry, which is rocking the Billboard charts in the No. 2 spot. Needless to say, we were thrilled to sit down with him before the FOX Billboard Music Awards, which air tonight live from Vegas.

Chris was laid-back and charming, nursing his Monday morning coffee and telling us about his stay in Vegas in his soft Southern drawl. Tonight he'll be presenting the award for Male Country Artist of the Year; he's rooting for Tim McGraw because he wants to hand him the award. He was also excited to see Boyz II Men, saying they were an early influence on him before he discovered rock.

Of his rock-oriented debut, Chris told us: "I didn't want to be a solo artist. I didn't want to have the typical album coming out of American Idol." For his band name, he simply went with his last name, a la Bon Jovi. Early next year, he'll be kicking off a national tour in support of the album, but until then, he just wants to be home for the holidays and spend some quiet nights at home playing Scattergories. Sounds great to us - check Chris out tonight on FOX at 8/7c!

Chris Daughtry For Free!

Chris stopped by TRL this week to plug his new album which has already sold over a million copies and hit #1 this week with his first single, "It's Not Over." He's obviously super psyched and while he may not have won AI, he is still all about giving back to his fans. The AI finalist is slated to perform a free concert in downtown Greensboro, NC on March 23rd with his band Daughtry. He'll be performing as a prelude to the NCAA Women's basketball tournament for over 6,000 people. We bet people will be lined up for this show.
